Corsair VOID USB Dolby 7.1 Gaming Headset Review

Others by stefan @ 2016-01-07

In order to confirm the headset sound quality versus the VOID Wireless, we have run the same game assortment which contains Triad Wars, GTA V, The Crew, Carmageddon Reincarnation and AION; while the USB revision is not offering the same liberty of movement, we could experience the same high quality gaming-grade sound, thanks to the included 50mm neodymium drivers and good software support from CUE. The microphone quality is also top notch for its size as we have seen from performing several Skype conferences; one of the pluses we do see with this product is the fact that we do not need to care about the battery life anymore and can keep the lighting system always on, at maximum brightness.

Introduction

Product Features, Specifications

Product Features:

Convenient USB interface

You’ll be ready to go with easy one-cable connection.

Don’t pause for sound. See it with InfoMic and CUE Control.

InfoMic brings critical information to the end of your microphone, enabling an instant “heads up” for everything you need to know about in-game audio: EQ settings, Dolby, microphone mute status, and battery life – all visually communicated via the LED indicators next to the microphone.

CUE Control enables rapid re-spec of your audio settings on the fly. The digital dial and push button combo allows quick volume changes and EQ preset swaps, and toggles Dolby 7.1 on or off, all with a single control.

Unrivaled Comfort

Your ears aren’t round, so why buy a headset with round earcups? Our “True Form” shape fits your ears like a glove… for your ears. And when it’s time to embark on marathon gaming sessions, the microfiber-wrapped memory foam ear pads enable extended play.

RGB Lighting under your command with CUE software

Express yourself with 16.8 million color options to match your gear and your individual style. LEDs in each ear cup have fully adjustable power, pattern and color to provide anything from subtle and restrained, to eye-grabbing intensity.

The CUE (Corsair Utility Engine) enables all this, and more. And with CUE Link, your Corsair RGB gaming gear can all work in harmony, whether it’s simply synchronizing your colors, or selecting wave and ripple effects that extend across your keyboard, mouse, and headset.

Epic immersion and true multi-channel audio

Efficient 50mm neodymium drivers create staggering bass, scintillating highs, and towering dynamic range, and genuine Dolby 7.1 surround delivers lethally accurate positional audio.

Noise cancelling microphone

If you’re a team player, you need crystal clear voice communication. The noise-cancelling microphone puts your voice in the spotlight – and nothing else.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

In the last review about the Corsair VOID headset series we will talk about the VOID USB model, which does also sport the RGB moniker, unlike the Stereo variant. The packaging design is exactly the same as we have seen with the Wireless and Stereo designs, with a black/yellow color scheme. We do also get to have a closer look at the earcup design thanks to the transparent plastic window, without the need of unsealing the packaging:

If we check a bit on the box lateral, we will get to see a list of main product features, written in different languages:

The small pictograms we have seen on the top areas are explained if we check the right side of the box:

On the back side, Corsair does explain the main components of the VOID USB:

After removing the top packaging layer, we will get to see the internal enclosure, made from yellow cardboard:

As documentation we are going to receive one Quick Guide, a Warranty Guide but also an Environment Protection leaflet:

The small manual does contain a few instructions we should follow in order to get everything going:

The VOID USB headset does resemble the more expensive brother in all possible ways, even the color scheme being the same:

In order to help with comfort and fit all head shapes, the ear cups can be rotated 90 degrees:

A Closer Look Part II

On the interior of the cups we will find 50mm efficient neodymium drivers with a frequency response between 20Hz and 20kHz, the same model as with the Wireless variant; also the microfiber-wrapped memory foam ear pads make sure to stay comfortable even during longer gaming sessions. What is also to be appreciated is the fact that this material does not pick up lint as easy as with the previous reincarnations of the gaming-grade Corsair headsets:

The right headset cup does not feature extra controls but here we will be able to see the RGB component which is composed of multi-colored LEDs, which are covered by a non-removable black and shiny plastic surface:

For additional durability, we will find a metallic frame which links the cup to the headband:

When looking at the left cup we will remind ourselves again of the Wireless VOID model; here the ON/OFF button is missing, while the Mic Mute button has become larger:

The microphone body is quite flexible and is also fitted with the infoMIC features we did not see with the Stereo variant:

To be more exact, infoMIC is composed from a series of LEDs which signal us the current EQ setting, microphone mute status and the Dolby 7.1 feature:

The advanced volume controller can also act as an EQ setting selector:

Since this is a wired model, we will get to see a non-braided black cable coming out of the left cup:

The top headband padding is quite consistent and does also feature the same material we have seen on the interior of the ear cups:

A Closer Look Part III

Several markings are provided on the exterior of the headband in order to adjust it at the same distance on both sides:

Also nearby we will get to see the company logo:

USB cable is non-removable and features a length of 1.8 meters:

At the end we will get to see a slightly customized USB connector:

Thanks to the RGB feature and CUE (Corsair Utility Engine), we will be able to work with different light effects:

Corsair Utility Engine GUI

The Corsair Utility Engine software is quite modular and if we have another Corsair product on our system using it, it will install the necessary drivers and enable the interface right away; we can switch between the interfaces on the lower side of the GUI. The Audio Tab will help us adjust the levels for both MIC and Sidetone, but also enable the Dolby Surround feature. Also here we will get to see the predefined EQ settings:

The 10-band EQ values can be altered for each profile:

Inside the Lighting tab, we can configure in more detail the InfoMIC feature, but also adjust the brightness, current effect and speed of the selected light effect:

We have a pretty good selection of light effects available via the menu:

The Device menu will show the currently connected devices and strictly regarding VOID USB, we can choose to disable the device lightning entirely, see the firmware version or status of the product. Corsair Utility Engine also permits firmware updates from the same menu:

The Program tab will allow us to customize some of the Corsair Utility Engine options:

Finally, we have the Support tab, for checking various help resources:

Conclusive Thoughts

In order to confirm the headset sound quality versus the VOID Wireless, we have run the same game assortment which contains Triad Wars, GTA V, The Crew, Carmageddon Reincarnation and AION; while the USB revision is not offering the same liberty of movement, we could experience the same high quality gaming-grade sound, thanks to the included 50mm neodymium drivers and good software support from CUE. The microphone quality is also top notch for its size as we have seen from performing several Skype conferences; one of the plusses we do see with this product is the fact that we do not need to care about the battery life anymore and can keep the lighting system always on, at maximum brightness.

The current headset status can be also checked out via the infoMIC LED lighting system and we are quite happy with the new choice of materials Corsair has used for the VOID series, since the microfiber-wrapped memory foam ear pads do not pick up lint as much as earlier models, while keeping the comfort level raised at all times.

Regarding product price, it stays right in the middle, between the Stereo and Wireless model, so we can find it online for about 100 Euros. People which do not need extra liberty of movement can as well save money and go for the USB variant versus the Wireless, since they get about the same benefits.
