Silicon Power Mobile C80 Dual Flash Drive for Type-C Ready Mobile Devices Review

Other by stefan @ 2016-02-18

Mobile C80 USB Flash Drive from Silicon Power is incorporating the Type C connector for compatibility with the latest mobile devices on the market, but also features the regular Type-A USB 3.0 port on the opposite side for general purpose. While the read speeds hover around 130MB/s when transferring large files, the writes hover around 11MB/s which should be enough when saving a backup of our photo collection from our newly-purchased smartphone.

Packaging, A Closer Look

One of the latest USB Flash Drives from Silicon Power which is named Mobile C80 wants to take one step further by incorporating the Type-C connector, often found in latest generation mobile devices. Of course, for general compatibility we also have one standard USB Type-A port available on the opposite side, but let’s take a closer look at the packaging and the product itself. Mobile C80 is shipped inside a simple cardboard slim enclosure, with a layer of transparent plastic so we can see how the product does really look like without unsealing it:

Some more details regarding the product can be seen on the back side of the packaging:

Mobile C80 was designed to be quite compact and with a 360 swivel cap for easy access of the interface we need at a specific moment; the total storage capacity is also written on top, along with the debossed Silicon Power emblem:

The drive itself is considerably smaller, the top plastic layer helping us to attach the product easily to a key chain:

Here is also a look at the product when the USB Type-A port is revealed:

The Silicon Power Mobile C80 Flash Drive has arrived formatted FAT32:

To determine the flash drive read speeds, the HD Tune v5 utility was used; the read speeds are quite good with this particular model, while the writes are decent (when transferring data from mobile devices) as well for the 16GB variant:

Summary Graph (Read Performance)

To measure the real life performance, we have used the Total Commander application to copy to the flash drive and from the flash drive the same file and recorded the transfer speeds, after they have stabilized.

Silicon Power Utility

The helper utility from Silicon Power has been updated to a new version featuring Windows 10 support, which seems to also mean a complete reskin. The menu placement is pretty much the same though and there we will find Project Backup, Data Encryption, My Favorite Backup and so on; the lower area of the interface shows how much space we have left:

From the Project Backup tab, we can define new backup tasks to be saved onto the drive:

Data Encryption tab is pretty self-explanatory:

The favorite websites from different web browsers can be saved to the drive from the next menu:

The files can be also classified in different predefined folders:

We can also work with online cloud storage:

From the Storage Device Information menu, we can check out the current status of the drive:

The last two menus are Download Norton which will redirect us to a trial version but also Language Choose from where we can select the language of the GUI:

Conclusive Thoughts

Mobile C80 USB Flash Drive from Silicon Power is incorporating the Type C connector for compatibility with the latest mobile devices on the market, but also features the regular Type-A USB 3.0 port on the opposite side for general purpose. While the read speeds hover around 130MB/s when transferring large files, the writes hover around 11MB/s which should be enough when saving a backup of our photo collection from our newly-purchased smartphone.

Mobile C80 has been also designed to be as compact as possible and is easy to be attached to our keychain.

While the model we had in our test labs was the one featuring the smallest 16GB capacity, the product is also available in 32GB and 64GB versions.

The 16GB variant is available online for about 16 Euros, the 32GB for about 22 Euros and the highest capacity 64GB variant can be had for about 33 Euros.
