Corsair Flash Voyager GO 64GB PC/Mobile Flash Storage Drive Review

Other by stefan @ 2014-05-02

Thanks to the newly released Corsair Voyager GO USB Flash Drive, we will be able to transfer data to and from our mobile devices supporting OTG easier and faster. The Flash Drive can be also used to clear up smartphone NAND space when we reach the upper limit or do regular backups of important information in case something fails.

Introduction

At first I would like to thank Corsair for sending a sample of their Flash Voyager GO 64GB PC/Mobile Flash Storage Drive for testing and reviewing.

The easy way to move photos, music and videos between your Android phone or tablet and your PC

Imagine no more emailing photos to yourself, hunting for a USB cable, or running out of room on your USB OTG compatible Android phone or tablet. Flash Voyager GO is the quick and easy way to move photos, music and videos between your mobile devices and your PCs and dramatically increase your devices’ storage.

The ingenious design has both a USB and a Micro-USB connector, so you can copy photos and videos to your desktop or notebook PC for safekeeping, share music and media between your PCs and your Android device, or just leave it connected to the Micro-USB port for a huge boost to your device’s storage capacity.

Designed for Android devices with USB On-The-Go support

Flash Voyager GO has both a USB 3.0 connector for your PC or Mac, and a Micro-USB connector for your Android phone or tablet. It requires a newer Android device with USB On-The-Go (also known as USB OTG) support.

Not sure if it will work with yours?

The solution to your photo and video problem

Have you ever snapped a photo, and then emailed it to yourself so you’d have a copy on your PC?

Have you ever backed up your photos and videos to a low-resolution site like Facebook or Instagram, and then deleted them to save room?

Or, do you simply like taking photos and videos more than you like to manage your photo collection?

Flash Voyager GO is here to help.

Any time you want to share some media or clear room on your Android phone or tablet, just attach the Flash Voyager GO, select and copy the images and videos you’d like to save, and then copy them to your desktop or notebook PC at your leisure.

You don’t need to be at your PC or hunt for a USB cable. And unlike cloud storage, Flash Voyager GO lets you keep control of your media…and there’s never a monthly fee!

Dramatically increase your device’s storage

The typical smartphone or tablet has 8GB or 16GB of memory. That might seem like a lot at first, but once you add apps, odds are that it just doesn’t have enough room for all the music, photos and videos in your collection. And, upgrading your device’s memory card – or worse yet, replacing it with a higher-capacity model – can be an expensive proposition.

With Flash Voyager GO, just attach it to your PC, copy your collection, and then snap it in to the Micro-USB port on your mobile device any time you want.

Packaging, A Closer Look

The next breed of USB Flash Drives seem to simplify things a lot when transferring data to or from mobile devices (tablets, smartphones) which support OTG thanks to the inclusion of the Micro-USB port. Let’s go a little in more detail by looking at the Flash Voyager GO from Corsair. The product is shipped in a pretty simple cardboard/plastic packaging and gives us a pretty clear look without the need of unsealing the enclosure:

A small product description can be found on the back side, which is written in multiple languages:

The Flash Voyager GO is not shipped alone, but with an included lanyard, an extra yellow protective cap and a small leaflet regarding warranty:

The included black cover is linked to the lanyard and protects the Micro-USB port:

The USB Flash drive can be connected to our tablet/smartphone and it will be detected in a snap:

After formatting the Flash Voyager GO, our Android 4.2.2 smartphone has reported 57.68GB of free space:

We have uploaded some Full-HD TV series to the drive and they have played back without any issues on our iOCEAN X7S:

Conclusive Thoughts

We really like the new USB flash drives with included Micro-USB port for direct connection to the supporting OTG smartphones because they can boost the storage space instantly and we can also use them as backup. Corsair is offering the Voyager GO with a very tiny footprint so it is quite portable and can be also attached to our key chain thanks to the included lanyard.

Not enjoying the supplied black cover for the Micro-USB port? No problem, since Corsair has thought to add a small level of customization by including a secondary yellow replacement cap.

Regarding the drive performance, the reads are very good but when talking about the writes, the performance is mediocre; while the write performance is enough when transferring data from the smartphone/tablet, we will experience some slowness when moving large files from our PC to the drive compared to other high-performance drives.

The drive is fairly priced considering the storage capacity; we can find it online for about 41 euros (64GB). The 16GB drive is available for 15.5 Euros and the 32GB can be snatched for 25 Euro.
