Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 2400MHz 32GB White Memory Kit Review

Memory by stefan @ 2016-08-04

The Crucial Ballistix Sport LT White 2400MHz memory kit is not the fastest out there, but the 32GB memory quantity should suffice for many high-end PC configurations, for running demanding games, multimedia content or even digital content production. Their unique white-PCB look fits right in when we need to build an all-white setup and the Micron chips also give a bit of overclocking headroom.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Crucial for sending a sample of their Ballistix Sport LT 2400MHz 32GB White Memory Kit for testing and reviewing.

Make your system go Ballistix

Memory is fun when it's faster, when it's stylish, and when it helps your system perform at a higher level. Compared to standard Crucial DDR4 memory, that's exactly what Ballistix Sport is engineered to do. Get faster speeds and run demanding applications with ease. Multitask at will with increased bandwidth. And strike first with better latencies and reduced load times.

Install with ease

Getting more out of your system should be easy — and that's exactly how we engineered Ballistix Sport memory. Using cutting-edge technology, intuitive module design, Intel® XMP 2.0 profiles and more, we designed Ballistix Sport with the sole intent of creating affordable, easy-to-use performance memory. Installation is a cinch: just plug-and-play, and get ready to win with little to no BIOS configuration.

Go covert

With a stealth digital camo design and integrated heat spreader, Ballistix Sport LT is designed to be your memory lieutenant. Keep your system cool and collected while mowing down the opposition—whether that's a challenging spreadsheet or an opponent you've just reduced to a bloody pulp.

Micron® quality—a higher level of reliability

As a brand of Micron, one of the largest memory manufacturers in the world, Ballistix memory is built to last and delivers a higher level of performance than standard memory. Packaging, A Closer Look

The last memory kit we have tested comes from Crucial and takes part of their Ballistix Sport LT series; while this SKU does not concentrate at high performance (since it is rated at 2400MHz), it provides a unique style in order to fit with custom builds. The product is shipped inside a transparent plastic enclosure so we can take a look at the modules without opening it up:

A metallic-grey sticker is present on the enclosure which shows the memory specifications in more detail:

Crucial also gives a more detailed explanation of their PC memory series on the back side:

After lifting the top packaging cover, we will get to see that the RAM sits properly inside a custom plastic mold:

The cardboard which can be found inside gives us information regarding the installation procedure:

In the case of the Ballistix Sport DDR4 kit we have tested, the white heatsink shares the color with the PCB, which makes it ideal when we do also have a motherboard with white PCB, a white PCB video card, all paired with an all-white computer case; however, we have seen that these modules look really good in other color schemes as well:

The Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4 LT memory kit also features a low-height heatspreader in order to be compatible with large CPU heatsinks while the camo design is present on both sides:

A Closer Look Contd.

Here is a closer look at the heatsink which shows the manufacturers’ attention to detail:

The opposite side of the memory module does hold a similar design, with the exception of some stickers:

The sticker on the left does hold the product serial number:

The one on the right presents us the product code name, the fact that it is XMP (v 2.0) compatible, running frequency, CAS timings but also the operating voltage:

A look on the top area of the module shows how thin the modules are:

Let’s install the modules on our Gigabyte Z170X-SoC Force and get the tests going!

CPU Cooler: Antec Kuhler 620

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170X-SoC Force

RAM: Currently tested kit

Power Supply: Cooler Master 850W

SSD: OCZ Vector 150

Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840

The pre-programmed timings and frequencies can be also found by using AIDA64. Micron RAM chips are confirmed:

After powering up the system, we loaded the default XMP profile of this RAM kit which set the timings at 16-16-16-39, with the speed at 2400MHz, while the modules ran at 1.2V. To make sure everything is in order, we also did run Memtest86 (four instances, 2GB RAM each) and no errors were thrown out. We then clocked the RAM higher, at 2500 MHz while keeping the timings the same along with the voltage; since we have received errors in Memtest86, we have decided to increase the timings and succeeded to obtain full stability.

2600MHz was not possible with our sample even when we have tried it at 1.35V. Here is the validation at 2500MHz too:

Starting with the JEDEC 2133MHz, we did benchmark the RAM step-by-step up to 2500MHz, in order for you to spot the performance differences.

Conclusive Thoughts

The Crucial Ballistix Sport LT White 2400MHz memory kit is not the fastest out there, but the 32GB memory quantity should suffice for many high-end PC configurations, for running demanding games, multimedia content or even digital content production. Their unique white-PCB look fits right in when we need to build an all-white setup and the Micron chips also give a bit of overclocking headroom.

Thanks to the low-height heatsink, the Ballistix Sport LT memory kit is compatible even with larger CPU heatsinks, while the embedded XMP 2.0 profile makes it compatible with the latest motherboards on the market.

By using lower-speed memory chips, the manufacturer has succeeded to make this 32GB kit more affordable for the general public, so we could find this product in stores for about 141 Euros.
