Packaging, A Closer Look

Cougar is another established competitor on the gaming peripheral market, which is insanely competitive at the moment. Besides the usual gaming mice, keyboards and headsets, Cougar does also manufacture PC cases, power supplies, cooling fans but also offer custom accessories as mouse pads, metallic keycaps for their mechanical keyboards, mouse bungees; they are also present now in the gaming chair field in order to compete with other manufacturers as AKRacing, DXRacer, Arozzi and so on. The first product we are going to look at from their new series is the Revenger gaming mouse, which comes with a powerful sensor, RGB lighting, a comfortable shape and more; the product is shipped inside a small cardboard enclosure, which does show the product in operation on the top cover, along with a list of the main highlights:

On one of the box sides, we will get to see some more details on the product:

The list of specifications is also available on the opposite side:

This is not all! A more detailed product review is available on the back, along with more explanations, in multiple languages:

The enclosure opens up like a book, in order to offer a clear view of the product, along with a description:

Our sample has shipped with zero accessories, but the retail packaging should contain a set of Cougar stickers, but also one User Manual:

Revenger does come with a shape more down-to-earth, and not as futuristic as the 700M model we have tried out in 2014; since it is longer a bit versus the Rival 700 from SteelSeries, we could successfully use it with a palm grip, while the top dark-grey cover does not become slippery during prolonged use. OMRON switches are being used for extended durability of the left/right buttons:

On the mouse rear area, we get to see a LED-lighted Cougar logo, along with an additional LED curved band:

A Closer Look Contd.

On the left side panel, the mouse does feature a rubberized layer, two extra programmable buttons which are easy accessible, but also three LED lights for signaling the current DPI setting:

The right side panel is coming with a similar rubber textured layer, but no additional interfaces can be spotted:

Near the mouse scroll wheel, we can spot a Trigger button which does come with a different actuation mode (it must be pressed inwards). The new usage mode of this particular button is easy to get used with:

The frontal mouse wheel is quite large, does feature an interesting design and it does not rattle during usage:

If we take a look on the bottom area of the Revenger mouse, we will get to see large bottom PTFE feet, but also the central sensor lens. This model is equipped with one of the most acclaimed sensors, PMW 3360 with a configurable DPI up to 12000. The high DPI settings are great for usage on high-resolution displays or multi-display setups:

Cougar did not equip this mouse with a braided USB cable, but only has a thin rubber layer; its length is 1.8m, enough for most applications:

The custom USB connector is gold-plated, to ensure optimal contact:

Right after we have connected the mouse to a spare USB port, the LED lighting started up:

Cougar UIX System Part I

As we have seen with other manufacturers, Cougar has its own available unified software system, which helps customizing the connected peripherals even further. UIX has detected the mouse right away and has made available its custom GUI for us. We can personalize and save three different profiles to the mouse, while each profile is available to switch between three DPI steps. The main Performance area does allow the user to change the DPI step values, choose a value for the Sniper mode, enable “Independent X-Y axis” adjustment, adjust the Polling Rate, enable Angle Snapping, the Lift Height, Double Click Speed, Scroll Speed but also the Windows Pointer Speed:

The profile manager opens up in a window of its own:

The next tab allows us to modify the button functionality; the work environment is similar to the one we have experienced along MadCatz gaming mice:

We have the Basic and Advanced functions available for us to choose from:

Basic

Advanced

From the Advanced functions area, we can select one of the following categories:

DPI Switch you have already seen, so we will continue with the Sniper category:

Cougar UIX System Part II

Media Function

Macro area allows the user to create Macro Groups and for each group we can record new Macros:

The Macros are recorded in a separate window:

The Lighting Control area allows the user to configure both RGB LED areas independently; we can choose from different modes like Breathing, Static and so on, but we did really enjoy the color cycling mode best which is set by default, which switches colors in waves, from left to right:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

For testing this mouse, we have run Mafia III, Paladins, Tom Clancy: The Division, DOOM and Devilian; the mouse tracked wonderfully on our ModMyMachine aluminum pad, but also directly on the table surface. We found the DPI switcher easy to work with as set by default, and the mouse remained comfortable even during longer gaming sessions such as Devilian leveling in dungeons for two hours and a half in just one go.

We do really appreciate the fact that Cougar did not use rubber coating on the top cover, which usually picks up lint and skin oils more frequently than on regular plastic finishes. The textured rubber layer on the sides is very helpful though for additional grip and the DPI LED lights are easy to spot during operation.

The Cougar UIX unified software allows the user to customize the buttons with many other different functions, but also work with the LED lighting system or fine-tune the PMW 3360 sensor performance.

Cougar Revenger is available online for about 55.9 Euros at CaseKing.de.
