Flashback: WDW 25th Anniversary

As we count down the days this week to the next Destination D event, this time honoring the 40th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort, I thought it would be fun to look back on anniversary celebrations over the past 40 years.

Aside from Disneyland's 10th anniversary in 1965, the large-scale celebration of Disney Parks anniversaries was most in vogue during the 1980s and 90s. Today, Disney acknowledges each anniversary with smaller events and collectible merchandise, saving the big blowouts for significant milestones (such as Disneyland's 50th in 2005). The last major celebration at Walt Disney World kicked off in October 1996 for the 25th anniversary. (All photos ©Disney)

The 25 Years of Magic celebration was marked by the debut of the Cinderella Castle Cake, a remarkable transformation of the Magic Kingdom park icon into an enormous, candy-colored confection. The castle cake continues to be as controversial today as it was then. I, for one, actually liked it. To see it in person was an unbelievable experience. While it made me smile every time, I also understood why others didn't care for it. It was perhaps too dramatic a departure from the classic castle image, and for those visiting Walt Disney World on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, it just wasn't what they expected to see.

What guests that year did enjoy, however, was the new Remember the Magic parade. Featuring a gospel-inspired theme, the parade introduced a new concept to the park, show stops. For the first time in Magic Kingdom history, the parade came to a stop at points on the route, and guests were invited into the street to take part in the celebration.

The 25th anniversary was also treated as a reunion of sorts. Every guest who had ever visited the Magic Kingdom was invited to return for the celebration. At the 25th Anniversary Welcome Center on Main Street (in the current home of Town Square Theater), guests could check in and receive a special badge identifying the year of their first visit. Mine proudly proclaimed: 1978! New to Walt Disney World? You got a First Visit badge, the precursor to the celebration buttons common today.

The Welcome Center included a sneak preview of Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, set to open at the conclusion of the 18-month-long anniversary celebration. At the time, 25 Years of Magic was the longest and most successful campaign the Walt Disney World Resort had ever seen.

For those of you who will be celebrating Walt Disney World's 40th at Destination D this weekend, be sure to look for me. I'll be at several of the presentations during the day and at times volunteering in the merchandise area of the Contemporary Resort Convention Center, so come say, "Hello!" I look forward to meeting you!

If you would like to attend Destination D: Walt Disney World 40th, tickets are still available at this link.

Californy or Bust!

Eureka! It's not only the official motto of the state of California, inspired by the exclamations of Gold Rush pioneers, but also an expression of the excitement this week as the date finally approaches for the inaugural D23 Expo. Many Disney fans (including yours truly) are heading out to the Golden State in anticipation of the big event. For those of you who can't make it, you'll be able to follow my adventures on Twitter or get news of the Expo on any number of independent web sites.

In the meantime here on the DisneyShawn blog, we'll be taking a look at some of the details of Disney's California Adventure, including some which are already gone or on the way out with the ongoing redevelopment of the park.

Entering Disney's California Adventure is like stepping into a giant, three-dimensional picture postcard. The enormous golden letters, spelling out the name of the state, are framed by two beautiful tile murals. Straight back through the center is the Golden Gate Bridge, with a glistening sun peeking over the horizon. Even the pavement here is highlighted with bits of inlaid glass set in a wave-like pattern, suggesting that a wave has just washed over the entrance and receded back into the park inviting us to follow.

The murals, designed and crafted by artists Tim Delaney and Theodora Kurkchiev, cover more than 10,000 square feet and include some of the largest ceramic tile pieces ever created. The east mural (left side above) represents Southern California from Mount Whitney and Yosemite Valley down to San Diego. The west mural (right side) depicts Northern California landmarks from San Francisco north to Mount Shasta.

The art on the murals was inspired by the citrus labels used by fruit packing houses in the early 20th century. The labels featured California landscapes, animals, flowers, fruit and people, indirectly serving as advertisements for the state and its promise of good weather, beautiful sights and abundant opportunity.

Passing through the Golden Gateway brings us to Sunshine Plaza, the central hub of Disney's California Adventure. The 50-foot gold titanium Sun icon is coated with a surface of glass and tile bits to create a glistening effect. Since the Sun faces north, six heliostats in the plaza track the real sun throughout the day, bouncing its light toward the icon. At night, the sun is lit in a pattern of changing colors of red, orange and yellow.

The sun sits atop a 52-foot-wide perpetual wave fountain that creates a series of ever-changing, mesmerizing wave patterns. Directly in front of that stands the dedication plaque from the park's grand opening:

To all who believe in the power of dreams... Welcome! Disney's California Adventure opens its golden gates to you. Here we pay tribute to the dreamers of the past... the native people, explorers, immigrants, aviators, entrepreneurs and entertainers who built the Golden State. And we salute a new generation of dreamers who are creating the wonders of tomorrow... from the silver screen to the computer screen... from the fertile farmlands to the far reaches of space. Disney's California Adventure celebrates the richness and diversity of California... its land, its people, its spirit and above all, the dreams that it continues to inspire.

More on D23

From Disney's official press release:

On March 10, 2009, Disney announced the launch of D23, the first official community for Disney fans in the Company's 85-year history. Through D23, fans will go backstage, behind closed doors and get the inside scoop from every part of the Company, while experiencing the nostalgia, adventure and fantasy of Disney as never before.

"At Disney, we have a fantastic legacy that started in 1923 and is based on timeless stories, beloved characters and unforgettable experiences, but it's our fans who keep the spirit of Disney alive year after year, generation after generation," said Disney President and CEO Bob Iger. "D23 is our way of saying 'thank you' and celebrating our fans, who bring the magic of Disney to life every day in every corner of the world."

The name D23 pays homage to the wonder and excitement that began in 1923 when Walt Disney opened his fledgling studio in Hollywood. Through the years, Disney has captured the imagination of millions around the world and, as requested by Disney fans everywhere, D23 gives them a greater, richer connection to the entire world of Disney by placing them in the middle of the magic.
