Corsair VOID Surround Gaming Headset Review

Others by stefan @ 2016-02-22

VOID Surround does retain the overall look of its older brothers, but at the same time tries to combine the benefits of the USB and stereo headsets in one: the mobile-compatible connector was designed to work with PS4, Xbox One and other mobile devices like smartphones or tablets; we do not need to worry if we have a poor CODEC on our PC since Corsair does include a compact USB sound card which is also able to provide genuine Dolby Surround effects.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Corsair has launched the VOID headset generation not long ago and it incorporated three different models: the wireless (high-end model), one USB model which also sported RGB lighting as the wireless variant, but also a simpler stereo model. The manufacturer gave it a thought and came up to the conclusion that this is not enough, so another model was created which mixes the benefits from both stereo and USB models and is now baptized VOID Surround. Let’s get in a bit more detail by presenting the packaging, which is similar to the one we have found with the VOID Wireless and not USB or stereo variants. We will get to see some of the main product features via small icons but also through written text:

The pictograms we have just seen on the front are explained by looking at the laterals:

If we do look on the back side of the box, we will learn that this model is compatible with a larger range of devices:

After removing the outer packaging layer, we will end up with a similar enclosure as with the other models, which keeps the headset secure during transport:

As documentation, we are getting one Quick Start Guide, a Warranty Guide but also an Environment Protection leaflet:

Right after we free up the headset from the packaging, we will observe some additional plastic protections in order to avoid scratches; since this is marketed as a hybrid headset, at first we thought that we were missing a component inside the box:

Actually, Corsair did hide the adapter inside the right cup to save space and also made sure that it won’t move during transit:

The magic component we are talking about is practically a small external sound card, similar to what we have found with the latest SteelSeries Prism headsets and also allows Dolby Surround to be enabled when using the CUE software; when this function is active, a white LED light will light up on the adapter:

A Closer Look Part II

While on one of the sides the adapter does come with the USB interface, the other houses a microphone/headset combo 3.5mm jack for connecting the VOID Surround:

On the back of the sound card we will observe a small sticker with the product code name and serial number:

VOID Surround follows the design lines of the previously tested models from the same series:

While VOID Wireless was offered in two different color variants, the USB and the stereo one were all-black; Surround comes with a nice red/black color combination which should fit with many other gaming laptops or desktop setups out there:

The right cup features on the exterior a grey Corsair logo, on a shiny black plastic finish:

The left cup comes with a similar styling, only that here we do also have the microphone Mute button and, of course, the microphone itself:

While the microphone does have a similar design with its older brothers, we have found its body a bit angled near the tip, which provides a better placement near the mouth area:

We are dealing with a unidirectional noise cancelling mic model which does have an impedance of 2.2k Ohms, a frequency response between 100Hz and 10KHz, while the sensitivity is -37 dB (± 3 dB):

A Closer Look Part III

The ear cups come with microfiber-wrapped memory foam ear pads on the inside so the comfort levels remain elevated even during lengthy gaming sessions:

As the previous models, we are dealing with the same efficient 50mm neodymium drivers which are able to deliver enough bass, mids and highs which recommend them for both gaming and movies/music listening:

Near the USB wire we can spot the volume adjustment wheel:

Thick memory foam is also available on the inside of the headband:

Speaking of the headband again, we will get to see a large grey Corsair logo on the top area:

The headset is fully adjustable to fit any head size or shape; indicators are available on each side so we can make similar adjustments on both sides:

On the inside of the headband we will be able to see the markings of the channels:

The VOID Surround jack plug is gold plated and features a customized design:

Time to connect it to the provided sound card see what we have got!

Corsair Utility Engine

Installation of the software is pretty straight forward; since it is unified, we will be also able to see the other compatible devices listed on the bottom area. Since this model does not have RGB lighting available, we only do get the Audio tab listed, from where we can adjust Mic levels and Sidetone, enable the Dolby Surround feature, but also work with one of the pre-defined EQ profiles:

Need more customization? Corsair Utility Engine can surely provide it for you so the user can modify the EQ on 10 bands for each profile:

One other option we have available inside the Settings main menu and to be more exact the Device tab, where we can “activate sound notifications”; the device firmware can be also updated from here:

With the latest version of the CUE, we do get some additional standard lighting modes for compatible RGB keyboard models as the STRAFE RGB. We are talking about VOID Playback Visualizer and also the VOID Microphone Visualizer:

These two profiles practically transform your keyboard into an equalizer, which enables itself automatically when sound is played via one compatible VOID headset or when we talk via the microphone:

Conclusive Thoughts

VOID Surround does retain the overall look of its older brothers, but at the same time tries to combine the benefits of the USB and stereo headsets in one: the mobile-compatible connector was designed to work with PS4, Xbox One and other mobile devices like smartphones or tablets; we do not need to worry if we have a poor CODEC on our PC since Corsair does include a compact USB sound card which is also able to provide genuine Dolby Surround effects.

By using the included sound card, we do also have more customization modes available via Corsair Utility Engine which include different preset EQ settings, custom EQ modes and thanks to the latest software version we can also transform our RGB-compatible Corsair keyboard into a visual Equalizer, which is pretty cool!

VOID Surround does feature the same high-quality 50mm neodymium drivers which were also available with the previously tested models so we have got a similar listening experience as with the USB and Wireless variants. While testing the headset in a one-hour conference via Skype, we were heard by the other parties loud and clear, which proves the quality of the included microphone

The only negative point with this model is that Corsair did not include an adapter in order to connect the headset directly to our sound card via separate mic/headset jack ports.

Corsair Europe has already communicated that this specific model will be available for about 89.90 Euros, which we think that it is fair for what we have in store.
