IN WIN 805 Mid-tower Computer Case Review

Cases by leeghoofd @ 2015-11-17

In Win is one of those manufacturers which really dare to innovate within their growing lineup of computer cases. Last year they stole the show with their highly acclaimed S-Frame, an open air chassis made from a single sheet of aluminium. Of course these high tech cases come at a cost! This year at Computex they surprised friend and foe again with the H-frame case; compare it with a transformer case, that can open and close allowing to access the innards. It is quite expensive but nevertheless a stunning concept case that will be produced in limited numbers. Today however we are taking a look at one of their more affordable nevertheless breathtaking case solution, the IN WIN 805 Mid-tower case.

Unboxing

The IN WIN 805 is a see-through skeleton case structure; maybe easiest comparable look wise with them flashy full acrylic cases from a decade back. A see-through case is a challenge for any case modder as the cable management has to be top notch, this of course because every flaw will be visible. Instead of using acrylic panels on an aluminum body IN WIN went flat out by including three tempered 3mm glass plates. Words nor pictures can exactly describe how great this mid tower chassis looks. This IN WIN 805 is available in three different front bezel colors: standard black, red and gold. The versions that include the USB 3.1 (type-C) in the front bezel also feature an illuminated IN WIN logo. The standard USB3.0 version has got this LED logo function trimmed.

Even though the IN WIN cases sport high end materials and superb craftsmanship, their box art seems pretty basic. Nevertheless the packaging made sure the tempered glass plates were still in mint condition after the road trip to the Madshrimps lab.

I don't think the see through case needs any further explanation, the black anodized aluminum frame is clearly visible from all angles via the tempered glass plates. IN WIN assured us the used coating allows the glass to withstand some abuse, though I'm honest I was not in any reviewer mood to verify this specific claim; I would handle the glass panel with care. Good that IN WIN used an aluminum frame to reduce the total weight as these 3mm glass panels weigh a ton.

Being able to see the backside of the motherboard panel also tells the tale that if you really want your build to shine, the cable management will require some extra attention. After removing one of the tempered glass panels we can have a better look at the In Win 805 innards. At first glance the storage with just two HDD bays looks sparse, though there's some hidden storage there.

The specs list is nothing out of the extra ordinary, though reveals the possibility to install up to four 2.5" storage devices besides the two 2.5" / 3.5" drives in the hard cage. Sadly no possibility to install an optical drive without seriously modding the case.

A Closer Look

Once we completely strip the In Win 805 the numerous hidden storage options become more apparent. On the backside of the mainboard we spot three fast removable 2.5" HDD/SSD brackets; unscrewing a supersized thumbscrew is all there is needed to remove these storage devices. The drive or SSD are mounted on the bracket by four tiny screws. The humongous large cutout at the back of the processor area facilitates the easy install of any cooling device on the motherboard. The rest of the cut-outs to route cables and such are omnipresent too.

For larger storage up to two 3.5" HDDs can be installed in tool-less HDD trays, these are also 2.5" drive compatible. A fourth 2.5" HDD/SSD is located on top of the two former mentioned drive bays. Once must admit this leaves more than plenty of storage options, more than enough for daily usage. However storage hoes have to look elsewhere... to provide clearance for bottom ventilation one can position the HDD cage on the the removable front bracket. More on the latter on the next page. The below snippit tells the tale:

The 3.5" in trays are tool-less if you install an identical sized storage platter; the smaller sized 2.5 inch drives need to secured by using tiny screws. Standard procedure for a modern case, though the sheer number of possible 2.5" drives means the IN WIN engineers are placing their bets on the SSD market.

The 3mm tampered glass plates are held firmly in position by four affixed thumbscrews for easy installation and removal.

The front panel includes (depending on the version) either two USB 3.0 and two 2.0 ports or like with our test sample two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port and a type-C USB 3.1 port. Then of course the standard in and out audio jacks,  two small LEDs for Power and HDD activity top it all off. Too bad no Reset button is present.

A Closer Look Contd.

Cooling wise the In Win 805 remains loyal to the standards of many mid-towers: up to two optional 120/140mm front fans can be mounted. In Win includes one white led rear 120 mm fan to expel the heat. Installation of any top fan requires modding skills, though the space is really limited. When one sacrifices or re-positions the HDD cage up to two 120mm fans can be mounted on the bottom, even though I've been questioning the use of this particular ventilation method it seems to be still used by many vendors.

For those that want to upgrade the In Win 805 with a watercooled DIY or AIO cooler one has the option to mount up to a 280mm radiator in the front and/or one 120mm in the rear part of the case. The IN WIN engineers have included a clever solution to quickly remove the front ventilation by using an easy removable front bracket. Just loosen the two thumbscrews and the entire front cooling system can be cleaned/removed. Too bad there are no routing holes foreseen for the cables of the fans if one opts to install the fans in the front of the removable bracket like we did during our assembly.

The PSU is positioned in the bottom part of the case, weirdly enough no anti-vibration dampers to support the power supply. Note that the fan of the power supply needs to be in upward position, otherwise the ventilation will be minimalistic.

The bottom dust filter sports small magnets for a solid re-positioning time after time. No sliding mechanism required, thus easily removable.

The In Win 805 rests on four increased strengthened case stands with rubber shock-proof inserts.

The Build

The Madshrimps hardware comprises of the following parts:

  • ASUS Rampage IV Extreme X79 mainboard
  • Intel i7-3960X OC'ed at 4.5Ghz 1.37Vcore
  • Corsair Hydro110i cooling
  • 32GB CORSAIR 2400C10 RAMs
  • 1 x AMD 7970HD graphics card
  • 2 x Western Digital 1TB Caviar Green Hard Drives
  • 1 x HyperX  120GB SSD
  • Corsair AX1200 Power Supply.

The build was pretty straightforward, though instead of mounting the Corsair radiator in the proposed way we opted to install the two 140 fans at the front of the the removable bracket. The radiator was mounted on the other side to ensure correct air flow. The cable routing an co was besides the two front fan cables a smooth ride. Like stated before the cable management with these paronamic, see-through cases is a must.

On the back of the motherboard panel there is plenty of space to tuck way them excessive cables. Take note we assembled the In Win 805 in under 30 minutes so yes it looks like a quick and dirty assembly :)

The two cut-outs at the aft part of the HDD cage are well positioned and the right dimension to pass the SATA  and power cables; again one of them little details of this In Win 805 case.

Conclusion

From the first moment we spotted these new IN WIN cases at the Computex 2015 show in Taipei we already knew these cases would stand out from the designs of the other represented vendors. The used tempered glass plates make this IN WIN 805 so gracious that one would feel the urge to clean them each day or straight from the moment one touched and left stains on the glass.

But there is more to this case than just the looks or design. The build quality is superb and has become one of the trade marks for IN WIN. The aluminum structure already reveals this is a high class design; the room for storage is more than most users will ever need, even though take note that the IN WIN engineers are betting heavily on 2.5" devices. The HDD cage can be positioned in 3 different manners to enhance or upgrade the airflow. Talking about airflow, the provision for up to four additional fans is present. A pity IN WIN only opted to include a single LED fan. At least a second front fan would be more than welcome for those that are not watercooling their setups.

Assembly was as mentioned on the previous page pretty straightforward thanks to the numerous spacious cut-outs and this case has no problem with large oversized motherboards nor graphics cards. Biggest issue for most future owners will be the price tag these 805 cases carry: a retail price of 165 euros is something to think about. Though the build quality, used components and superb design will probably persuade many to buy this awesome looking case. We have been taking this case to a few OC demos and this case is really a show stopper. People adore the sleek lines and the ability to show off the internal components. The White IN WIN logo and LED fan just add that little touch of class.

Especially for the design and used components we at Madshrimps happily award the IN WIN 805 the Novelty award. If there is one case to remember from 2015 it probably has to be this one. It is what we consider as utter hardware pron. Okay it sports a beefy price tag but this case is all worth it. In Win has delivered a stunning case with the 805 series and we are already looking forward to what they will show us in 2016.
