Corsair VOID Wireless Dolby 7.1 Gaming Headset Review

Others by stefan @ 2015-09-30

With the VOID Wireless, we are getting quite a bit of improvements regarding product comfort, LED lighting system and software configuration. Corsair has added the RGB system for extra eye candy, but we have found more useful the two LEDs near the MIC which light up in order to signal different product statuses. The two 50mm drivers are able to deliver good gaming-grade quality sound and we found the microphone fidelity about the same as on the Vengeance 2100 and this is not a bad thing since that one impressed us positively too.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Corsair for offering us the VOID Wireless Dolby 7.1 Gaming Headset for testing and reviewing.

Don’t pause for sound. See it with InfoMic and CUE Control

InfoMic brings critical information to the end of your microphone, enabling an instant “heads up” for everything you need to know about in-game audio: EQ settings, Dolby, microphone mute status, and battery life – all visually communicated via the LED indicators next to the microphone.

CUE Control enables rapid re-spec of your audio settings on the fly. The digital dial and push button combo allows quick volume changes and EQ preset swaps, and toggles Dolby 7.1 on or off, all with a single control.

Unrivaled Comfort

Your ears aren’t round, so why buy a headset with round earcups? Our “True Form” shape fits your ears like a glove… for your ears. And when it’s time to embark on marathon gaming sessions, the microfiber-wrapped memory foam ear pads enable extended play.

RGB Lighting under your command with CUE software

Express yourself with 16.8 million color options to match your gear and your individual style. LEDs in each ear cup have fully adjustable power, pattern and color to provide anything from subtle and restrained, to eye-grabbing intensity.

The CUE (Corsair Utility Engine) enables all this, and more. And with CUE Link, your Corsair RGB gaming gear can all work in harmony, whether it’s simply synchronizing your colors, or selecting wave and ripple effects that extend across your keyboard, mouse, and headset.

Epic immersion and true multi-channel audio

Efficient 50mm neodymium drivers create staggering bass, scintillating highs, and towering dynamic range, and genuine Dolby 7.1 surround delivers lethally accurate positional audio.

Noise cancelling microphone

If you’re a team player, you need crystal clear voice communication. The noise-cancelling microphone puts your voice in the spotlight – and nothing else.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Corsair is not standing still so they have recently released a new series of headsets for their Gaming series of peripherals. The new family is composed of the VOID Stereo which sports universal compatibility with PCs, consoles and mobile; then we have the VOID USB in two different colors with feature easy one-cable connection with built-in Dolby 7.1 and the high-end model also comes in two different colors and is baptized VOID Wireless. The yellow/black version of the Wireless has quite a catchy look and Corsair has named it Special Edition – YellowJacket. Our sample is the regular, all-black one and its main feature is the 2.4GHz connection for extra freedom and very accurate Dolby 7.1. Some of the main product features are listed on the top area of the external packaging layer:

On one of the box sides, Corsair has placed a more extensive list of product features, which are described in multiple languages:

The opposite area comes with the rest of the product goodies explained like 2.4GHz connection, Dolby 7.1, RGB configurable lighting, InfoMic Feature or CUE Control:

The main product components are described on the back side, along with the technical specifications:

After removing the top packaging layer, we will end up with a separate cardboard enclosure in yellow color, which protects the main product:

The VOID Wireless headset is also accompanied by its bundle, which is composed of the USB cable and USB transmitter/receiver, the Quick Guide, a Safety Leaflet, the Environment Protection Leaflet, but also a Warranty Guide:

The Quick Guide tells us in more details with detailed drawings how to operate the product:

The 1.5m USB cable is used for charging the headset and features a custom color and design:

The same yellow/black color scheme can be found with the USB dongle, which looks like a bigger USB Flash Drive; on the top the manufacturer has placed the logo along with a white activity LED:

On the back side we get to see a sticker with product IDs and the serial number:

A Closer Look Part II

Coming from the Vengeance 2100 Dolby 7.1 headset we have reviewed back in 2014, the 2015 model has been completely redesigned regarding the cups shape, controls and is now much sturdier thanks to the metallic frame:

The right cup is not featuring extra controls but here we will get to see the RGB component composed of multi-colored LEDs which are covered by a non-removable black and shiny plastic component:

Moving to the left cup, we will get to see a similar RGB LED arrangement but we can also spot the MIC Mute and Power On/Off buttons; with this particular model we have seen a bit difficult to access the Power On/Off button when we are actually wearing the headset because it is a little too close to the metallic frame:

On the side of the cup we have the USB connector for charging purposes:

The volume controller has been also redesigned; besides setting the levels, we can also change now between EQ profiles by pressing it inwards:

The earcups now come with a “True Form” shape for fitting all shapes of ears; the microfiber-wrapped memory foam is very comfortable during prolonged use and does not pick up lint as easy as the previous revisions; each cup features a 50mm driver with a frequency response between 20Hz and 20kHz:

The metallic frame connects to the top section which upper layer is made of plastic:

The headband of the VOID Wireless feels more comfortable and softer than the one we have found with the Vengeance 2100; this is probably because of the more consistent padding:

A Closer Look Part III

It can be adjusted in small steps and if we look closer on the inside, we will get to see additional metallic insertions:

The MIC shape has been also redesigned and now we have found its body more flexible:

At the end of the MIC we will get to see a series of LEDs which communicate us EQ settings, MIC Mute status, Dolby 7.1, battery life and the moment when the headset is about to enter standby in order to save battery life when not used (very useful feature which was not present on earlier models):

The dongle will also tell us the current connection status of the headset; if the LED light remains lit, then we have a connection; while the headset is turned off, the LED light will keep blinking:

With Corsair Utility Engine, we will be able to configure the RGB feature in different modes; here are just some of the colors we can achieve with the software:

Corsair Utility Engine GUI

The Corsair Utility Engine software is quite modular and if we have another Corsair product on our system using it, it will install the necessary drivers and enable the interface right away; we can switch between the interfaces on the lower side of the GUI. The Audio Tab will help us adjust the levels for both MIC and Sidetone, but also enable the Dolby Surround feature. Also here we will get to see the predefined EQ settings:

The 10-band EQ values can be altered for each profile:

Inside the Lighting tab, we can configure in more detail the InfoMIC feature, but also adjust the brightness, current effect and speed of the selected light effect:

We have a pretty good selection of light effects available via the menu:

The Device menu will show the currently connected devices and strictly regarding VOID Wireless, we can choose to disable the device lightning entirely for saving battery life, see the firmware/dongle firmware versions, status of the product and battery life which is described in %. Corsair Utility Engine also permits firmware updates from the same menu:

Conclusive Thoughts

With the VOID Wireless, we are getting quite a bit of improvements regarding product comfort, LED lighting system and software configuration. Corsair has added the RGB system for extra eye candy, but we have found more useful the two LEDs near the MIC which light up in order to signal different product statuses. The two 50mm drivers are able to deliver good gaming-grade quality sound and we found the microphone fidelity about the same as on the Vengeance 2100 and this is not a bad thing since that one impressed us too.

We have tried the headset while watching TV shows, some movies but also while gaming in Triad Wars, GTA V, The Crew, Carmageddon Reincarnation and AION, while using Skype for conference. The best setting for us was Pure Direct because it delivers unaltered sound material and if one needs additional tuning, it can always customize the respective EQ levels.

We have found that our sample has lasted about 10 hours and a half with a full charge and the lighting system turned on, which should be more than enough for one or two lengthy gaming sessions. The headset can be charged while in use so no need to worry about that.

The SE version of this headset also comes with an USB dock for the dongle, which is not included with the standard model.

VOID Wireless can be found online for about 127 Euros, which we think that is reasonable considering what the manufacturer is offering.
