ROCCAT Nyth Gaming Mouse Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2015-09-29

ROCCAT Nyth is like a breath of fresh air in the already crowded gaming mice market which sports quite a modular design with replaceable right side panel, no less than four different sets of buttons, a smooth durable plastic texture, catchy LED light effects and a comfortable shape for lengthy gaming sessions. Considering that we are getting plenty of accessories, ROCCAT saw fit to also include a carry case and the software available for the Nyth is one of the most advanced we have seen to date, which maintains the feature we did like in the previous revisions, the audio feedback.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank ROCCAT for offering us a sample of the Nyth Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

Product Features, Specifications

Product Features:

MODULAR THUMB ZONE

The Nyth features an evolutionary modular thumb zone where you can individually place up to 12 high quality, tactile mechanical buttons. This custom button area sets a new standard in modularity; completely flexible, it allows you to configure single and double buttons easily in a vast array array of combinations to suit your gaming needs. Out of the box, the Nyth’s buttons can be arranged in 18,369 different layouts. Check out the Nyth configurator to see how many ways you can build your victory.

HOTSWAPPABLE SIDEGRIPS

All gamers are united by a common love for gaming, but a gamer’s style is truly unique. To further reflect the individuality of the modern gamer, Nyth features super ergonomic, hotswappable side grips. No matter whether your gaming style is chilled out palm grip or action packed claw grip – or both depending on the game – you can mix it up on the fly. Adding these hotswappable grips to the modular buttons, the Nyth’s hardware can be laid out in 36,738 ways.

IMPROVED EASY-SHIFT[+]™ FUNCTIONALITY

Easy-Shift[+]™ lets you assign a secondary function to each of the mouse’s 18 plugged-in buttons. This can be activated once the Easy-Shift[+]™ button is held down, arming you with a total of 39 functions. On the Nyth, this is a dedicated button conveniently located beneath the traditional side buttons. The power of Easy-Shift[+]™ coupled with the Nyth’s deep modularity brings the total number of hardware/software layout and function combos up to a staggering 1024 – one sextillion!

BUTTON & SIDEGRIP CARRY CASE

1024 is a higher number than there are atoms in a gram of mass, meaning there are more possible Nyth combos than there are atoms in the mouse! Nyth’s customization possibilities simply know no bounds. 1024 isn’t enough? No problem – this is just the start. The Nyth features 3D print support, meaning you can design and download your own parts for a never before seen level of customization – making your Nyth truly unique to you. The included solid-build carry case will keep your unused sidegrips and buttons safe and ready for use. Click here to get to the 3D library store.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

We haven’t reviewed a device quite some time from our friends at ROCCAT, but recently we have had on hand their latest release in terms of gaming mice and to be more precise the Nyth model; Nyth does not sport a boring design like low-cost manufacturers use, but comes with a futuristic shape and lots of configuration modes, both physical and via software; the shape of the packaging also carries the ROCCAT signature:

The top cover opens up like a book in order to reveal some words on the product, but here we can also see how the product does look like without unsealing the box:

More details on the mouse like main features and specifications are available on the back:

The packaging houses one large accessory box, an extra side grip and the Nyth itself:

The accessory box also looks quite neat and reminds us a bit of the first ROCCAT mouse bundle box:

Inside we will get to see foam material in the same color as the ROCCAT logo, where we can place all available accessories while on the road:

No less than four types of buttons are available to be installed (one set is preinstalled on the Nyth):

Nyth comes with a dark grey color scheme, while the plastic texture is very pleasant to the touch; under the grey armor we will find the secondary black plastic layer; in the dorsal area ROCCAT has placed the product logo:

A Closer Look Part II

The programmable button on the top can be moved left or right and is initially set as “tilt left/right”:

Near the rubber scroll wheel we will get to see the Easy-Shift function button:

The left mouse area is filled with buttons which are easy removable for replacement depending on the titles we are playing:

The back side of the mouse also lights up along with the ROCCAT logo:

On the right side we have a removable side panel:

This one is held in place with magnetic force:

Here is a closer look at the removed side panel; it does also have a PTFE foot attached to it:

There is also another, wider side panel available which also sports the ROCCAT logo:

A Closer Look Part III

On the bottom area of the mouse we will get to see the central 12000 DPI laser sensor lens (with adjustments possible in 1 DPI increments), PTFE feet in each corner but also a Release button for removing all left buttons at once:

Installation of a different button arrangement can be done in seconds:

As most high-end mice, the Nyth comes with a fully-braided cable:

The USB connector is also slightly modified with the ROCCAT branding:

AS documentation, we will receive a set of nice stickers, disposal information leaflet but also one Quick Installation Guide:

The Guide is describing the mouse components step-by-step and initial operation procedures, in multiple languages:

Right after connecting the mouse to a spare USB port, we will get to see the lighting system already in operation:

Light Show

Thanks to the configurable software interface (ROCCAT Swarm), we will be able to set the LEDs in different operating modes and also adjust the colors:

The Software GUI Part I

ROCCAT pairs Nyth with a brand new Swarm software which also brings together features like AlienFX or Swarm Connect. The configuration is split onto multiple tabs and the initial area can be customized as we please; we will usually insert here the settings we are modifying frequently like DPI values or Illumination settings:

The Settings tab allows us to fine-tune the performances of the mouse, by allowing us to modify the Sensitivity Options, Vertical Scroll Speed, Horizontal Tilt Speed, the Double-Click Speed, adjust the DPI levels but also work with the Windows Pointer Speed:

From the Button Assignment area, we will be able to configure the button layout, choose one of the pre-defined layouts, but also reconfigure the functionality of the buttons:

Here are the groups of functions we can assign to each button:

Plenty of macros are pre-defined for most well-known titles:

We can set specific timers for each button:

As Basic Functions, we can assign the following:

We also have Advanced Functions available to work with:

The Software GUI Part II

Internet functions are also available:

Next we have Multimedia functions:

The Open sub-section has the following options available:

Talk FX feature has a menu of its own:

We could also remind you of the System & OS actions:

This is not all! If we scroll down in the same menu, we will be able to assign functions to the buttons located on the top area of the mouse:

The Advanced section menu takes care of Advanced Sensitivity adjustment, TCU calibration, DCU, Polling Rate, Illumination custom settings but also Sound Feedback:

TCU will calibrate the mouse sensor for the current surface:

The Profile Manager will open up in a separate window, where we will be able to work with the currently defined profiles:

The Macro Manager will let us define new macros, but also work with the predefined ones:

Conclusive Thoughts

ROCCAT Nyth is like a breath of fresh air in the already crowded gaming mice market which sports quite a modular design with replaceable right side panel, no less than four different sets of buttons, a smooth durable plastic texture, catchy LED light effects and a comfortable shape for lengthy gaming sessions. Considering that we are getting plenty of accessories, ROCCAT saw fit to also include a carry case and the software available for the Nyth is one of the most advanced we have seen to date, which maintains the feature we did like in the previous revisions, the audio feedback.

The Twin-Tech R1 Sensor which can drive up to 12000DPI and with the possibility to work with 1DPI increments is quite unique. We can also adjust the polling rate up to 1000Hz, have the response time of 1ms and Nyth also features 50G acceleration. The mouse features are also possible thanks to the included 72MHz Turbo Core V2 32-bit ARM-based MCU with 576kB of onboard memory. While these features may seem at first only as over-the-top “marketing” material, we have taken the Nyth for many hours for a spin in Guild Wars II (recently free-to-play), Neverwinter, AION and Triad Wars, only to see the mouse performing in optimal conditions.

The only “issue” we have encountered with Nyth is that we found us pressing by mistake the “9” button key more frequently, because that is the area where we do usually rest our thumb, but this can be solved in a number of ways (use different profiles, disable the “9” button completely and so on).

ROCCAT Nyth is available online for about 119Euros; indeed, it is not for each and every budget-conscious person out there but we think that it is a very good investment on the long run.
