After quite a lengthy development process, the Raiden series from AVEXIR has been launched, a product which reminds us of the Raiden character of Mortal Kombat which was able to shoot lightning out its hands in order to electrocute its opponents. These modules are a bit more peaceful :) , sporting plasma tubes in a blue color, which bring an unique effect to any gaming/overclocking or regular build.

Packaging, A Closer Look

Our long-time friends at AVEXIR have recently sent us a kit from their most interesting memory series at the moment: Raiden. The Raiden is not your run-of-the-mill kit with fancy LEDs placed on top in order to create a regular lighting effect but integrates plasma tubes for mimicking a continuous lightning effect. This type of effect was not obtained easily and required quite some time of research in order to perfect the design. Let’s take a closer look! The product is shipped inside a custom-made cardboard enclosure, featuring the product logo on top:

 

 

 

On the back side, AVEXIR makes sure to give us an in-depth description about the product, along with an authenticity sticker and a QR code (for checking out more service/warranty information):

 

 

 

The Raiden memory modules are packed inside two-by-two, in transparent plastic mold:

 

 

 

Besides this type of protection, AVEXIR has also included golden finger protectors for each of the modules, to prevent oxidizing (which will ultimately lead to errors in tests or unbootable systems if not cleaned properly):

 

 

 

The Raiden modules are considerably taller versus most of the memory modules out there, which may pose some clearance issues when used with air coolers and this is why we strongly recommend going with AIO water cooling for the processor this time; besides the signature white/blue color, they also come with red and black accents (Red Tesla, ROG optimized), but also green as it could be seen at Computex 2016:

 

 

 

The reason for the tall module is basically because the plasma tubes require extra electronic components in order to operate; on top the Raiden Tube Type I gets mounted and further down we do have the Raiden logical IC along with the Raiden energy source. It is also useful to mention that each module is featuring a 10-layer PCB for maximum thermal conduction, double copper PCB for increasing overclocking abilities, while ever single memory IC is examined by AVEXIR IC Sorting Technology for ensuring that it works as intended when operating at the pre-programmed XMP timings, speed and voltage:

On the opposite side we will be able to spot a similar design, but with an authenticity sticker which also informs us on the memory total quantity, rated speed, CAS latency, voltage and memory code name:

 

 

 

The top area houses the plasma tube, which is extra protected by a black plastic layer on the sides:

 

 

 

A check at the module from the lateral does show that it is a bit thicker than other modules because of the highly-elaborated design (0.9cm):

 

 

 

After installing the modules on our test system, the magic begins since the tubes get lighted up right away:

 

 

 

When we do turn off the lights, the effect is even more pronounced and the LED lighting system will make your system stand out from the LED crowd:

The pre-programmed timings and frequencies can be also found by using AIDA64:

 

 

After powering up the system, we loaded the default XMP profile of this RAM kit which set the timings at 15-15-15-35, with the speed at 2666MHz, while the modules were running at 1.2V. To make sure everything is in order, we also did run Memtest86 (four instances, 2GB RAM each) and no errors were thrown out. We then clocked the RAM higher, at 2700 MHz while using the 15-15-15-36 timings and the stability tests passed fine; 2800MHz with 16-16-16-37 was next and finally we went for 2900MHz which we could stabilize at 17-17-17-39 and using the same 1.2V:

 

 

We could not do 2933MHz by either raising the voltage or altering the timings further, but we think that 2900MHz is a decent overclock versus the stock speed.

Conclusive Thoughts

After quite a lengthy development process, the Raiden series from AVEXIR has been launched, a product which reminds us of the Raiden character of Mortal Kombat which was able to shoot lightning out its hands in order to electrocute its opponents. These modules are a bit more peaceful :) , sporting plasma tubes in a blue color, which bring an unique effect to any gaming/overclocking or regular build.

 

Besides the lightning effect, the modules are equipped with XMP profiles and while our model was designed to run at 2666MHz, C15 and 1.2V, we have succeeded to improve its performance by relaxing the timings a bit up to 2900MHz, this without even touching the stock voltage.

 

Before making your pick, make sure that the motherboard you are having does come with support for these modules: we have tried two BIOSTAR motherboards, the Z170X Gaming and Z170GT7 and they were not able to keep the modules stable after enabling XMP, but it was only possible to operate at stock 2133MHz frequencies. What we found strange was the fact that the modules were operating well at XMP when we had only two of the four modules installed so yeah, guess BIOS support must be a bit improved for those two motherboard models. A second issue we have had with the BIOSTAR C7Z170-OCE, where the manufacturer has placed the two slots near the CPU sockets too close together, so we could not install the kit properly. Gigabyte Z170X-SoC Force worked like a charm though, with both XMP profile and also in overclocked mode.

 

The AVEXIR Raiden 2666MHz C15 32GB kit MSRP is $265 ,a bit expensive for the mainstream segment but if you’d like to have an unique build in order to show to your friends, this should be the ultimate product in this category.
