SSD by stefan @ 2013-05-29

The E-Drive SSD from KingFast sports high reliability SLC NAND flash from Intel, along with the proven LSI SandForce SF-2281 controller, which makes it ideal in enterprise environments. The product is available in 60GB and 120GB capacities, with no 240GB in sight yet and we also get a full 3-year warranty.

Introduction

At first I would like to thank KingFast for offering a sample of their E-Drive 2.5'' SATAIII SLC 120GB SSD for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

We are not at the first KingFast SSD review since we made ourselves familiar with their F3 series earlier this year. This time we will look upon their latest offering, the E-Drive 2.5’’ SATAIII SLC SSD, with two available capacities so far: 60GB and 120GB. The product ships in a themed box, with some product specifications right on the front:

For additional security, the packaging is fully sealed on both sides:

Besides the SSD itself and some accessories, the E-Drive also ships with some documentation, in Chinese:

We have mentioned before of some accessories right? Well, these are a desktop system mounting adapter, a short SATA cable, but also some screws in a separate re-sealable plastic bag:

The KF2510SCF chassis looks similar to the KF2509MCF model we have previously tested, but it’s easier to disassemble; on the top we will find the name of the SSD, the code name along with the warranty period:

On the right side of the SSD we’ll find a serial number, along with the mounting holes:

A Closer Look Contd.

On the back side the manufacturer did not place any specification stickers, besides a warranty small one in one of the corners, which forbids us opening it up:

The KF2510SCF model was held in only 4 screws which were larger and were also passing through the PCB. This model is built better, and the SSD PCB is held fixed by other four small screws:

On the left side we’ll find the SSD controller and on the right we have no less than eight NAND Flash ICs:

Curious regarding the controller? Well, there is nothing new here, only the SF-2281 from SandForce which we have seen many, many times before:

The Intel 25nm SLC NAND comes with the 29F16B16NCNE1 part number:

On the bottom side of the PCB we can see the placeholders for other 8 NAND Flash chips:

Conclusive Thoughts

The latest E-Drive SSD from KingFast comes with high reliability, endurance thanks to the 25nm SLC Intel NAND and very good performances all over the board, sporting the same LSI SandForce SF-2281 controller. The model is currently available in 60GB and 120GB variants with no sign yet of a 240 version, which would be highly desirable.

Because of the high reliability, this type of product is recommended for servers, data centers, databases, storage arrays or any other enterprise environments. The access time for the SLC SSDs is also lower compared to the MLC counterparts.

Regarding the warranty, the E-Drive comes with only 3 years, while similar products on the market have 5 years.

The build quality has been also increased with this unit and we now have the internal PCB secured with 4 more screws, something we did not see at their latest offering.

MSRP is not available yet but we will update the review as soon as we get it.
