OUKITEL U10 Smartphone Review

Smart Phones by stefan @ 2015-08-28

OUKITEL has impressed us with the release of the new U10 model, with features a 5.5’’ Full-HD JDI screen, one of the latest MTK 64-bit SoCs, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, dual-SIM capabilities but also a good Samsung 3M2 13MP CMOS sensor, which is able to produce good quality photos. The manufacturer has adopted a modern design with 2.5D curved glass while on the back we will find a super-thin metal alloy chassis so the phone does have a thickness of only 7.9mm, with the expense of a non-removable battery. The SIM tray can be ejected thanks to the included pin and supports multiple configurations: SIM+SIM or SIM+TF card for storage expansion.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank GearBest for supplying us with a sample of the OUKITEL U10 smartphone for testing and reviewing.

Product Specifications:

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Thanks to GearBest, we have got the chance to try out a smartphone from another manufacturer and to be more precise, OUKITEL; the model offered to us is one of the latest ones, the U10 5.5’’ model, which is incorporating the 64-bit MTK SoC along with 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 13MP back shooter. The product is shipped inside an orange-colored medium-sized cardboard box, with a top chromed logo of the manufacturer:

On the bottom side we will get to see the technical specifications and also that the enclosure comes completely sealed (we must thank though the people at Customs for unsealing it in advance…):

The main product is wrapped inside a bubble bag for additional protection during transit:

On the lower layer we will get to see the charger, USB cable but also a small envelope:

The power adapter has an OEM look and is rated on the output as 5V at 1A:

On the top it does house a single USB port:

The USB cable connectors are a little bit modified for more compactness:

As documentation, in the envelope we will receive a warranty certificate along with a Quick Guide:

A Closer Look Part II

The Quick Guide also explains to us how to use the fingerprint reader feature:

OUKITEL U10 comes with a pre-applied plastic screen protector, so the only thing we need to do is to remove the upper layer:

This particular smartphone sports a 2.5D curved glass and a 5.5’’ JDI display with very good digitizer responsiveness:

On the top we’ve got the very handy notification LED, the proximity sensor, the speaker but also the 5MP selfie camera sensor:

The bottom area of the screen is an interesting subject of discussion; in the initial press shots, the Menu, Home and Back buttons were LED lighted but it seems that in its final form the smartphone is missing these features; we think that this is only a software issue, the LEDs should be there underneath and an OTA update should fix this:

OUKITEL U10 is quite thin, only 7.9mm at the expense of a non-removable battery:

On the left side of the terminal we would be able to spot the SIM tray:

A Closer Look Part III

The bottom area does come with the USB port and MIC port hole:

On the right side we have the Power/Standby button along with the Volume rocker, which are easy to access:

On the top area of the terminal we only have the headphone jack:

OUKITEL has not opted for a full-aluminum back but has combined the middle metallic layer with plastic on top and bottom areas:

On the top we can spot the 13MP camera lens along with the dual LED flash; further down we will be able to see the square fingerprint reader:

The bottom area houses the loudspeaker grill:

With the help of the supplied aluminum pin, we will be able to remove the SIM tray:

Here is a closer look at the tray, which allows installation of either two SIMs or one SIM and one TF card for memory expansion:

The Software GUI Part I

OUKITEL comes with the proposal of a custom launcher, featuring modified icons and no drawer, iOS style; U10 comes with Android 5.1 preinstalled:

The camera application is the stock MTK one, with a few added options like Face Beautify mode:

In the options menu of the same application we can choose up to 16MP resolution for photos but clearly this is an interpolated value, so it would be better if we stick with the original 13MP:

The Music application will index the appropriate content from storage and display it sorted upon multiple tabs:

Play Store is the well-known application store from Google, from where we can choose a wide variety of apps to install, free and paid:

The Calendar application can be found in its stock format:

Next we could remind of the Chrome browser, which ships with the OUKITEL U10 ROM:

Email application is the stock one from Android Lollipop and with it we can connect to different email servers:

Facebook is one of the most used social applications and the manufacturer saw fit to include it:

The Software GUI Part II

We have also found the stock File Manager, which comes with all MTK ROMs:

The Clock application is also in its stock form, without custom skins:

The Gmail application is pretty handy to check your email address associated to your account but not only:

The Gallery app will index the photo contents and display it in a nicer format by creating thumbnails:

Google Photos is another service OUKITEL saw fit to include:

We have a separate folder with some extra applications available, one of them being the usual Flashlight one, which uses the back flash LEDs to operate:

Here we also have the stock Calculator application:

FM Radio will work properly only when earphones are connected to the suitable port:

We also have Sound Recorder for recording different sounds of our choice:

The Backup & Restore application is operating properly when we have a TF card installed with our device:

The Software GUI Part III

The Downloads section is just a shortcut to the Downloads folder, which is created by default in the root path of the storage:

One other social application, widely used nowadays is Twitter:

Google Maps also comes installed on the device:

Another widely used app now is WhatsApp, which OKUITEL has pre-installed with the U10 ROM:

We can access OTA updates from the “Wireless Update” application:

YouTube application for accessing our favorite clips is also pre-installed:

Next we could remind of the Phone application, widely used for dialing specific numbers or accessing people numbers we have been most recently in contact:

From the Contacts application, we will be able to access our agenda, which is synchronized with the Google Contacts platform online:

Messaging is the place to go for sending SMS messages:

Another browser we can work with initially is the stock Android 5.1 one:

The Software GUI Part IV

Of course we cannot omit to talk about the Settings area, the place to go for modifying system-wide stuff:

From the Wi-Fi menu, we can connect to various networks, given we have correct credentials for them:

The same way, the Bluetooth menu will allow us to pair with compatible hardware:

OUKITEL U10 does also support the HotKnot data transfer feature;

Settings related to SIM cards and their related services can be accessed from the next menu:

We can always check the total traffic on all interfaces from the Data Usage menu:

From the More menu, we are able to enable Airplane mode, choose the default messaging application, work with tethering stuff and more:

The Software GUI Part V

Inside the Display menu, we will be able to change current wallpaper, adjust the current brightness levels, sleep timer, notification LED functionality, adjust font size and more:

The System Gestures can be accessed from the next menu:

We have next the Sound & Notification menu, where we can access the pre-defined profiles and customize them; we also have here some miscellaneous options available:

Each profile has the option to modify the volume levels, the current ringtone, notification sound, vibration behavior and so on:

Here are the miscellaneous options we were talking about a while earlier:

Notification

Interruptions

Sound Enhancement

From the Storage menu, we can take a look at current internal storage status, but also the card storage (if applicable); from the same menu, we can also choose the default write disk:

The Software GUI Part VI

The battery menu shows us the battery usage level, but also which processes take up the most battery resources:

From the Apps menu, we can take a look at the installed applications, remove the ones which are not needed and can also close some of the currently running processes:

The secondary gestures menu is baptized Gesture Unlock:

From the Location menu, we can enable the hardware GPS and define the level of location precision for some of the installed applications:

The Security menu comes with the usual settings:

From the Fingerprint menu, we can work with the fingerprint reader; first we will be asked to set a code, in case the fingerprint identification mode fails:

Afterwards we can register a new fingerprint for usage by accessing the New Fingerprint menu:

The Software GUI Part VII

We will be prompted to press on the reader multiple times for registration:

Next, we have the Accounts menu where services we have logged in will appear:

Language & Input menu allows us to define the system language, work with the spell checker, set a different system keyboard than the default, enable voice input and more:

From the Backup & reset menu we can choose to save some settings to the cloud, but also reset the device to factory defaults:

Date & time can be adjusted from the next menu:

Schedule power on & off is a regular MTK ROM setting:

Accessibility menu comes with the usual settings:

The Software GUI Part VIII

Seems that OUKITEL U10 ROM is equipped with a third menu, which is baptized Smart Somatosensory which allows hand movements in order to perform different actions:

The printing services will be shown in the next menu:

The Developer menu options are already unlocked:

From the About phone menu, we can check out the smartphone name, Android version, internal memory size, RAM size, screen size, screen resolution and also the interpolated camera sensor values:

Test Setup and Test Results Part I

As the SISWOO C55, OUKITEL U10 smartphone is equipped with one of the latest 64-bit SoCs from MTK, the MT6753 (detected incorrectly by CPU-Z as MT6735 which is, in fact a quad-core part), which is a WorldMode 4G LTE platform based on the ARM Cortex-A53 64-bit processor with ARM Mali-T720 graphics. All eight cores run at a maximum speed of 1.3GHz (there is also a version of MT6753 at 1.5GHz though) and the SoC does support dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, includes a 16MP image signal processor and also supports 1080P Full-HD displays, along with Full-HD video recording and playback.

The Device tab informs us on the supported screen resolution, manufacturer, screen density, total RAM and usage but also total internal storage and usage:

The System tab will supply us more information regarding the board type, Android version, kernel, resolution, free memory and so on:

The Battery tab will show the current status; the battery sensor is working properly on this model:

The new Thermal tab will update us with the live temperatures in different areas:

The application also shows live data from the available sensors:

To test out the performances of the OUKITEL U10 smartphone in more detail, we have installed some freeware benchmark apps from the Google Play Store in the internal memory (did not transfer them to a 3rd party microSDHC card, in order not to influence the test results). Afterwards, the applications were ran one-by-one, and we recorded the final scores; the obtained results were also compared with the previously tested systems, in order to spot the performance differences.

Photo Samples

OUKITEL U10 is equipped with Samsungs’ ISOCELL 3M2 CMOS sensor and can produce high-quality shots at 13MP and very fast focusing times. The colors are accurate and the scenes seem to be well focused in all the areas, no matter the environment: landscape, close-ups etc.

Of course, you can always check out the full-resolution, unaltered versions at this LINK.

Screen Viewing Angles

The 5.5'' Full-HD JDI display has a good color reproduction and when viewed from different angles it does not produce distortions.

Conclusive Thoughts

During our time with the OUKITEL U10 we have seen that the call quality is good, while the unlock feature via the fingerprint sensor is quite handy. Unlike some other models on the market, we have seen that the digitizer is quite responsive so we should not have any issues while performing different activities with the product.

Since this model is equipped with a smaller capacity battery, of just 2850mAh, it was not able to score as good as the SISWOO C55 in this department, which includes a rechargeable battery of 3300mAh; as usual, we have performed the test via the AnTuTu free benchmark:

The hardware GPS works very well and the lock-on times are super-fast, so no issues in this area; also, the tracking capabilities with applications as Runkeeper perform admirably.

As negative points for this model, we would like to remind that on our sample the Volume rocker was rattling a bit, the fact that we have spotted a slight battery drain while the U10 sits in IDLE mode (but this is surely a software issue which can be improved via an OTA update), the fact that we are not offered an extra plastic screen protector and also there is no available silicone or faux leather case inside the box.

GearBest is offering this model for just $159.99 in two different colors so you are free to choose your preferred one.
