Packaging, A Closer Look

Quick Product Introduction:

Back in 2012, AMD has launched the 7800 (Pitcairn) series, to be more exact on 5th of March. Here we can find the Radeon HD 7850 and Radeon HD 7870 GPUs, which are meant to fill the mainstream to high-end segment, at a good sale price. While the Radeon HD 7870 features 1280 stream cores, the Radeon HD 7850 comes with 1024 stream cores. While the first card variants have arrived with only 1GB of GDDR5 memory, the latest versions all come with at least 2GB on a 256-bit interface.

The Radeon HD 7850 GPU of the card we will review in this article has been manufactured with TSMC’s 28nm process and is overclocked quite high from the factory to 1000MHz, from the original 860MHz of the AMD reference board.

But let’s get on with the packaging. The HIS 7850 IceQ Turbo card is shipped in a box which is noticeably bigger compared with the 7790 variant we have reviewed a while back, but the main features remain. On the front and back sides we will find icons of the supported technologies and main features, along with some in-detail explanations:

On one of the box sides, we will find the recommended system specifications that we must follow before purchasing the card:

On the opposite area, we will find see some of the benefits of product registration, along with a small list of box contents:

By removing the top packaging layer, we will find inside a secondary black cardboard box, with a HIS loco on top:

After we lifted the top cover, we were greeted by a small leaflet with fitting instructions:

The card is fully surrounded by a foam protective mold, so it won’t move during transport:

On the bottom layer of the box we get to find the accessories:

Let’s enumerate what we have found here:

-DVI to VGA adapter

-CrossFire Bridge

-HIS Envelope, which contains a pressed DVD with drivers, the Installation Manual, but also a small HIS sticker

A Closer Look Contd.

Coming from the 7790, this card seems massive and sports a large cooling system:

The 57mm blower at the back of the card sucks cold air from inside the case and sends it directly to the heatsink assembly:

The heatsink is located under the plastic shroud, which covers most of the cards’ PCB:

While looking on one of the board sides, we will be able to see only the heatpipe terminations of the cooling system:

On the other side we will see 2x6mm along with 2x8mm heatpipes which connect the GPU plate to the top side of the heatsink:

By looking on the back side of the card we will find out that the cooling system is held only by the four screws around the GPU:

A metallic rib is also attached to the card in order to prevent PCB bending:

A single CrossFire finger is provided for connecting to another card:

The card connectivity is rich, since we can find two Mini DisplayPort connectors, one HDMI and one dual-link DVI-I. On the I/O shield we also have a ventilation grill for hot air evacuation:

An even Closer Look

We have mentioned before the 4 screws that need to be removed in order to have access to the top side of the PCB; these screws are also provided with springs and to avoid scratches, the manufacturer has also placed some rings at each hole:

The PCB is more complex than the cards we have reviewed before; the GPU is surrounded by 8 memory chips and the GPU VRM is located on the left side:

The HIS 7850 IceQ Turbo comes with 5 phases for the GPU as opposed to the OEM variant, which has only 4:

Nearby we will find a Buck Controller for 5 digital phases (CHiL CHL8225G):

The memory chips are made by ELPIDA and come with the model number W2032BBBG-60-F:

On the right side we’ll find the dual 6-pin ATX power connectors but also the 4-pin PWM fan header:

The metallic component that prevents bending can be also seen here, which is held by three screws:

Let’s also take a look at the cooling system; initially, after removing the four screws, the cooler won’t come off as easy as on the previous cards, because of the large blue thermal pads which make contact with the GDDR5, so be careful with that:

In the center of the bottom plate we will see the copper area which makes direct contact with the GPU surface. Also, at each screw hole we will find a white plastic spacer:

A lateral view reveals how the thick heatpipes travel to the top side of the heatsink:

On the back side of the blower we will see a clear round sticker, without revealing any technical specifications:

With the help of the GPU-Z 0.7.0 utility, we could extract lots of information regarding the video card clocks, memory type, pixel and texture fill rate and so on:

To extract even more information, we have used the AIDA64 utility:

Temperature tests:

For finding out the temperatures in both IDLE and Full Load with the fan set on Auto, we left the computer IDLE for about 25 minutes and then started monitoring with HWINFO64 and logged the values obtained while running Heaven 4.0 at 2560x1440 resolution for an additional 40 to 50 minutes, with details at Maximum and Tesselation set to Extreme. During this time, the ambient temperature was held steady at 24.1 degrees Celsius:

From the HIS website, we can download the iTurbo video card utility, which is very handy for customizing the fan speeds, monitoring several parameters or performing overclocking. The interface is user-friendly and presents itself like a wheel:

The UI can open up in a larger form, in order to expose the full-sized interface. The menus can be accessed on top of the applications and these include Home, Info, Overclock and so on. In the Home tab we can find more news regarding the manufacturer, the ongoing promotions or the latest drivers:

The Info tab will display various hardware information regarding the card like card name, GPU series name, die size, memory size, bus width, ROPs and so on:

The Overclock tab comes with adjustments for the GPU Clock, Memory Clock, Board Power Limit (also present in CCC), but also VDDC. These modifications can be saved by assigning them to different profiles or we can simply jump to the factory defaults:

From the Fan Control tab, we will be able to monitor the current fan status or adjust the speed to a fixed or custom profile. These modifications can be saved as “Quiet” or “Cool”:

The final tab, Settings, lets us adjust some of the global options like Load on Startup, Show memory clocks, Disable 2D clocks and so on:

Noise measurements

Before measuring out the noise the video card was producing, we have first measured the noise inside the room the tests took place and we found out it was 30.9dBA (with everything turned off).

At all times, the sound meter was placed 20cm near the video card.

The GPU fan was controlled by the latest version of Catalyst Control Center:

Conclusive Thoughts

The Radeon HD 7850 IceQ Turbo 2GB from HIS sports a massive overclock from the factory so it is able to distance itself from the previously tested cards quite noticeably. With the voltage left at stock, we have tried to raise the clocks even higher, since HIS has put the iTurbo utility to our disposal and here is what we have obtained:

To ensure full system stability, we have ran 3DMark 2011 multiple times and looked for artifacts, black screens and driver resets. When these occurred, we turned the frequencies down a notch and restarted the benchmark utility.

During the stress tests, we have liked the fact that the card has remained quite cool after more than 42 mintes of Heaven 4.0 at the 2560x1440 with all filters applied (58 degrees Celsius). During this time, the fan did only raise at about 43%, while preserving low noise levels. What we found interesting is the fact that when the fan has reached a rotation speed of about 3000RPM, a vibration is induced into the whole assembly making the card a little bit noisier than when it runs with about 3200RPM. We have seen a similar behavior with a Palit card in the past but the card should reach this fan speed only when the surrounded area is not properly cooled. The cooling system is also to be appreciated because it removes the hot air that travels through the fins directly outside the case and does not permit hot air recirculation.

Regarding the performance, this card permits us to run most of the games at the 1920x1080 resolution, with high details but the performance gets lowered a bit when AA levels are applied.

The model that we have just tested is available online for about 196 Euros.

We would like to thank again to HIS for making this review possible!
