Shuttle XPC Slim XS35V5 Pro Barebone Review

All-in-one PC by stefan @ 2016-02-02

Shuttle XPC Slim XS35V5 Pro was designed to be fanless, quiet, reliable for a 24/7 operation and it is not focused on high performance. The N3050 Intel Celeron processor also features Intels’ 8th Gen HD Graphics which supports Full HD video encoding/decoding so the manufacturer is recommending this machine for Office work, media playback (Full HD content) but we would also like to add that the product handles well browsing too if we do not have a big number of tabs open and we do also have at least 4GB of DDR3L SODIMM memory installed inside the supplied slot. Besides the location where we can install the HDD/SSD, we also have the option to mount an internal USB Flash Drive and install and optical drive; with an additional accessory, the optical drive can be also replaced with a secondary 2.5’’ HDD/SSD.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Shuttle Europe for offering a sample of their latest XPC Slim XS35V5 Pro Barebone for testing and reviewing.

Product Features

Multiformat card reader

At last – no more searching for missing digital camera leads. Simply insert the memory card and you can access all stored photos and videos immediately.

Anti-theft protection

The Kensington Lock forms part of the anti-theft system. As with many other Notebooks, this Mini-PC can also be safely locked, ensuring long-term enjoyment from your Shuttle product.

Fan-less external power supply

A highly effective external power supply provides the Shuttle Mini-PC with its energy. And since it works without a fan, it is completely noise-free.

Connections without all those annoying cables

Data is transferred by WLAN completely without cables. Accessing the Internet and local network resources (e.g. printers) is now child's play when within range of an access point/hotspot.

Fanless and whisper-quiet

The fanless technology used in this PC means it is incredibly quiet. Doing away with these mechanical components also reduces the number of wearing parts, making the machine more durable and stable.

Low energy consumption

Thrift is a virtue. In terms of power consumption this Mini-PC sets an example. It is not just good for the environment but for your pocket, too.

Optimal air flow

Warm air is transported out of the chassis by means of cleverly arranged components, which enables a large number of parts to be cooled simultaneously in the air flow. At no time can heat build up and adversely affect the stability of the system.

HDMI interface

Goodbye cable spaghetti! Modern flat-screen TVs and large-format TFT screens can be connected to this Mini-PC with just a single thin cable. Often the audio output is also transferred in brilliant quality via the HDMI cable.

Just 2.5" HDDs

An extremely compact PC housing offers less space for drives, that's why this Mini-PC uses slimline 2.5-inch hard disks. The advantage of this is that there's less noise, less heat generated and reduced power consumption. However small hard disks in a small housing does not have to mean less memory. Modern 2.5" HDDs are every bit as good as their 3.5" brothers.

You can rely on SSD

This is where an energy-saving "Solid State Drive" should be used. This drive technology guarantees extremely short access times, the highest data transmission rates and considerably lower energy consumption compared to conventional hard disks. SSDs have no mechanical components at all, are therefore subject to less wear and tear and consequently benefit from a longer service life.

The fastest connection to external peripheral devices available to date

The USB 3.0 connectors of this model allow for data transfer of up to 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s). This enables external devices such as USB hard disks to be connected and run at nearly the same speed as their internal siblings. USB 3.0 is downward compatible so that also devices of previous USB generations can be hooked up.

Communication in the fast lane

The integrated gigabit LAN chipset opens up completely new possibilities for communication with no restriction on the speed of data transfer. Say goodbye to information bottlenecks, whether in the company network or for home Internet access.

High-resolution DisplayPort

The DisplayPort connector allows for connections with digital high-resolution displays. Besides picture signal, DisplayPort cables can also lead digital sounds signals in excellent quality.

Generous supply of USB ports

You can never have enough of those versatile USB ports. This Shuttle Mini-PC offers 5 ports, with further ports for internal expansions located on the mainboard.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

In this article we will take a look at another mini-PC barebone from Shuttle, which incorporates a dual-core low-power Intel Celeron N3050 processor in order to attain the lowest power consumption possible and is also approved for 24/7 permanent operation if we follow the guidance from Shuttle like free air circulation and the installed HDD must be also approved for permanent operation by its manufacturer. The product is shipped inside a familiar-looking enclosure:

For easy manipulation, we do also get a transparent plastic handle:

If we look on one of the box sides, we will get to see a sticker giving us a run-down of the technical specifications; here there is also a small yellow warning sticker telling us that the product does only work with DDR3L (low power) SODIMM memory modules:

The barebone is protected inside the enclosure with thick white foam, while the accessories are supplied separately within a separate box:

We will also get multi-language installation guides inside a transparent plastic bag:

Speaking of the accessories, let’s look inside the box and see what we’ve got:

Mounting metallic components are supplied for both SSD/HDD and optical drive, then we could remind of some spare rubber replacement adhesives, the installation disk, the metallic dock, one power lead but also the power adapter:

The power adapter is built by Asian Power Devices and can deliver on the output 19V at 2.1A:

The installation guide is very well detailed, with photos and highlights for each step:

With version five, Shuttle has altered quite a bit the side panels of the barebone, which does now have a thin brushed aluminum build, with a plastic frame on the inside; a manufacturer logo is present quite in the middle:

A Closer Look Part II

On the top area the same design remains, with the ventilation grill which is meant to expel the heat:

The bottom area is also supplied with a lot of ventilation areas, through which cold air is meant to be brought in:

If we look in the frontal area, its design is similar to external DVD Writers; this product has though here additional interfaces like an USB 2.0 port and a SD card reader:

The Power button/LED along with the HDD activity LED can be also found in the vicinity:

Plenty of interfaces can be spotted on the back of the XS35V5 Pro:

-DC-IN port

-D-SUB/VGA connector

-DisplayPort connector

-2x USB 2.0 ports

-HDMI connector

-2x USB 3.0 ports

-RJ45 (Gigabit LAN) connector

-Line-out and Microphone input jacks

-Kensington lock port

A perforation for an optical connector is also available near the DC-IN port and the screw to open up the chassis is covered by an adhesive rubber circle:

Here is also a look at the back side of the panel, which exposes the plastic frame:

The first area which gets exposed is the one which contains the cooling system, HDD mounting area, memory slot but let’s get a closer look:

The frontal USB port is located on a separate PCB and linked to the main board via one cable:

We can say a similar situation is available for the card reader; nearby we will get to see the capsulated CMOS battery:

Near the frontal area of the chassis we will get to spot one Wi-Fi antenna:

The SATA Data/Power connector is available for mounting either one 2.5’’ SSD or HDD:

A Closer Look Part III

A W704E1-A1 Wi-Fi adapter is preinstalled, which has at its core the Realtek RTL8188EE chipset:

Near the single memory slot, we will get the same “Caution” message to use only 1.35V DDR3L-rated memory:

Next, we could remind of the ITE IT8728F SuperIO chip which is in charge of monitoring:

The CPU VRM is located near the heatsink:

Speaking of the heatsink, this one has not changed from the previous generation and features a single copper heatpipe:

The manufacturing date along some extra product codes are printed on a sticker:

Let’s turn the product on the other side and see what we have got:

First, we will get to see an internal USB stick for extra storage:

Via additional daughterboards, a slim optical drive can be installed on this side, but if we have also purchased one PHD2N accessory, the optical drive can be replaced with an extra HDD/SSD:

On the larger daughterboard we will be able to spot the Intel WGI211AT Intel Gigabit Ethernet controller:

Near the frontal area of the barebone we will get to see the mounting points of the optical drive:

A Closer Look Part IV

Let’s start with the installation procedure! First we will get the HDD bracket for using our trusty 250GB Hitachi drive:

We can secure it to the drive with the four supplied screws:

In order to keep the drive fixed on the chassis, we will use three additional black screws:

Next, we will mount the 4GB Samsung DDR3L module, which we have also used with the other systems as comparison:

The last component (which is optional to be installed in order to have a fully-functional system) is the optical drive; an extra metallic bracket is offered for it, along with three additional screws:

First two, smaller screws get the bracket fixed onto the drive:

The last one gets the assembly secure onto the chassis:

After re-assembling the chassis with the two lateral panels, we will have to attach the dock so optimal ventilation will be achieved:

On the bottom area of the dock, we will get to see a large sticker, four small rubber feet and the central portion where the mounting screw gets installed; previous revisions were carrying the exact same design:

The product fully assembled should look like this:

Quick Look inside the BIOS

XS35V5 Pro comes with a really simple APTIO BIOS interface, since this product is not designed of gaming or overclocking in any way, but office productivity or light media center applications; inside the Main menu area, we do have information regarding the currently installed BIOS version, the CPU, installed memory but we can also adjust the system date and time:

The Advanced area is split into multiple sub-sections:

-Power Management Configuration

-Hardware Health Configuration

-Onboard Device Configuration

-CPU Configuration

-SATA Configuration

-USB Configuration

The Power Management menu offers us only two options for modifications, others being greyed-out:

The Hardware Health Configuration menu is displaying the current CPU/System temperatures, but also the voltages in different areas:

Onboard Device Configuration menu allows us to enable/disable certain interfaces:

From the CPU Configuration menu, we will get even more details on the installed CPU and from here we can enable/disable C States or Intel V.T.:

SATA Configuration menu is only displaying us the installed drives:

Same thing can be said about the USB Configuration menu:

The Security menu allows us to change the current passwords, enable Flash Write Protection or enable Secure Boot Control:

General Boot options can be located in the next menu:

Finally, we have the Exit menu which allows us to Save/Discard or load factory defaults:

Test Setup and Extra Info

In order to start testing the XS35V5 Pro Barebone from Shuttle, we equipped it with one Samsung 4GB DDR3 1333MHz 1.35V SODIMM memory module, but also a Hitachi Travelstar 5K250 250GB HDD. We installed the latest Windows 7 x64 from scratch and got the tests going. Here is some information that we could obtain on the internal hardware, thanks to the specialized programs:

CPU-Z CPU Information Tab

The Intel HD Graphics (Braswell) is based on the Intel Generation 8 architecture which does support DirectX 11.2 and is also found in the Broadwell series. It features 12 EUs and a clock speed up to 600MHz, simply not powerful enough to handle many game titles. The GPU does also support 4K/H.265 video acceleration.

Temperature tests

To test the computer thermals, we have first left the computer in IDLE for about 30 minutes and then we fired up AIDA64 Stress Test module, for an additional 35 minutes. The minimum and maximum temperatures of all internal components were recorded by the latest HWINFO utility. During the time of testing, the ambient temperature was 14 degrees Celsius:

Power consumption test results

System Full Load measurement was recorded while running the AIDA64 System Stability Test and checking on Stress CPU, Stress FPU, Stress Cache, Stress System Memory, Stress GPUs.

In IDLE, we have recorded a value of 15.47W, while in Full Load about 24.42W which tells us that we are dealing with a very power-efficient system.

Conclusive Thoughts

The chassis lateral panels have been updated and now feature a more professional look; the lack of ventilation holes on the sides does not seem to have an impact on the overall system temperature and even when all components are stressed to their maximum levels, the power consumption will stay in the 24W range, which is ideal for 24/7 operation.

Besides regular Gigabit LAN we do also have a wireless interface preinstalled with a single antenna and multiple peripherals or storage devices can be attached to the product thanks to the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. We do also have support of displaying on three monitors at once and on the HDMI port we could output 4K without issues but only at 30Hz.
