Here's something you don't see every day. An unpublished painting by Russell Patterson!
I had never seen or heard about this piece before. But thanks to the owner, Claude Elenewich, I'm happy to show it here on the blog. Thanks, Claude!

Patterson Weekly - 1
Beginning now and for almost a year I'll post photos of the covers Russell Patterson made for weekly newspaper supplements. All from my own collection.
Ranging from 1929 to 1942 it's not even close to a complete run, but still... Scanning and restoring these huge sheets will unfortunately take too long time, but I want to give people a chance to see these fairly rare pages. And I figure that these photos is better than nothing. Right?
Updates will, hopefully, be weekly. I hope you enjoy.

Russell Patterson 1933
Russell Patterson making a departure from his usual habit of drawing skinny girls. Enjoy!
All of the above images are taken from Ballyhoo magazine, June 1933.

Patterson pages
Got a collection of the cover stories that Russell Patterson illustrated back in the 20's, 30's and 40's stored away in a box. Added a couple of pages to the collection last week and took snapshots of a few. Thought some of you might enjoy seeing them. :)
The main reason for posting the above images is this: In case someone ever wants to make a book of the weekly Patterson pages and finds this post, just let me know and I'll be happy to help you!
Since it's been a while since my last post, here's something completely unrelated to the above. A Barney Bear and Benny Burro page from Our Gang 32, just because I had it next to the Patterson pages on my desktop. :)
OK! Why stop while I'm at it?
Two more images found next to the above Barks page. I love Barney Google by Billy De'Beck and here are two eh... wonderfully bizarre images. Enjoy!
PS. Got quite a collection of Barney sundays by De'Beck and I'm always looking for more to fill the gaps. Will be happy to buy bulk lots of Barney sundays. Just send me a mail.

Was looking through the Sept. 14, 1929 issue of Liberty the other day.
( Bought two years ago because of "Show Girl in Hollywood" by McEvoy and Striebel. ) To my surprise there were also a few Patterson illustrations. Enjoy!

Just Between Us Girls
Back in the 20's Russell Patterson drew the vignettes for Lloyd Mayer's "Just between us girls" column in Life. These samples are from June 9 and 30, 1927.

Sunday, sunday here again ...
Spending the sunday afternoon with some drawing and restoration work.
Snowy outside, warm inside the apartment. A cup of coffee and the radio playing some good music. Quite cozy.
Just finished inking a puzzle page with Nils the Cat scheduled for the 120 anniversary issue of Kamratposten. The restoration work is on a few Russell Patterson things.
Damn he was a good artist.
Now, back to work...

Russell Patterson Pin-up girls
Do you like the art of Russell Patterson? Of course you do!
Here's a photo of one of his "Pin-up girls" cartoons from March 28, 1945.
Beautiful brush work as always when it comes to Patterson!
If you are interested in buying the original art you should mail the owner right away, as it's for sale. You can reach her at: dreamfarm2 at aol.com

Russell Patterson original art - Part IV
Seems that I forgot to post one of the Russell Patterson pieces I bought earlier this year.
Well, here it is:
Wilbur Jenks never got his Patterson original either. (See previous Patterson posts.) You see, this drawing was still on an artboard with other drawings left to be cut up and sent out to some lucky Patterson fans back in the days.
Somehow, someone must have forgotten. This piece ended up with an editor who kept it for many, many years. It was later sold to a collector and then he sold them to me.
Here is the full piece, spliced togheter quick in photoshop. (The original is too large for my A3 scanner.) Just so you can see them all together.

Even More Russell Patterson Original Art
La - di -da, what about another original Russell Patterson illustration from my collection?
Harry never got his Patterson illustration either.
I think I've said this before but ... there's more to come. ;)

More Russell Patterson Original Art
Here's another drawing by Russell Patterson that I purchased this week.
Unfortunately the left part of the artboard has been cut. And as you can see it's signed, but I believe Dr. H. F. Koppe never got his drawing. Why? I'll get to that in a later post.
And there's a stamp on the back leading me to believe it was published in Life Magazine. Would like to get hold of a copy where this illustration was published. If you know wich issue to look out for, feel free to leave a comment.

Original Russell Patterson illustration art
Just picked up a nice Russell Patterson illustration.
It looks like it's from the 20's.
If anyone knows where and when it was published please let me know.
It should be noted that this illustration also appeared in
the "Art of Russell Patterson" book published a few years ago.
/Joakim.
PS. More RP to come. ;)

More Sexteen by Patterson
Here's the second batch of sexteen gags by Russell Patterson. There's more in the book, so if you like them it's pretty easy to find it on eBay, along with the "Sexteen goes abroad" book that followed. Enjoy!
The weather is sunny, but oh so windy here in Gothenburg. Better put the computer away and then try to get Hedvig along for a walk in the sunshine. If she can be pulled away from her beloved Cintiq ... :)

Russell Patterson 1958
Russell Patterson is probably most well known for his stylish artwork, produced between the late teens and the early forties. Covers for Ballyhoo, American Weekly etc including numerous gorgeous flappers.
A lesser known part of his career is his work for Grayson Publishing Corp. in the 50's.
Not beeing the hot artist anymore, he illustrated at least two joke books in the "Over Sexteen" series.
Just to give you a few samples of his work on these books, I've scanned a few of his gag illustrations from volume 6. If you want to see Patterson artwork from his peak years I recommend the book "The Art of Russell Patterson". Additional samples of rare work can be found at the Russell Patterson blog.
Now, over to the Sexteen gags. Funny or not, here they come...
More to follow.
But tomorrow it's Jetta time!
