SteelSeries Siberia 200 Gaming Headset Review

Others by stefan @ 2016-01-01

After testing the Siberia 200 headset along with the Sound Blaster ZxR while watching movies, some TV shows but also some games, we were happy with the fact that the output is clear, without relying heavily on lower frequencies as some gaming headsets do, while the stereo separation is clearly noticeable, which helps mostly in FPS games. As we have realized from doing some Skype conferences and Mic tests, the quality of it is quite average so if you do a lot of Twitch streaming and want the people on the other end to hear you in pristine conditions, we would like to say that Siberia 650 with noise suppression capabilities should be a better choice.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank SteelSeries for offering the Siberia 200 Gaming Headset for testing and reviewing.

About SteelSeries:

"From day one, SteelSeries has been focused on making high performance gaming gear used by the most demanding, top professional gamers worldwide and peripherals that provide superior quality and a competitive edge to gamers of all skill levels. We believe, as most gamers do, in winning, not trying!

What originally began with two people who recognized the need for superior, high-quality/performance gaming gear that would give gamers a competitive edge, has grown into a global leader in gaming and entertainment gear sought after for their high performance capabilities.

Fast-forward to today, and we’ve come a long way since our first glass mousepad. We have global offices in North America, Europe, and Asia, providing an integrated portfolio of products designed specifically for gaming. Fueling our growth is you, the gamer!

While we are proud of our technology and product innovation, we are even more excited about how these products are developed to meet the needs of gamers. Many companies may claim to develop superior gaming products but few actually do. Instead, they spend countless hours with lab engineers trying to force fit a new technology with bells and whistles and mediocre functionality for the end-user.

At SteelSeries, we develop our products with a small internal team and a vast network of technology partners, channel partners, game publishers, and gaming communities around the globe. We aren’t afraid of being challenged and implementing new ideas. Our main goal is to always to listen to the collective feedback of our professional gaming community.

We won’t bore you with cheeky slogans, trying to underline our authenticity as gamers. We fully acknowledge that the best professional gamers in the world know more about what they want and what will make them better, than we do. We are proud to be working with our partners, but we can’t take credit for their invaluable input and feedback. Instead we tell it like it is: they help us. We want to know what works and what doesn’t. For this reason, SteelSeries creates innovative solutions that provide a competitive advantage for all gamers.

Critical to our company’s success is also our reinvestment in the gaming communities and the individuals who support them. As a result, our corporate philosophy is to take a substantial portion of our revenue and put it back into the gaming community to help spur industry growth. We support our community in numerous ways, ranging from co-hosting tournaments like Iron Lady and King of the Hill, and supporting gaming competitions of all sizes, to promoting the top and up-and-coming gaming teams/organizations.

Put simply, SteelSeries does not claim to invent or reinvent the gaming industry. Nor do we focus on one specific product, copy other companies or follow the crowd.

Instead we leave it to you, the gamer, our customer/partner/inspiration, to decide if we are deserving of such declarations and accolades. What we do promise, however, is to remain committed to you. We will continue to work with you and the gaming community to make the best products possible and give you that competitive edge. We will continue to do our best to support the growth of the professional gaming industry and give back to the gaming communities. By doing so, we don’t just talk a good game, we win!"

Product Features:

A Decade Of Siberia

The Siberia 200's improved headband evenly spreads the weight of the headset over the entire band, unlike competitive headsets that tend to focus a majority of the weight on a single point.

The soft protein-leather earcups on the 200 provide a breathable and comfortable over-ear fit, no matter how intense your gaming gets.

Champions Choose Siberia

When millions are on the line, more pro-gamers rely on the acoustically-tuned, immersive soundscape of the Siberia 200.

Packaging, A Closer Look

SteelSeries have recently launched another headset from the Siberia series, which is baptized as 200, comes in no less than seven colors, is lightweight and marks itself as quite affordable judging by its price. On a first look it does have a resemblance with the white Siberia v2 we have tested quite some time ago and really enjoyed (but that one was USB powered and also had LED lighting on the exterior of the cups). Our sample has arrived in the black color flavor and the packaging does feature the new SteelSeries color scheme:

Some of the product features can be seen listed on the side of the enclosure:

For more details on the product components, we can check the back side:

Let’s see what we do find inside….as a bundle we will get an adapter, but also some documents separately:

SteelSeries did not forget to also include a set of stickers:

The jack adapter is meant to mark the Siberia 200 compatibility with all possible devices:

We will also see inside the headset which is kept fixed inside a transparent plastic mold:

Here is a quick look at the main product; Siberia 200 employs quite a lightweight design and the suspension headband makes a return, thinner than the one we have seen with the v2:

Similarities with the old model can be also seen on the sides, which sport a tiny SS logo:

A Closer Look Contd.

Also, if we take a closer look we will get to see the audio channels marked:

An open soundscape design can be seen when looking at an angle, and this is one of the main differences when comparing with the v2:

While the earpads look thin at first, they do a good job placing themselves around the ear lobe so the comfort is optimal; Siberia 200 comes with 50mm drivers which sport a frequency response of 10 to 28000Hz and sensitivity of 112dB:

With the left cup we will get to see a retractable microphone, which is always on but can be turned off at will with the in-line remote; the microphone is advertised with a frequency response between 50 and 16000Hz, sensitivity of -38dB and impedance of 2200 Ohm:

On the top side of the headband we will get to see another subtle SteelSeries logo:

As we have mentioned before, a small in-line remote is offered for additional functions; one of them is Mic mute:

A Volume rocker is also available on the side:

The 1.8m non-tangle cable has a rubberized texture to it and it ends up with two connectors (one for Mic and one for the headphones):

If needed, the adapter can be attached quite easily:

Conclusive Thoughts

Regarding analog headset quality, we would like to reiterate that the input also plays a strong role so if you have a decent dedicated sound card, DAC or other high-quality Hi-Fi equipment, you should have no issues getting a good result from this set.

Making this headset this light and having available multiple color choices recommends it quite well for LAN parties, the only missing item would be a carry bag. We can also switch do any other devices which support analog output by using the included adapter, something which cannot be done with USB-based versions.

Built as an improvement over v2, the Siberia 200 headset can be found in stores for about 94 Euros.
