Boogie Bug Black Pearl MicroATX Case Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by jmke @ 2008-06-19

Boogie Bug products are innovative and affordable, the Black Pearl is a semi-compact MicroATX case which resembles the Shuttle series of compact cube cases, but with more customization options and enough room to fit a mid-range video card with dual slot cooling.

Size Comparison & Outside Look

Size comparison

The Black Pearl is a compact case that won’t fit a full size ATX motherboard, but does have enough room for two 5.25” devices and a normal ATX power supply. While it is not as compact as the popular Shuttle barebones it’s considerably smaller than any mid/small tower case.

Compared to a 1m80 human, here’s how the cases stack up in height and width:

Depth wise the Black Pearl is also the smallest, don’t expect to fit a high end video card in this case, although it’s sufficiently long for mid-range VGA cards if you don’t install 2 optical drives.

Look Outside

The standard front panel is “Black Pearl” colored and highly reflective, and unfortunately also attracts finger prints quite easily:

The Aluminum front panel is less “chique” and definitely not my favorite:

From the side you can see that the case is quite deep:

The backside reveals a 120mm exhaust fan and the mounting area for the PSU. The case comes preinstalled with I/O shield at the back.

The feet are high quality finish with a soft rubber at the bottom to prevent sliding and absorb vibrations.

The two side panels are identical and feature air holes near the bottom:

At the front of the case you have 2xUSB, 1xFirewire and Line-In/Headphone connections; there’s also a power and reset button. The case is made from aluminum and is extremely light weight;
