Fnatic Gear Flick Optical Mouse and Boost Control Mouse Pad Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2016-04-04

Not long ago, we have had Func Inc, a gaming peripheral from Sweden and even tested some peripherals from them: MS-3 Gaming Mouse, Surface 1030 XL pad and the MS-2 model. After Fnatic team has tested most of the peripherals brands products on the market, they have decided that Func has a lot of potential and have acquired it; from here Fnatic Gear was born and in this article we will explore the new products from the company, which were built based on the past experience in this field.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Fnatic Gear for sending out their Flick Optical Gaming Mouse along with the Boost Control Hard Mouse Pad for testing and reviewing.

About Fnatic Gear:

“Quality is everything. We've made the Fnatic Gear products to the highest quality standards, built so they perform and stand the test of time. If at any point in our manufacturing process we feel the products might not meet our exacting standards we will not release it. Simple as that.

But for us, this is just the beginning. We're in this for the long run. 100% of revenue from all our initial products will go back into the the development and distribution of new amazing gear to share with you and our players in 2016.

After acquiring the Swedish brand Func, we’ve been working closely with our acquired development team building and refining our initial products. We wanted to make sure we released with a range of products good enough for our players, and therefore good enough for you. Now, we’re ready to show off all four products, the all new Flick, the refined Rush keyboard and the range of mouse pads.”

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Not long ago, we have had Func Inc, a gaming peripheral from Sweden and even tested some peripherals from them: MS-3 Gaming Mouse, Surface 1030 XL pad and the MS-2 model. After Fnatic team has tested most of the peripherals brands products on the market, they have decided that Func has a lot of potential and have acquired it; from here Fnatic Gear was born and in this article we will explore the new products from the company, which were built based on the past experience in this field.

The Flick Optical Mouse “G1” is shipped inside a medium-sized cardboard enclosure, which shows a photo with the product in operation:

The top layer opens up like a book in order to show the tech specs in more detail than any other product of this type tested so far:

We will be able to take a look at the main product highlights if we look on the back side of the enclosure:

What will we receive inside the box? Well, besides the main Flick mouse with a 2m fully-braided cable and gold-plated USB connector, a Quick Guide is also supplied to the end-user:

Here we will get to see the initial pre-programmed functions of the mouse interfaces, along with the LED areas:

Flick G1 does have the shape of an ambidextrous mouse but with programmable buttons only on the left side; it is fully covered by a black smooth rubber coating which adds quite a bit of grip and overall we are dealing with an ergonomic shape which should fit most hand sizes. A circular button is available near the scroll wheel which does have an initial mapping of profile switching:

Here is a closer look at the mouse top rubber coating by looking at its back side area:

Some design elements of the Func MS-2 have been brought to the Flick and these include the design of the lateral buttons:

A Closer Look Part II

Also, where the Func logo was printed now we do have the Fnatic Gear logo:

The right side of the mouse sports same characteristics regarding the shape but this time no extra interfaces are available:

A Flick product logo can be also observed near the front:

The mouse scroll wheel also has a rubber coating on top, while the semi-transparent plastic underneath is LED-lighted:

What can be found on the bottom of the Flick? Well, first we can see some tiny PTFE feet in each corner, while the ADNS 2120 central lens cover the ADNS 3310 optical sensor which we have also found with the Avior 7000 mouse from Mionix; if we have started the discussion about technical specs, we would also like to remind that the Flick does have at its core the Holtek HT68FB560 MCU 8-bit microcontroller which does also supply 256K of memory for storing profile settings directly to the mouse. We can also remind the users that the Flick comes with a resolution of 5000 CPI and a tracking speed of 130 IPS for a total of 6500 frames per second. As we have seen with many other gaming mice, the polling rate can be adjusted up to 1000Hz:

Right after connecting the mouse to a spare USB port, the scroll wheel along with the profile LEDs with light up; we have seen these design elements at the Func MS-2 too:

Besides the Flick G1, we have also received the Boost G1 Control mouse pad (L size) to try along with the mouse; the product is shipped inside a cardboard slim enclosure which is also fully sealed:

On the top area of the packaging, the manufacturer has placed a photo of the pad design, along with the size we are getting; in our case, the L-sized pad is 340x260mm:

On the back side we will get to see some of the product main characteristics:

A Closer Look Part III

The pad is held secure inside:

On the inside of the top cover we will find the OURTIME hashtag which does represent the launch of the new Fnatic Gear products (on 17 November 2015):

The pad is made from a hard polycarbonate and since it was designed for control, we do also have a somewhat grippy texture to it; in the lower right corner we will find the Fnatic Gear logo:

The bottom area of the product does come with a textured rubber layer, so the pad won’t move on the surface we place it on:

Here is a close-up of the rubber surface:

A feature we did really enjoy with this pad (besides the top texture which does not create a loud sound when the mouse is quickly moved on the surface) is its thickness: only 2mm:

Let’s take the products for a spin and see what we’ve got!

The Software Interface

What we did like about Func before was the fact that they do create interfaces which are really pleasant to the eye, functional and easy to set up; it was quite logic that these features were transferred to Flick G1 so after downloading the utility from the website we will get to see the firmware version on top along with the software version and a bit lower we will find the profile selector along with Backup and Restore buttons. The main menus are:

Basic Settings

Button Assignments

Color Settings

Macro Recorder

The Basic Settings area does allow us to adjust CPI settings on three different levels, the pointer sensitivity, the scroll speed and also the double click speed. We do also have the option to select if we should perform scrolls by page and also adjust the polling rate (up to 1000Hz):

The Button Assignments menu presents itself with a photo of the mouse and its main interfaces and on the left side we can perform the modifications:

Here are the categories of the functions we can assign to the buttons:

Mouse Functions

Fnatic Gear Functions

Multimedia Functions

Office Functions

Windows Functions

Color Settings menu brings a bit of eye candy to the mouse and from here we can adjust scroll wheel LEDs with a number of different preset effects; we do also have a custom mode available, a color cycle option and more:

Here is the list of preset LED effects we can choose from:

Macro Recorder is included with most gaming mice and this area is really simple to work with; we can simply define a macro, record it and then save; if we want the macro deleted, we can always click on the “bin” tiny icon for each defined one:

Flick G1 LED Light Examples

Since only photos don’t really do the product justice, we have also recorded a small video with the possible LED light effects:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

We have tested the Flick G1 in office work where it performed as it should on default settings without jumps or other erratic movement; changing the profile with the top button is quite handy in the situations when we need more DPI on larger screens or multi-monitor setups. We have then fired some games like Grim Dawn, LoL, Ghost in the Shell and Mad Max; since we have tested before mice with the Avago ADNS 3310 we kind of knew from the beginning what to expect and this mouse did not fail to impress us at all. Thanks to the rubberized surface, the mouse is easy to hold even during longer gaming sessions (at LoL for example) but the downside is that skin oils can deposit on this layer, which in some cases is harder to clean up.

The LED lighting system is quite similar to the one we have seen along with the Func MS-2 but this time we have some effects added to it. We can say the same thing about the Macro Editor, the Profile selector along with the backup/restore system of the settings.

Regarding the Boost Control mouse pad we could say that we really enjoyed its low thickness, while the hard polycarbonate surface performed in very good conditions on both our Flick G1 sample, but also our Razer Mamba mouse (after calibration). While our Control model was designed for more precision, there is also a Speed variant available for fast action gameplay.

While during our testing we haven’t experienced issues, some users report on the forums that this model has some current problems with LOD, but the manufacturer has already mentioned in some Twitter postings that an update to either the mouse firmware or the software (or both) will fix this problem too in the near future.

The Fnatic Flick Optical Mouse is available online for about 56 Euros, while the Boost Control pad can be purchased for about 21 Euros, which we find quite right for the features we are getting.
