Introduction

At first I would like to thank The Keyboard Company and DIATEC for allowing us to test the Red Majestouch-2 Soft Linear Keyboard.

About Diatec:

About The Keyboard Company:

"In 1989 Geoff Thomas bought a computer for his business. He didn't like the keyboard that came with it but when he asked the installation engineer about an alternative was told: "You just get what comes with the computer. I wouldn't know where to get a keyboard.

"This set Geoff on a quest - to find a more compact and stylish keyboard - that left some desk space for his lunchtime gin and tonic.

Eventually, he found a company in Korea who had a smart mini keyboard and a left handed model.

He ordered 50 of each and advertised the surplus in the Telegraph. They sold so well it convinced Geoff that there was a market. The Keyboard Company was born. It's all about choice.

And that is what defines The Keyboard Company. Our main purpose is to offer a wide selection – in an industry that mostly strives for less choice and more standard products.

Equally we give service. Our phone number is displayed on our website. Our phones are answered promptly, by a real person who is knowledgeable about every keyboard and mouse we stock, and who is proud of the products and service that we offer."

Product Features

Cherry MX Red Switch

Better typing feel?

The superior quality we have been seeking is now available!

In pursuit of the real taste of The Cherry MX switch, we have focused on improving "typing experience" thoroughly by renewing from the first process. Enjoy yourself with this real keyboard.

Cherry MX red has got the same features of Cherry MX black switch.

They are linear type which makes no clicking sounds. Spring pressure is only up to 45g so that it provides you a smooth light typing feel!

PC board got all renewed! It delivers you a better duration, quality and typing feel!

Double layers are adopted for a new board. Through a hole of each switch has been firmly soldered.

With this, it can release any excess load or vibration that you make when you type in to a board not only to a metal plate inside. It enables you to enjoy a better typing feel!

Not only a typing feel…. but also software got all renewed!

Now there are many keyboards that are designed for gamers are available, however almost all of them are designed without considering the features of mechanical switches, hence, it results in experiencing unexpected troubles or errors when in use. That may affect the reputation of the mechanical switches.

Our new software is designed for gamers who want a premium keyboard that meets a professional usage.

We made it enable by bringing up a level of data transmission rate to maximum.

With this keyboard, you don't need any other pretentious keyboards!

A true N-key rollover

This is the functionality by which all the pressed keys are recognized on the PC, when they are accessed simultaneously. This feature fully works when the keyboard is connected via PS/2 interface.(Limited to 6 keys typed simultaneously for the USB due to the specifications of USB)

A completely dedicated electronic circuitry to this model!

On our models a diode is soldered on the printed circuit for every key switch to prevent from counter currency.

Compatibility with USB and PS/2

A USB cable is connected to the keyboard. Plug & Play is available on each Windows system.

A PS/2 interface is also available to use the PS/2 Conversion Adapter included in the package

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Our favorite contacts from The Keyboard Company have sent another sample recently, and this time we are talking about a special edition keyboard, which uses the well-known red switches, mostly preferred by gamers, which are also good when performing office work. The Filco keyboard is shipped in a cardboard box of relatively small sizes, with a photo of the product in the middle:

On the lateral, DIATEC uses to include a small sticker which gives us more information on the product inside…wait, are we seeing something suspect in the Body Color area?

Also, on the back we get to see some specifications and also a photo of the included adapter:

Right after lifting the top side of the box we will uncover the keyboard, which is indeed a … Red, special edition variant, with UK layout and also a small leaflet which does not come with instructions written in English…grrrr:

As we have mentioned before, the keyboard is also shipped with a small adapter as an accessory in order to make use of the full N-key Rollover function:

The red casing really fits well with the black keycaps and will surely attract a lot of attention:

A Closer Look Part II

The Keyboard Company only has the UK layout available with the red casing, so some of the keys will have different positioning, but most people which are used to the USA layout should not encounter a lot of issues while adapting:

In the top right corner of the keyboard we will find the NumLock, CapsLock and ScrollLock buttons, along with a nice FILCO logo:

The black/red contrast can be observed much better when looking at the directional key area:

Let’s look at the back of the keyboard too:

In the middle we have printed on a sticker the model number, part number, but also the serial number:

The keyboard comes with some small circular plastic bumps in order to stabilize the chassis, but also some larger rubber feet. An additional set of feet is also available, in order to raise the keyboard at an angle:

The keyboard comes with a standard design without any extra bells or whistles or USB ports:

A Closer Look Part III

A FILCO-branded cable tie is also supplied; as we can see, the black USB cable is not braided:

Also, the USB connector does not feature any branding:

Separately, we can acquire from The Keyboard Company additional keycaps for our favorite peripheral; in this case we felt that the best combination would be a red Escape key along with the red WSAD, which are frequently used in many games:

In order to remove the keycaps from the switches themselves, we will need to use a quality key puller; this one is supplied with some keyboards, but not the one we are currently looking at. Why we are recommending this? Well, this is for avoiding scratches to the keycaps or damages to the switches. As we have mentioned before, this keyboard comes with red switches, which are linear and non-clicky. These switches have appeared in November 2008 on the streets of Tokyo and were heavily used by the Cherry G80-3600 keyboard model, sold exclusively in Japan by the computer hardware company Scythe. These switches have a low actuation force at 45 cN and are tied by the browns for the lowest of the four most common switches:

With the replaced keycaps, we can see the keyboard in a new light:

Conclusive Thoughts

The special edition Filco Majestouch 2 from DIATEC sporting Cherry Red switches and also a red chassis looks really great and is built from high quality materials, as we have been used to in the past. Unlike some regular gaming keyboards which anti-ghosting with limited capabilities, this keyboard features N-key Rollover when connected via PS/2 thanks to the included adapter.

You have probably spotted the replaceable red keycaps which we have featured in our review article; these are to be ordered separately and will add to the cost of the keyboard; for removal we recommend using an original Filco Key Puller or equivalent in order not to scratch the stock keycaps or damage the switches.

The keyboard we have just tested can be ordered from The Keyboard Company website for about £110.00 while the Red ESC Keycap for Cherry MX Switches is £1.7 and the Red WASD Keys for Cherry MX Switches can be had for £4.99.

The Keyboard Company also features an insane number of accessories, which can be ordered in order to enhance the comfort or the durability of the keyboard like wrist rests or for this particular model the Red Braided Replacement Filco Cable.
