Prolimatech Fans Presentation

VGA & Other Cooling by stefan @ 2011-12-13

Prolimatech has now an interesting set of fans on the market, three which are 120mm and four 140mm. Some of the models carry red LEDs and others have blue LEDs and the manufacturer has also made available an aluminum model, optimized for high airflow and pre-equipped with a fan guard for safety. In this article we will learn about their appearance, the bundle they come with, the minimum startup voltages, the noise they produce and how many RPM they have at certain voltages.

Introduction

At first I would like to thank CaseKing.de for offering me a sample of each of the Prolimatech Fans available on the market for this presentation.

Noise Measurements

For performing the noise measurements, each fan was connected to the Lamptron FC5 fan controller and the sound meter was placed half a meter away from the fan, at a 45 degree angle.

Conclusive Thoughts

Prolimatech has now available 7 different fan models which can be used either as case fans (with the included screws) or for cooling CPU/GPU heatsinks.

One of the 120mm fans is the Blue Vortex 12, with blue blades, and shares the technical specifications with the Blue Vortex 12 LED and Red Vortex 12 LED; these have semi-transparent blades and are illuminated by a LED in each corner.

A similar story is with the Blue Vortex 14, which has other two variants, with red or blue LEDs; both 120mm and 140mm fans made of plastic have sleeve bearing.

An Aluminum Vortex model available, with 13 blades instead of 9, a preinstalled fan guard, which provides the most airflow and is more durable, featuring two ball bearing.

Depending if we have a case with a plexiglass window or not, we can choose between the LED models and the ones without lighting; Prolimatech has chosen not to charge extra though for the models included LEDs.

At all fans we can find sleeved cables, to avoid cable clutter.

When necessary, Prolimatech has already included with the fans some speed limiter adapters and 3-pin to MOLEX converters, in case we do not have enough headers on our motherboard, or we ran out of ports on the fan controller.

From the measurements, it resulted that the 140mm fans produce about the same noise at the minimum and maximum possible RPM; however, at the 120mm fans, the model with no LEDs proved to be the most silent, followed by the Red Vortex 12 LED and the Blue Vortex 12 LED. The Aluminum Vortex Silver Wings can provide impressive airflow but also produces higher noise levels.

Even if some of the fans carry the same specifications, their minimum startup voltages are completely different:

Recently, CaseKing.de has made available on the website some interesting fan+heatsink bundles in a push-pull configuration, with heatsink models like Super Mega, Megahalems, Genesis or Armageddon.

The 120mm plastic fans are currently available for 8.9 Euros and the 140mm variants can be bought at CaseKing.de for about 9.9 Euros. The Aluminum Vortex Silver Wings model is more expensive and can be found for about 24.9 Euros.
