Speakers&Amps by stefan @ 2014-06-23

Luna Eclipse 2.0 speaker system takes part of the Edifier Image product section, which implies a stylish and unique design. This model is pretty compact, comes with active drivers for both high and medium frequencies while the lows are taken care of by two passive radiators which are placed in the back of each satellite. The speakers are also equipped with Bluetooth and for a more convenient control method Edifier also supplies a slim and sleek IR remote with removable battery.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Edifier has its offerings split in three different categories: Image, Multimedia and Studio. The Image brand provides stylish and unique speaker systems which can fit with a variety of applications for home, personal or business use. One iconic product in this section can be considered the Edifier Spinnaker, which have an abstract horn shape and come in two different color flavors. The Luna Eclipse set we will describe in this review have a much more compact design and are mostly suited for desktops. As the Spinnaker, these two are offered with gloss-red and gloss black finishes, so you can choose the one you think it fits better with your current setup. The packaging is quite compact and is fully sealed on the outside with a transparent plastic film:

With this one removed, we will be able to see a photo of the speaker system on the top side, along with the included remote control:

A more in-depth product description which is written in multiple languages can be found on the opposite site:

Considering the box shape, Edifier saw fit to also include a convenient plastic handle:

Manufacturer seals are also present on the sides, for even more security:

If we remove the top packaging layer, we will end up with a plain cardboard box, which retains the same dimensions:

The professionalism does continue with the packaging; both speakers along with the remote are placed in a specially designed mold, while the rest of the bundle is housed in a separate cardboard box:

On the cover of the box we will also find a black envelope, which holds, as you would expect the documentation:

A Closer Look Part II

The User Manual is multi-language and besides the product installation we are also shown the main product components in detail:

Upon a first inspection at the bundle box, we will get to see the power adapter along with the cables inside, but let’s take a look in more detail:

Besides the power brick, we will also receive a stereo jack cable, one soft cloth, a connectivity cable between the two speakers but also the power cable, which helps us connect the brick to the wall socket:

The cable which connects the right speaker (which features all the inputs) to the left is proprietary, but is long enough for almost any setup:

Since the speakers have a glossy finish, they will surely collect dust in time along with fingerprints, so Edifier has also included a branded soft cloth:

The power brick cable ends up with a jack plug:

Here is also a closer look at the power brick; this one is not very large and resembles the one found with mainstream laptops; the red power LED will stay always lit in order to signal power delivery:

On its back side we have the output rating which is 18V at 3A. Efficiency level is rated as V:

The remote has a simple design and with it we can turn on/off the setup, but also set the volume levels:

We think that Edifier made a great choice when using a removable battery design and not proprietary as the one found with the Spinnaker USB-rechargeable remote:

A Closer Look Part III

In the front we have the IR transmitter:

While the black version of the speakers does not have that contrast found with the red model, we can still spot a unique design and top build quality. Each speaker has a moon-like shape while the front is covered by a rubberized coating, similar to what we could find with high-end gaming mice:

When taking a closer look in front we will be able to spot the ?19mm silk dome magnetically shielded tweeter which is protected by a semi-circular plastic bar along with a 3.5 inch mid-range driver:

On the right speaker we will also get to see the IR receptor along with the status LED:

If we look on the side of the right speaker, we will be able to spot a specially designed opening, which begins from the middle and ends at the back of the speaker. This feature is not only for giving the speakers an unique shape, but also houses two passive radiators in order to be able to boost the lower frequencies:

The passive radiators are placed 180 degrees out of phase of each other:

Edifier felt that the remote is not enough and has also placed capacitive buttons on the left side of the right speaker, for more convenience; the power button must be pressed for about 3 seconds to activate in order to avoid accidental presses while the volume controller works right on the spot:

A Closer Look Part IV

The channel is marked on the back side of each speaker and in the middle we have a plastic bar component which adds to the design and features a metallic paint finish:

Zooming in on the connectors, we have the input for the stereo jack plug, the DC-IN with the power rating written below, but also the proprietary connector which links the both speakers via the supplied 6-wire cable:

The bottom of each speaker features a large rubber foot which gives it additional grip and stability:

On the right side of the right speaker holds the Edifier logo:

About the left satellite, we can say that it sports an identical shape, with the exception of the capacitive buttons, manufacturer logo and in the back it only comes with the 6-pin cable connector. Setting up the system does not imply a lot of wiring and if we want to use it only in Bluetooth mode, we won’t need to use the supplied stereo jack cable either:

The activity LED is multi-colored; when we have the red LED on, means that the speaker set is operating and can receive signal via the analog jack interface; if Bluetooth connectivity is requested, the LED will turn blue and the speaker set will start communicating:

Conclusive Thoughts

While the Luna Eclipse speaker set from Edifier looks stunning when placed on our desktop, let’s talk a little bit regarding the sound quality and volume. The speakers succeeded to deliver well-represented highs and mids while watching a couple of TV shows, music videos but we have seen a little bit of lack of bass at certain movies and games which involved explosions, weapon firing sounds and such. This small issue is mainly because of the lack of dedicated active bass drivers and when we have placed side-by-side the Creative T4 Wireless along with the Luna Eclipse, the difference was clear; however, these two speaker systems do not play in the same league and the Edifier setup is priced less than half compared to the Creative T4 Wireless model.

Our recommendation is to look at another setup (with a dedicated subwoofer unit) if you are focused on the lower frequencies and play a lot of action games which involve explosions and want to be blown away when bombs go off. Casual gamers who play a wide variety of game genres and at the same time would like to have their current setup to look top-notch will surely take this system into account.

Bluetooth connectivity works right from the box without the need of extra adjustments, but just make sure that you have the speakers on (red LED) when trying to connect. As expected, when pairing the speakers with a high-quality sound card we can make the proper adjustments so the system will sound sensibly better than on Bluetooth, in our case the Creative Sound Blaster Titanium HD.

While on the Edifier website we can see photos of black and red sets, we could see that on the market a white model is also available, so we have a wide range of color choices which we can pick so they would fit our desktop just perfect. The model we have reviewed can be found online for about 126 Euros, a lot less than their initial launch price so we cannot help but to recommend these to the majority of users which appreciate the Edifier product quality.
