KFA2 GeForce GTX 1060 OC 6GB Video Card Review

VGA Reviews by stefan @ 2016-10-03

The GTX 1060 OC video card from KFA2 features a very solid build, while the cooling system succeeds to keep the GPU at low temperatures on high loads. In DirectX11, the card does trade punches with the RX480 and wins most of the time! Surprisingly, in DirectX12 the RX480 from AMD gains a small advantage but considering the low number of DX12 titles nowadays, we think currently this card is a better buy.

KFA2 surprises us once again with the pricing of the reviewed model; the 6GB version of the GTX 1060 OC is available for just about 259 Euros -> this makes it clearly the cheapest dual-fan custom cooled card on the market, which is also pre-overclocked from the factory.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

This article will focus upon another video card from KFA2, but this time sporting the third consumer GPU from the Pascal architecture, GP106, sporting a total of 4400 million transistors. After the launch of the RX480 from AMD, Nvidia did not have anything available in that price segment, so the GTX 1060 launch was somehow accelerated. Based on the same 16nm FinFET process, it comes with 1280 enabled shaders (half of the ones present on the 1080), 48 ROPs and the TMUs are available in a number of 80.

While with the GP104 (GTX 1070) we did see a 256-bit memory bus width, this time it has been cut to 192-bit, but the 6GB of GDDR5 memory is still operating at the same frequency of 2002MHz.

The KFA2 GeForce GTX 1060 OC comes with a mild overclock, the GPU being clocked at 1519MHz, while the memory having the same 2002MHz speed as the OEM variant.

The product does ship inside a medium-sized cardboard enclosure, carrying the KFA2 signature styling; here we will also learn that we are working with a pre-overclocked model, the 6GB variant (yes, there is a 3GB variant too available on the market), is powered by a 6-pin PCI-E connector and supports the PCI-E 3.0 version. As the GTX 1070 EX OC, the GTX 1060 OC is marketed as a VR Ready product:

On the side of the box, the manufacturer has included the product key features, along with the minimum system requirements:

Some of the main product highlights can be checked out on the back, along with the list of box contents:

After removing the top packaging layer, we will end up with another plain, black cardboard enclosure:

The card along with its bundle are located here, along with lots of foam material so the internals won’t be damaged during transit:

As documentation, we are getting a User Manual, one disk with the necessary drivers but also the User Manual in electronic format, and finally one Quick Start Guide:

Before the actual installation, if the user is not familiar with such PC components, it would be recommended to check out both guides:

A Closer Look Part II

As an extra bundle component, we are also receiving a PCI-E 6-pin to dual MOLEX adapter, for configurations which have older power supplies:

The GTX 1060 OC video card is also wrapped inside an anti-static bag:

With this variant, KFA2 has opted for a less complicated cooling design, adapted for a smaller TDP. The top shroud is made of plastic but has a premium look, while the two 80mm fans are able to keep the heatsink cool during high loads:

Each fan does have nine blades and unlike the EX OC variant we have tested before (GTX 1070), there are no LEDs present:

Here are some card views from the sides, where it can be seen how the shroud along with the inner aluminum core get combined:

The card requires power from a single PCI-E 6-pin power connector:

The back side of the PCB does no longer feature a backplate and in order to remove the top cooling system we need to remove the spring-loaded screws around the GPU, but also the two ones in the VRM area:

As outputs, the KFA2 GeForce GTX 1060 OC does come equipped with a DisplayPort 1.4, one HDMI 2.0b but also a Dual Link DVI-D:

A Closer Look Part III

Versus the original OEM card, the GeForce GTX 1060 OC custom PCB from KFA2 has the GDDR5 and VRM placement switched and overall we are dealing with a longer PCB:

In the bottom left corner we will be able to spot the 4-pin connector which supplies power to both PWM fans:

The six GDDR5 memory ICs are manufactured by SAMSUNG and sport the K4G80325FB-HC25 product ID; these can be also found fitted on GTX 1070, RX 480 cards and more. These are specified to run at 2000MHz (8000MHz GDDR5 effective):

The VRM has a 3+1 layout, one for the memory and three for the GPU:

The PWM controller is an uP9509, from uPI Semiconductor Corp:

Some measuring points can be also spotted with this model:

The heatsink includes two heat-pipes which do help with heat evacuation; it has been a while since we have last seen direct heat-pipe contact design on a VGA cooler…:

With the help of the GPU-Z utility, we could extract lots of information regarding the video card clocks, memory type, pixel and texture fill rate and so on:

To receive more in-depth information regarding the GPU, we have used the AIDA64 utility:

Temperature tests:

For finding out the temperatures in both IDLE and Full Load with the fan set on Auto, we left the computer IDLE for about 25 minutes and then started monitoring with HWINFO64 and logged the values obtained while running Heaven 4.0 at the 1920x1080 resolution for an additional 17 minutes, with details at Maximum and Tesselation set to Extreme. During this time, the ambient temperature was held steady at 26.5 degrees Celsius:

Noise measurements

Before measuring out the noise the video card was producing, we have first measured the noise inside the room the tests took place and we found out it was 29.3 dBA (with everything turned off).

At all times, the sound meter was placed 20cm near the video card.

The GPU fan was controlled by the latest version of the KFA2 Xtreme Tuner Plus utility:

As it can be seen from the test results, the fans are able to keep the card super cool in 2D mode, while in 3D the card barely reaches 73 degrees Celsius, with the fans rotating at about 1822RPM, which means a noise level lower than 35.8 dBA.

Xtreme Tuner Plus

KFA2 comes with its own tuning utility, the Xtreme Tuner Plus; this program does come with a friendly and easy to use GUI, which displays the most important card details on the top area like clocks, temperatures and fan speeds. The utility opens up by default with the Overclock tab, where we can adjust the GPU/Memory clock speeds, the Power/Temperature targets (which can be also linked), we can set a frame rate target but also adjust the current fan speeds:

1-Click OC is the area to go to for loading some pre-defined profiles; these overclock the card to a certain point, but we can also the silent profile when performing non-intensive tasks:

Voltage settings can be also modified from a separate tab:

Lighting mode is not available on this model and KFA2 saw fit to disable the tab entirely in order not to create confusion; a very good decision in our books!

Conclusive Thoughts

The GTX 1060 OC video card from KFA2 features a very solid build, while the cooling system succeeds to keep the GPU at low temperatures on high loads. In DirectX11, the card does trade punches with the RX480 and wins most of the time! Surprisingly, in DirectX12 the RX480 from AMD gains a small advantage but considering the low number of DX12 titles nowadays, we think currently this card is a better buy.

As the GTX 1070 variants we have tested so far, the GTX 1060 is also marketed as a VR Ready product, so let’s test it out with the SteamVR Benchmark utility:

The card has obtained a rating of 7.3, which integrates in the VR Ready segment of the benchmark; the RX480 is close, but has a lower score of 7.1.

Most of us will agree that the OC variant of the card does come with only a mild overclock from the factory; with the supplied overclocking utility, we have succeeded to increase the GPU clock to 1744MHz, while the memory clock was raised to 2115MHz. After this tweak, we have got a healthy score increase in 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark:

Unlike the GTX 1070 models, this card model does not feature the fan-stop feature, so the fans will continue to rotate in 2D too; this is not necessary a bad thing because the fans are silent and the card will have low temperatures even when simply browsing the web.

KFA2 surprises us once again with the pricing of the reviewed model; the 6GB version of the GTX 1060 OC is available for just about 259 Euros -> this makes it clearly the cheapest dual-fan custom cooled card on the market, which is also pre-overclocked from the factory.
