Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

In this review we will take a look a bit on a mouse product, built by the well-known CHERRY manufacturer which supplies the MX switches for many other brands. This is a wireless model and was not thought as a high-end product, but mostly for the mainstream segment and sports incredible battery life. The product ships in a small box as we have seen with several OEM mice, nothing fancy at all:

The back side of the box does list the main product functions, box contents but also supported operating systems, in multiple languages:

Let’s open up the box and check it out:

Besides the main product, we will also receive two AA batteries and, of course, an Installation Guide:

The manual does have some important usage details, but also lists the area from where we can download software for it:

The supplied batteries are manufactured by GP and have a capacity of 2200mAh; this allows a service life of about 733 hours, assuming the mouse will be used constantly for one hour a day and 230 word days a year, a single battery change will be needed in three years.

A Closer Look Part II

CHERRY has designed a simple but comfortable shape for its MW 2310 model, identical on both sides, so we can say that it is optimized for both left-handed and right-handed operation:

Near the chrome plated, rubberized scroll wheel, we do have the DPI selector with its own two buttons (placed where the + and – signs reside), and we can switch between 1000/1500 and 2000 DPI values:

On the left side we do have a rest area for the thumb but also two programmable buttons, which are easy accessible:

The right side comes with the same design, but no programmable buttons are visible this time:

In the frontal area of the mouse, more precisely near the scroll wheel we also have an activity LED which will light up during the connection procedure but also when the DPI selector is accessed:

On the bottom area of the mouse we do have PTFE feet in all corners, which do make the mouse move smoothly on the surface we will use it on; there is also a small compartment where the Nano USB receiver sits, in order to have the product ready to move around or for traveling purposes; a large battery compartment can be also spotted in the middle:

A Closer Look Part III

The battery operation can be turned on or off via the switch and nearby we do also have the sensor lens:

On the attached sticker we do get to see the product code name, serial number but also the power rating:

After the removal of the battery compartment cover, we will get to see where the batteries get installed; what is interesting about this model is that it can actually function with a single battery so it is our preference if we do use one or two batteries at a time. This way we can also adjust the mouse weight to our liking:

The Nano USB receiver is also quite slim, ideal to be installed on ultrabooks, convertibles and kept connected even when our gadgets are inside the luggage during travel:

On the top area of the receiver we get to see another CHERRY logo:

The Software Utility

If we do pay attention to the written instructions, we will learn that additional software can be downloaded from the CHERRY website; this one is named KeyMan and works with both their mouse and keyboard series. For the mouse, we can assign quite a bit of functions like Run a specific program, Open a file/folder, Open a webpage, access System Management and more:

By accessing the Configuration tab, we can Import/Export the software configuration, Restore the default assignments and also some other actions:

The Options area does allow for even more configuration options:

Conclusive Thoughts

The CHERRY MW 2310 was clearly not thought for high-end gamers, but occasional gaming and plenty of office work is fully doable; we get an infrared sensor which resolution up to 2000 DPI, wireless 2.4GHz technology, incredible battery life, the possibility to use the product with only one battery at a time, symmetrical design for ambidextrous usage but also two programmable buttons via the supplied software.

While the mouse does have an On-Off switch on its bottom layer, the product is also entering energy-saving mode if it is not moved for 0.2 seconds, and it is being able to wake up really quickly since we did not detect any lags while using it for office work.

We did really like that the manufacturer has went with standard AA-type batteries and not something proprietary, so when the initial ones are depleted, we can easily go to a store and purchase an affordable replacement for many more hours of usage.

This mainstream product does come with a low-end mouse price of just about 12.7 Euros, making it affordable for anyone out there.
