Accompanied by the “lighter” Tournament Edition Mamba, the fully-fledged version also includes a battery to help with its wireless function and an adjustable click force mechanism for the left and right click buttons. The new Mamba version has been also included with the Chroma series so an insane number of configuration possibilities are available for its LED lighting system; the charging dock is not left alone, itself having LED lights under it for a nice effect when it sits on the table. Razer has included with the latest Mamba and Mamba TE versions a 16000DPI 5G laser sensor which is very accurate and can be configured with a polling rate up to 1000Hz.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Razer for offering us a sample of their Mamba Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

About Razer:

"Razer is more than just the world's leading brand in gaming.

We were founded in 1998 in San Diego, California by our CEO Min-Liang Tan and our President Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff in a tiny shared office with a couple other gamers. We have grown today to hundreds of employees worldwide with offices in seven cities, including San Francisco, Hamburg, Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore.

Our vision from the very beginning was to be the world's greatest gaming brand and we've set out to achieve that by designing the best gaming products that any gamer has ever seen.

We believe that truly great products are based on technology, designed with extensive human factors and user ergonomic studies and then tested by the top professional gamers. In simpler terms, our own world class scientists and engineers develop cutting edge technology in-house or with partners, design phenomenal products around core technologies – and test the hell out of them in the field with our pro-gamers before we launch them.

We are the only gaming hardware company in the world with dedicated gaming user interface research and development labs, and our technology and designs are incubated in three dedicated design centers located in facilities in California, Singapore and Shenzhen. No other company boasts of technology like we do – because we're the only guys who have what it takes under the hood.

We tell it like it is: some can pretend to co-develop products with professional gamers, but gamers don't develop technology: scientists and engineers do (and ours just happen to be gamers as well).

We develop and design our products in our own labs and then put them to the test with top professional gamers who use them in pro-level tournaments and then provide us with feedback. Then we iterate on the product, refining it with the feedback – over and over and over again. That's how it's done, that's how a Razer product is built from ground up. No marketing BS and no hype.

We pioneered the eSports movement with the world's first $100K tournament back in 2000 and we have continued to give back to the community by sponsoring top eSports athletes who give back to Razer by beta-testing our products. We remain one of the largest sponsors of eSports community sponsoring top global eSports teams worldwide.

The people that work here at Razer are gamers just like you – some amateur, some ex-professional gamers, some just play for fun, just ask our CEO who will lay the smack down on you in Quake Live or our President, who has over ten level 80's on his local server. Hell, he will even take you on a raid in the middle of the work day.

We are the same gamers who are told by the suits that we need adult supervision and we need a professional CEO or management team – and we're the same gamers who tell the suits exactly where to shove it because we like doing what we do – and we do it on our own terms.

We hope our passion for gaming speaks to you like it does to us, through our products and we hope you enjoy the competitive edge we bring to your game."

Product Features, Specifications

Razer Chroma

The Mamba also takes part now of the Chroma series and this means a very high level of customization regarding the LED lighting system.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Since its introduction in February 2009, the Mamba mouse has been reincarnated multiple times and it is time to take a look at its latest iteration, which gathers some of the goodies Razer has previously introduced on other products like the Chroma lighting, the race-car like frontal metallic grills as we have seen with Ouroboros and Taipan and more. The product is shipped inside a medium-sized cardboard box, with the iconic theme Razer employs for some time now:

On the box sides, Razer is detailing the main product features of the Mamba 2015:

The main product components can be checked on the back side of the box, along with the charger module:

The box opens up like a book in order to reveal a detailed product description; we will be also able to spot an additional container, in which the mouse along with the bundle are stored:

As some other select manufacturers, Razer has a very good attention to detail regarding product packaging:

After lifting the top cover of the internal enclosure, we will end up with the document which welcomes us to the Razer Club:

By removing it, we will uncover the documentation, along with the main product itself:

A Closer Look Part II

Under the documentation we will have the rest of the bundle:

Razer places at the disposal of the user one Quick Installation Guide, but also one more elaborated guide:

As the rest of the bundle, we would like to mention the charging dock, one high-quality braided USB/charge cable but also a 2 mm Hex Bit:

We can use the included 2.1m USB cable with the supplied dock or directly connected to the mouse:

The USB connector end has a customized plastic body shape while the other micro-B end was designed for easier removal:

Now we get to talk a bit about the charging dock, which is made of plastic and features two electrical contacts on top, gold plated for good conductivity:

On the bottom we have a large rubber foot which follows the square shape of the dock; the outer area has a transparent plastic frame and multicolored LEDs which look really great when the Chroma feature is enabled:

A Closer Look Part III

As we have said before, Mamba went through multiple iterations and this one is the 2015 version; unlike the TE (tournament edition) model, this one is fully wireless, with an integrated battery which adds to the overall weight of the product. It is comfortable to be used during long gaming sessions or other activities, even with the cable attached to it since the USB cable build is not as stiff as we have seen with other models:

In the back area we will be able to see a subtle black Razer logo:

Mamba is a product only for right handers so the extra buttons are placed only on the left side of the mouse; while most of the mouse body is made of black plastic with a matte texture, the sides also come with a rubberized layer which are meant to help with the grip:

On the sides we will be also able to see the wavy LED lighting lines, which bring extra eye-candy to the product:

If we look closer on the frontal area, we will observe the DPI switcher buttons along with the rubberized scroll wheel which can be also moved left or right for additional actions:

If we switch the mouse on the other side, we will get to see the PTFE feet on the sides, the special shape on the lower side in order to accommodate the charger, the golden battery contacts, one On/Off button, the incredible 16000 DPI rating sensor (Razer 5G) but also two screws which can be used for altering the left and right click buttons actuation force (minimum being 45g and maximum 95g):

We have 15 different steps we can work with:

In the frontal area of the mouse we will get to see the USB connector, which can be used for working with the mouse while charging the battery:

The race car design in the front can be also seen better from the next snapshot:

A Closer Look Part IV

As we have mentioned before, the charging dock has its own dedicated lighting system, which creates a nice effect when sit on the table; thanks to the Chroma capabilities, it can also link to the LED light effects we would set on the Mamba:

Another interesting feature we have observed is the fact that the left and right wavy lines from the Mamba are acting as battery level indicators while charging on the dock so the percentage will be indicated by a pulsating effect:

The customization level thanks to the Chroma features is incredible, but photos don’t bring the product justice:

The Software GUI Part I

If we have a previously installed Razer device on our system which operates with Synapse 2.0, we won’t need to do anything regarding installation, since the mouse will be detected in a snap, drivers will install automatically for it and the new GUI will appear with a selector in order to be able to switch between devices. The interface for the Mamba 2015 mouse is split upon three different main menus which are Mouse, Macros and Stats. From the Mouse area we will be able to go to the Customize sub-section for adjusting the buttons functionality:

After clicking on one of the buttons, a new window will appear in order to allow us to select a specific function:

Here is the list of functions we can assign to each button:

Keyboard Function

Mouse Function

Sensitivity

Macro Function

Launch Program

The Software GUI Part II

Multimedia

Windows 8 Charms

Windows Shortcuts

We can also disable the desired button completely:

Moving on to the Performance section, we will get options to adjust the Sensitivity, Configure Sensitivity Stages, adjust the Acceleration or set the Polling Rate (up to 1000Hz):

The Sensitivity Stages area opens up in a new window:

The Lighting menu section is pretty complex and allows us to set a predefined Effect, apply the chosen effects to all other connected Chroma devices, modify the behavior of the dock lighting, but also set the Brightness levels when in both modes:

Here are the pre-defined modes we can choose from:

The Software GUI Part III

Brightness levels

Chroma Configurator brings LED lighting effects to a new level, by allowing us to work with each small light segment on the sides in order to personalize Mamba to our liking:

The Calibration menu will allow the mouse to better “understand” the surface it will work on so we have options to select one of the Razer mats and if we are working with other type of surface we can enter the calibration mode. Here we can also choose the Liftoff Range:

The Power menu allows us to adjust some Wireless Power Mode Saving Options like Sleep Mode or we can choose at which percentage the scroll wheel should blink (with red color), signaling the fact that the battery should be recharged; the battery LED indication can be also customized:

The Macro main menu allows us to set custom key recordings for a specific button and here we can record with preset delays, with the normal delays or discard the delays between presses completely:

The Stats and Heatmaps section will be able to record the statistics depending on the games we do play:

Conclusive Thoughts

As we have seen with other Razer products, the manufacturer does not skip any steps regarding product quality, even if the price goes to premium levels; thanks to the comfortable shape, we could use the mouse for testing many hours in a row and the top plastic surface won’t wear out easily as on other rubber-coated mice. We have tested the product with many game genres like Star Wars: The Old Republic, FEAR 3, Tales From Borderlands, Quake Live and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood without experiencing unusual behavior on our Windows 10 x64 machine.

The battery life of the product really varies a lot depending on the use of the lighting system, the polling rate setting and so on; if we forget to charge it and the scroll wheel will start blinking red, we can always continue gaming or other activities by plugging the USB cable right into the mouse itself.

The Razer Mamba 2015 edition is quite an investment since it can be found online for about 166 Euros, making it one of the most expensive products on the market from this category; the lighter Tournament Edition version is more accessible though, being available for about 92 Euros.
