Packaging, A Closer Look

By reviewing previous ROCCAT products in the past, we could see that the main packaging characteristics and shapes have preserved even with the latest offerings. In this review we will take a look at the anniversary edition of the Kone, to be more exact there are 5 years since the first Kone model was released. On the top side of the packaging we will see a photo of the product (our version is the Hellfire Red) along with the main product features:

With this model we have advertised the new ROCCAT TITAN wheel which includes the world’s strongest axis shaft and most advanced encoder:

The right side of the box is shaped at an angle and from here the top layer can be opened, as a book:

An extra photo of the mouse along with graphical icons representing included technologies can be seen on top:

On the bottom side we have the list of package contents, the system requirements but also tech specs:

This is not all; after opening up the top layer, we will see even more product details and the mouse itself:

The rest of details can be spotted on the back:

A Closer Look Contd.

Besides the mouse, we will also receive a transparent envelope with documents. A small leaflet will inform us that we must ensure the mouse surface is clean at all times and dry as heavy perspiration may cause discoloration. This type of wear we have spotted at most mice which sported rubber coating on top and this mouse does not seem to be an exception but this is the first manufacturer which makes this kind of declaration right from the start, which is appreciated:

The manual is nicely described with mouse functions and how we can set it up:

This mouse model is available in four different variants:

-black sides with red top (our sample)

-orange sides and black top

-blue sides with black top

-white sides and top

Looking at our sample, the color contrast between red and black is interesting and really attracts attention. The rubber coating is present not only on the top but also on the laterals, so the mouse is smooth to the touch. The included cable is braided for additional durability as we have seen on most high-end products:

In the back we have a ROCCAT emblem which hides multicolored LEDs underneath which can be controlled via software:

On the left side of the mouse we have two additional programmable buttons; the one from the right also enables the Easy-Shift[+] function:

On the right side the mouse presents itself with an ergonomic shape, but with no extra buttons:

On the front we can see the durable scroll wheel along with the two extra buttons which are initially programmed as DPI +/-:

The bottom side comes with the 8200DPI PRO-AIM [R3] sensor which has a range between 200 and 8200 and also with the two large PTFE feet. Here we will also find some serial numbers:

The USB connector is also fully customized with the ROCCAT Kone Pure logo on top:

The Software GUI Part I

In order to access the advanced mouse function, we will have to download the latest official drivers, from the ROCCAT website:

The GUI is familiar and the main menus can be found distributed in the top area, while the profile selector can be located on the bottom. In the Main Control menu, we will be able to adjust the Sensitivity Options, the Vertical Scroll Speed, the Horizontal Tilt Speed, but also access the DPI switcher along with the Double Click speed slider:

The button functions can be altered from the next Button Assignment menu:

Here are the functions each button can be mapped to:

Macro + Preset Compilation

Assign a Timer

DPI Setting

Sensitivity

Easy-Aim

The Advanced Control menu allows us to set the sensitivity on both axes, access the Tracking Control Unit and Distance Control Unit, Polling Rate, Sound Feedback and Windows Pointer Speed. From the same menu we can enable or disable Mouse Acceleration and perform a Driver Reset:

The Tracking Control Unit menu will allow us to calibrate the mouse for almost any surface; we have seen visible improvements after the wizard has been completed:

The Color + Lighting Effects can be customized from the next tab; here we can adjust the effects to Fully Lighted, Breathing or Lighting Off, but also choose one of the preset colors or a custom variant:

R.A.D. (ROCCAT™ Achievements Display) is also present here which counts the mouse usage and unlocks certain trophies:

At the last Update/Support tab we will be able to access the Driver Download page or go to Online Support:

Macros can be created from the separate menu and we also have access to the Advanced Editor interface:

Conclusive Thoughts

We really enjoy the new colored anniversary editions of the Kone Pure mice and as the regular version, these are built with good quality materials. The rubberized chassis ensures a good grip even during long gaming sessions and the laser sensor is top notch.

The mouse gets accompanied with a full customization software which also allows us to tune the sensor for almost any surface; during testing, besides regular cloth/aluminum pads we have also used the product directly on the table, which had a shiny surface. After the usual tuning, the mouse was responsive and we haven’t encountered any serious issues like cursor skipping.

The ROCCAT pictogram in the back of the mouse is fully lighted and the color of the LEDs can be customized via software; one thing that we did miss was the option to color cycle the LEDs as on the XTD model.

The R.A.D. feature can be considered as a little bonus which counts our mouse actions and gives us trophies when completing certain tasks.

ROCCAT Kone Pure Color can be picked up online for about 68 Euros.
