NAS by stefan @ 2013-06-20

QNAP has introduced a new NAS series with the latest QTS 4.0 Operating System. The unit comes with a single-core Marvell CPU at 2.0GHz, 1GB of RAM and features a lot of connectivity options. On the front it looks pretty much the same as the TS-469L, but now we also have an active LCD screen with two buttons for navigation, but the IR sensor is missing since the unit does not come with a HDMI output.

Introduction

At first I would like to thank QNAP for offering a sample of their TS-421 4-bay NAS Server for testing and reviewing.

Product Specifications

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

The TS-421 NAS is a new model from QNAP, aimed for homes and SOHO and comes with a single core Marvell 2.0GHz processor along with 1GB of DDR3 RAM. The product gets shipped inside a large cardboard box, with lots of information on the outside:

One of the laterals also shows us some small photos of the unit, in order to explain the interfaces:

After opening up the box, a small Quick Installation Guide leaflet will welcome us, with information regarding the setup procedure:

The inside of the box is organized similar as we have seen on the last NAS tested from them:

The bundle is located in a separate plain cardboard box:

Inside we have the power brick, two LAN cables and also two plastic bags with the necessary screws for mounting the drives (not re-sealable, unfortunately):

A Closer Look Part II

By turning the brick on the other side, we can see that it was made by EDACPOWER ELEC., with a 12V, 10A rating on the output:

The NAS chassis is also wrapped in a transparent plastic bag:

As with the TS-469L, on the top side of the chassis we have a small sticker with the HDD boot sequence:

The bays sport the same design as we have seen on the high-performance model and are easy to remove:

On the lower left side we have the “Copy-from-USB” button along with the port, but also the Power button:

On the top we no longer have a place-holder, but a real LCD screen and through the menus we are able to navigate with the help of the two buttons (Enter, Select):

To the left side of the screen we have a QNAP logo:

By looking on the lateral sides of the NAS, we can see that the left comes with some extra ventilation holes, while the right has none:

We were accustomed with the last Atom D2700 NASes from QNAP and ASUSTOR to see an integrated power supply; this time it is not the case. In the center we have a silent 90mm fan and on the right there are plenty of ports:

A Closer Look Part III

On the upper side we have the product power rating, along with the MACs for the both LAN interfaces and also the serial number:

A warranty sticker is also placed on the left side of the unit:

Speaking of the ports, we have the circular DC-IN, one USB 2.0, two USB 3.0 ports, two RJ-45 LAN and also two eSATA ports. Near the last eSATA port we also have a Reset button hole:

The HDD trays can be opened and ejected with ease, especially because they do not come with extra security options:

When looking inside the bays we will spot the small daughterboard with the SATA connectors:

The trays are identical to the ones we have seen at the TS-469L, with ventilation holes on the bottom and possibility to mount 2.5’’ drives:

On their bottom we have indications on where to place the screws when installing 2.5’’ drives:

The front side also has a ventilation grill:

A Closer Look Part IV

By removing the top cover we will be able to expose the internals. The interior of the TS-421 is much simpler in each aspect, thanks to the lack of power supply:

Between the back fan and the daughterboard with the SATA DATA/Power ports we have plenty of space:

The frontal LCD screen is linked to the motherboard:

As the other models, the motherboard is placed on the left side of the NAS, with a protective plastic on the back in order to avoid accidental short-circuits. While the other models featured a slot for expanding the memory capacity, this variant has none:

We have spotted however two Hynix H5TQ2G83CFR DDR3 memory chips on the back side of the board:

3.5’’ drives can be installed with four of the included screws:

When using 2.5’’ drives, we will use only three screws:

When the NAS is powered up, the LCD screen will also light up to show different error messages, the NAS boot-up sequence, but also the menu:

The new NAS series come with the QTS 4.0.0 firmware. After connecting to the NAS, we will be asked to enter up and username and password. Initially we only have the admin account available and we have to enter the password that we have defined earlier:

As with the DSM from Synology, we are welcomed by a Quick Start Guide, which will let us know of the main QTS features:

The GUI has been redesigned compared to the latest version and now it looks much better. The applications we have currently installed have their icons posted on the desktop and they look similar to apps installed on a mobile phone or tablet:

By clicking the dial on the lower left corner, we will access the on-screen dashboard, which will show us information regarding the System Health, the HDD health, the Resource Monitor, but also the current HDD temperatures, logged in users, scheduled tasks, storage space and news:

The Control Panel is more organized this time and looks better. QTS offers again a ton of configurable options:

The user gets multiple sub-sections grouped into four main menus: System Settings, Privilege Settings, Network Services and Applications:

QNAP Turbo System Part III

The General Settings menu will allow us to modify settings regarding System Administration, Time, DST, Codepage, Password and will also let us customize the login screen:

The Hardware menu allows us to enable the configuration reset switch, adjust the HDD standby mode, enable light signal alert when we are running out of space or enable write cache. Here we can also configure buzzer and Smart Fan options:

The Power menu comes with relevant options like EuP Mode, WOL, Power Recovery or Power Schedule:

QNAP Turbo System Part V

From the Notification menu, we can specify SMTP servers, SMSC Servers or customize Alert Notifications:

The Firmware Update menu let us perform a Live Update or we can upload a file from our HDD:

The Backup/Restore menu comes with options to perform these actions or to Reset to the factory defaults:

When we have connected external devices, USB printers or UPS systems to the NAS, they will be listed in the External Devices menu:

System Status menu will open up in a new window, with the respective tabs:

Test Setup and Test Results

Test Setup

CPU : Intel I7 3750K Retail @ 4.7GHz

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14

Motherboard : ECS Z77H2-AX Black Extreme

RAM : GeIL EVO CORSA 16GB 2400MHz C11

Video : Sparkle GeForce GTX 560 Calibre

Power Supply : Cooler Master 850W

HDD : Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200.11

Case: Cooler Master ATCS840

To test the NAS performances, the TS-421 was populated with a single OCZ Vertex 4 SSD, formatted with a single volume and the NAS was connected directly to the computer, to avoid any limitations by implying additional hardware like a router. The first simple test was performed by loading the test file onto a RAM drive and then it was copied to the NAS, at its shared folder. The speed was recorded with Total Commander:

The second test was to copy the same file back to the computer; for eliminating any HDD speed limitations, the file was copied back to the RAM drive:

For performing a more advanced test, the Intel NAS Performance Toolkit was used, for performing 5 different test runs. Here are the results:

As an extra test, we have also used ATTO Disk Benchmark:

Conclusive Thoughts

With the coming of the new NAS models like the TS-421, QNAP has introduced the new QTS 4.0, which has been redesigned quite a bit, especially at the GUI level, in order to have a more pleasant to use interface. This model comes with a single-core Marvell 2.0 GHz processor and 1GB of DDR3 RAM, which is not upgradeable as we have seen on the TS-469L we have tested before. The performance was to be expected, not being able to touch the Atom-powered model or maxing out the Gigabit interface.

The chassis is also much simpler on the inside, considering that the power supply has been moved outside, the manufacturer aiming for an optimal airflow. With the TS-421 we get a single 90mm fan in the back, which is silent during use and if we need more cooling power, we can always adjust its speed profiles from the interface.

To aid the installation, we can help ourselves by using the wizard from the web, along with the Qfinder application, which will detect the online NAS and prepare it for initial configuration.

Regarding the multimedia features, the redesigned apps are quite good, but we really miss the Media-Center features and HDMI port we have found on the TS-469L.

The TS-421 Turbo NAS from QNAP can be found online for about 425 Euros, in the same price range with the DS413.
