InFocus M560 Smartphone Review

Smart Phones by stefan @ 2016-05-03

By featuring the low-powered MT6753 octa-core mainstream SoC, InFocus M560 can deliver enough performance for most applications, while maintaining a very good battery life. Unlike other smartphones in the same segment, the M560 model is equipped with a high-quality FHD screen, a gorgeous unibody back chassis, one 13MP camera which is able to take good photos and the 2GB of RAM gives it the ability of running more applications at once. Manufactured and designed by Foxconn, we also get a very good build quality and thanks to the dual trays we can have installed two nanoSIMs and a microSDHC card for extended storage at the same time.

Product Specifications

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Thanks to GearBest, we have finally got in our test lab the InFocus M560 smartphones which promises a lot when judging by its technical specifications, this at a very low sale price! We will however see how it performs in this review in more detail and a comparison with previously tested models is also in order. The product is shipped inside an all-white cardboard box, which features a chromed InFocus logo:

On the bottom area of the box, we will get to see the technical specifications, including 4G supported bands (TDD-LTE support is available so this is very good news for some specific operators in Europe which operate on these frequencies); here we will learn and confirm what we told you guys in the introductory press release that this product was manufactured and designed by FIH Mobile = Hon Hai Precision = Foxconn:

The product we have received was re-sealed by GearBest which means that the products they do sell are carefully inspected before they are sent out (a very good thing):

After lifting the top cover, we will be able to spot a small document along with the M560 itself, wrapped inside a semi-transparent plastic layer:

The document we have mentioned earlier acts as a guide for people which are not familiar with Android OSes or smartphones in general:

As accessories we will receive an additional envelope, the USB data/charge cable but also a power adapter:

The envelope does contain the pin for SIM tray removal, but also a Quick Start Guide; there is no screen protector supplied in here:

A Closer Look Part II

Despite the fact that the sample was supplied from the EU Warehouse of GearBest, we are getting a power adapter with US design, which means that we need to purchase an additional adapter for European compatibility:

The power adapter comes with the C5010-C08N code name and is rated on the output 5V at 1A:

On the top of the power adapter we will get to see the USB port:

It is now time to check out the main point of attraction: the M560 smartphone!

Unlike the previous smartphones we have tested from the low-end to mainstream area, this one comes with a FHD display, 5.2 inch and rounded chassis edges:

On the top area of the screen we have the speaker, the 5MP selfie camera, the light sensor, the proximity sensor but also a very handy notification (multi-colored) LED which comes in handy on all situations:

The bottom screen area does have a central InFocus logo which does not offer additional functionality to the smartphone, since it is not a capacitive button there and all Android function buttons are on-screen:

This one is also one of the very few smartphones we have received for testing which does feature a metallic back and boy….the quality of the overall built is very…very good. The plastic delimitation can be spotted in the corners for the antennas and the left area does have the Power and Volume rocker (which are well assembled and do not rattle):

A Closer Look Part III

The bottom area of the unit comes with a central USB port while the laterals have the microphone and loudspeaker grills:

M560 does not come with only one tray but two so we are getting the best from both worlds: we can use two SIM cards and a microSDHC at the same time, while keeping the smartphone chassis very slim (7.6mm):

One small detail we have spotted regarding the trays is the fact that they are not of the same color and we really cannot figure out why Foxconn has gone with this design:

On the top area of the chassis we do only have the headphone jack available:

If we do look on the back side of the terminal we will get to see the full-metallic back in champagne color; Foxconn has also used here a removable sticker with the product serial numbers, IMEIs and some additional details:

On the top area we do have the 13MP camera lens, the LED flash, another microphone port, all placed on a matte black plastic layer:

Here is also a closer look on the bottom area:

By using the supplied tool, we can easily remove the trays; the top one in the photo is available for housing a microSDHC-type card, while the bottom one can house one or two nanoSIM cards:

The Android GUI Part I

InFocus M560 does come with a custom launcher and the default Android buttons are available on-screen as we have mentioned before; there is no application drawer so all newly installed applications will appear on the desktop multiple pages, where we can also create folders. By default, we also have a folder which will be populated with the frequently used applications:

While most of the Google applications are stored in a single folder, we do get to see the next batch of installed applications on the second page:

The third preset page does have a calendar widget available, along with two additional folders:

Alright then, let’s begin! First we do have Google Play Store, which is the place to go for installing tons of

free or paid games or applications:

My Music is a beefed-up Music application integrated in the current firmware which is in charge of playback audio files and also comes with online services attached:

Gallery is the stock MTK application for viewing photos but with a slight GUI redesign:

Here are the Google applications pre-installed with this ROM:

First we have the Google application which features its cards and facilitates the search activity:

Google Chrome is also available with the InFocus M560 ROM:

Gmail becomes operational right after we log in with our Google account, but we can also add other accounts to be checked simultaneously:

The Android GUI Part II

Google Maps is a good companion outside when we need to choose a navigation route or simply check out the surroundings:

YouTube comes in handy when browsing or searching for different videos:

Next we do have Google Drive:

Google Play Music offers us access to the online music services:

Google Hangouts can be used for chatting with different friends which do use this service:

Google Photos allows us to backup our shots on the web for easy access later:

Play Books does allow us to purchase online books for later read:

Play Games is the area where we can track our game achievements and install other games which support this service:

The service for executing voice commands is also available:

Another stock Android application which has been slightly re-skinned is Dialer, which also comes with the Contacts tab. Besides the actual stock settings, we were happy to see that the recording feature is integrated and can be turned on at will:

The Android GUI Part III

The SMS messaging application is also slightly modified to fit in with the rest of the interface:

We can say the same about the Email application:

While a good part of the smartphone manufacturers is throwing in the default Camera MTK application, Foxconn has reskinned it and also added some additional modes:

By clicking on the small gear icon, we will be able to work with different settings for both photos and video shooting:

Here are the modes available for shooting:

Next we have the Clock application which does not need an introduction:

The Android GUI Part IV

The included Weather Forecast application seemed to detect the current location in a snap and does display the forecast in an easy-to-read format:

The FM Radio function is also included with this smartphone, only that we need a headset connected for it to work properly:

Voice Notes can be also recorded in a snap (a skinned version of the Recorder application):

Downloads is the usual shortcut to the Download folder which resides on the internal storage:

Calculator is another re-skinned application:

Torch is very easy to use and features a large central button which can be pressed right away:

Notes can be also saved in text form:

The File Manager has been also revamped for easy access of the internal and external storage:

SIM Toolkit can be used for changing the current IMSI:

Backup & Restore MTK program makes an appearance with a more pleasing GUI:

Traffic can be controlled with the included App Traffic Control when enabled:

The Android GUI Part V

A usage optimization application also comes with this ROM, but can be uninstalled if not needed:

Two other different programs come pre-installed with this ROM, also which can be fully uninstalled:

The menu key can open up the Task Manager and if we click on the Clear All button, all currently running applications will be cleared out from the memory, one-by-one:

Next we do have the Settings menu available; it is not a surprise that Foxconn has chosen to full-revamp it for a nicer appearance:

From the WLAN menu, we can check out the nearby networks and connect to them given we have the correct credentials:

Bluetooth allows connecting to different peripherals or other gadgets which do support the technology:

The Android GUI Part VI

Data Usage will show the current data consumption on both Mobile and WLAN interfaces:

Tethering & Portable hotspot is the place to go when sharing the Internet connection with other devices:

Cellular Network Settings menu allows us to enable Data Roaming, choose the Preferred Networks/Type and so on:

SIM Cards menu is the place to go in order to delegate different services to each SIM card:

Airplane & More menu allows us to enable Airplane Mode but also here we have the Cast Screen option, VPN and more:

Apps menu is the stock variant we have seen on all other MTK ROMs:

Next we do have the Display menu, which allows us to alter the brightness levels, enable the Bluelight Filter, adjust both Home screen and Lock screen wallpapers, Font size and more:

Sound area is also customized and allows us to alter many sound volumes separately, which is very handy, choose the phone ringtones per each SIM and also more:

The Android GUI Part VII

Battery menu comes with the stock option (MTK) to enable the “Standby intelligent power saving” feature, display the battery percentage on the top bar but also see the applications which consume the most battery resources:

Storage menu allows us to select the default write disk, gives us an insight on the remaining free space on the internal storage but also of the external storage devices when connected:

Motion features are also available with the M560 in a separate menu:

Some extra configuration options for the default applications can be configured next:

Apps Cleaner allows us to clear some of the applications from the background process after 30 seconds in order to conserve battery life:

Screen Lock option is placed separately in order to offer some additional configuration options:

Next we have the Notification menu:

GPS functionality can be set from the next menu:

The Android GUI Part VIII

The usual Security options are available from the said section:

Accounts can be added from the respective menu:

Backup & Reset menu is the place to go when we would like to reset the smartphone to its factory settings:

OTA software updates can be checked out from a dedicated menu:

Date & Time menu really needs no introduction:

Language & Input is the area where we can adjust the language of the interface, enable the spell checker, define a separate keyboard (installable from Play Store) and also more:

About Phone menu gives us an insight of the current smartphone operating status, gives us the model number (the smartphone is detected as the M808, which is the same only that it features 32GB of internal storage instead of 16GB), installed Android version, security patch level, baseband versions and so on:

The Accessibility menu comes with some other different sub-menus which we can work with:

Test Setup and Test Results Part I

The InFocus M560 smartphone is incorporating the MT6753 64-bit octa-core WorldMode 4G LTE SoC clocked at 1.3GHz meant for the affordable mainstream market and the GPU-side inside is Mali-T720. MT6753 does also feature dual-band 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 along with a 16MP image signal-processor; 1080p Full HD video recording and playback can be done at 30fps.Besides that we do also get 2GB of RAM and a total of 16GB of internal storage.

The Device tab informs us on the supported screen resolution, manufacturer, screen density, total RAM and usage but also total internal storage and usage:

The System tab will supply us more information regarding the board type, Android version, kernel, resolution, free memory and so on:

The Battery tab will show the current status; the battery sensor is working properly on this model:

The new Thermal tab will update us with the live temperatures in different areas:

The application also shows live data from the available sensors:

To test out the performances of the InFocus M560 smartphone in more detail, we have installed some freeware benchmark apps from the Google Play Store in the internal memory (did not transfer them to a 3rd party microSDHC card, in order not to influence the test results). Afterwards, the applications were ran one-by-one, and we recorded the final scores; the obtained results were also compared with the previously tested systems, in order to spot the performance differences.

While the back camera sensor is not disclosed by the manufacturer in terms of model and part number, we found out that it can take color-accurate and sharp photos even in lower light conditions, which makes it ideal for taking shots meant for sharing on the social networks.

Of course, you can always check out the full-resolution, unaltered versions at this LINK.

Screen Viewing Angles

The InFocus M560 5.2'' FHD screen offers crisp details and non-altered colors or blurry text even when viewed from different angles:

Conclusive Thoughts

As we have seen with the latest MTK SoCs, these are very power-efficient and can deliver a good battery life even when paired with sub-3000mAh batteries (in this case we are dealing with a 2450mAh rechargeable battery). This statement is backed up by the test results we have obtained via the AnTuTu battery test utility.

The GPS capabilities are also very good, satellites are locked in in a couple of seconds and GLONASS is fully supported.

Another aspect we did enjoy about this particular smartphone was the software: besides the fact that it was stable with each and every application we have installed on it, we have seen that Foxconn has had time to redesign and re-skin each and every MTK SDK application to make it less dull, unlike many other manufacturers; given the price of the device, this is a big plus in our book too.

Now let’s talk about the weirder, unexplained aspects: the manufacturer did not see fit to include a screen protector, not even one we could fit one ourselves. Secondary, we need to search for a protective case elsewhere, since it is not included in the original package.

The InFocus M560 4G smartphone can be currently found out at GearBest for about $104.99.
