HIS Multi-View X2 USB Docking Station Review

Miscelleneous by stefan @ 2015-03-31

The Multi-View X2 USB Docking Station from HIS is a real help when we are frequently on the road or even at offices if using compact laptops/ultrabooks with a low number of ports. With laptops and Windows tablets, we are able to have up to four displays on at the same time (the internal display, the second display via the tablet/laptop HDMI output, third and fourth display thanks to the dock), but also plenty of USB ports for data transfer, quick charging or connecting various peripherals. In case we lack a LAN port, the dock also provides it for us, along with an additional headphone and microphone jack.

Introduction

At first I would like to thank HIS for offering a sample of their Multi-View x2 USB Docking Station for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

In this article we will look upon another interesting device from HIS, which complements the previously tested Multi-View USB Portable Docking Station product, which we have reviewed previously. This kind of products are quite handy to people which are on the move quite a bit or prefer using laptops/Windows tablets instead of desktops in order to save space and in the same time benefit from the extra ports. The product we are going to take a look upon today is baptized Multi-View X2 USB Dual Display Docking Station and this one is shipped in a larger box, which also shows on the top area a connectivity example along with some of the available features:

By flipping the box on a side, we will learn about the box contents:

On the bottom area, HIS likes to explain more which devices we can connect to this docking station, and we will also get a more detailed product description, features list or system requirements:

Inside, we will get to see the main product along with its bundle, but let’s look closer:

HIS has included here the power adapter, the removable dock stand, one small manual, the USB 3.0 cable and one installation disk:

The power adapter helps to provide additional power to the product and enable fast charging; this one is rated 5V, 4A on the output:

The adapter cable ends up with a jack plug:

Inside the small manual, HIS will guide us on how to proceed with the software installation; as with other DisplayLink devices before it, the user needs to make sure that the software is installed prior to hardware installation. The latest version of the software can be always picked up from the DisplayLink official website:

The dock stand sports the same color with the main product and will help it stand vertically:

A Closer Look Contd.

On its bottom we have some serial numbers printed, along with two rubber feet which provide more grip:

By using a single USB 3.0 port on the host device, we can enhance the connectivity options quite a bit; imagine you have a laptop with only two or one USB port or a Windows 8.1 Pro tablet which again, features a single USB 3.0 port. On both back and front sides of the Multi-View X2 we have additional options in order to plug in additional devices with zero hassle; let’s zoom it a bit:

On the back side of the device we have no less than four USB 2.0 ports for connecting peripherals or storage devices; next we have one LAN port:

Further on, we have one DVI port which supports resolutions up to 2048x1152 and one HDMI with the same specification:

To the right end we have the USB 3.0 port which connects our laptop/tablet device to the dock, but also the DC-IN 5V port for supplying more juice to the connectors:

In the front, HIS has placed two extra USB 3.0 ports which support fast charge, but also one microphone and one headphone jack:

On the lateral, we have the place to connect the stand and here we will also find a HIS logo:

With the help of the stand, the Multi-View X2 product will take up very little space on the table:

The Software Interface

As we have mentioned before, the Multi-View X2 dock has at its core the DisplayLink technology which permits different data and video ports via a single USB 3.0. In order to take advantage of this technology, we also have to install the latest available drivers, in order to avoid certain compatibility options. After the software has been installed, we can surely plug in the dock and we will see some extra processes take place if we have different products connected to the dock. A tray icon with also appear to offer us more options:

Since this dock has two video-out ports, we were able to connect to monitors in the same time to it and each of it come with some extra options we can set:

As mentioned before, each video output supports resolutions up to 2048x1152:

If the monitor we are connecting has a lower supported resolution, a smaller list will be displayed:

With the help of the Control Panel inside Windows, we will be able to customize more the display placement, how they should be orientated, main display and so on:

Conclusive Thoughts

The Multi-View X2 USB Docking Station from HIS is a real help when we are frequently on the road or even at offices if using compact laptops/ultrabooks with a low number of ports. With laptops and Windows tablets, we are able to have up to four displays on at the same time (the internal display, the second display via the tablet/laptop HDMI output, third and fourth display thanks to the dock), but also plenty of USB ports for data transfer, quick charging or connecting various peripherals. In case we lack a LAN port, the dock also provides it for us, along with an additional headphone and microphone jack.

The only downside we are seeing with this product is the fact that we cannot output with this specific model on HDMI up to 4K resolutions, but HIS already has prepared newer models which can do that; however, those models do not offer as many connectivity options as the Multi-View X2 USB Docking Station.

The Mac/Windows HIS Multi-View X2 USB Docking Station is available online for about 90 Euros.
