In this article we will concentrate our attention on another affordable headset, this time from Cougar and to be more exact their stereo model IMMERSA. The product is featuring 40mm Neodymium drivers, huge 100mm ear-pads covered with leatherette, a retractable microphone but also an overall lightweight design.

The product does ship inside a medium-sized cardboard enclosure with a plastic window and enumerates the main product highlights in the frontal area; Cougar does also tell the user that this product can be used without the need of drivers which is quite self-explanatory since we are dealing with a Stereo and not USB version:

 

 

 

On one of the box sides, the manufacturer is detailing a bit the product features which have been just listed in front:

 

 

 

 

Also, on the window side we will get a list of compatible devices (basically any device can be used if it can output audio on analog jack):

 

 

 

On the back side of the box, Cougar does show the main product components:

 

 

 

After removing the IMMERSA from its packaging, we will get to see that it does also ship with a small installation guide:

 

 

IMMERSA does feature an orange/black color scheme, while the large ear cups can be spotted right away:

 

 

On the exterior of each cup we will observe a dark grey metallic grill along with an inner orange ring. The ear cup can be adjusted to a certain degree in order to fit all head shapes and sizes, while the chromed Cougar logo adds to the overall styling of the headset:

 

 

Each cup does hold a 40mm Neodymium driver and thanks to the thick padding the headset IMMERSA will remain comfortable even after long gaming sessions or watching multimedia content:

 

 

Another padded leatherette element is the headband, which automatically adjusts each time we use the product:

 

 

 

The top side of the headband is carrying the manufacturer logo in orange color:

 

 

On the laterals of the headset, we will also get to see markings of the left and right channels, so we would wear the product in a correct manner:

 

 

The left cup is also holding the retractable microphone:

 

 

Its body is enough flexible so we were able to bend it in the desired position. It is also equipped with noise cancelling technology for filtering background noise, so the conversations can be performed in optimal conditions:

 

 

The headset cable is braided and we are also offered an in-line remote; one of its functions is volume control:

 

 

The other side comes with a microphone mute switch:

 

 

The headset can be used right away with combo jacks which carry signals for both microphone and headphone:

 

 

For more compatibility, we are also offered a braided 4-pole splitter which allows connection to PC sound cards or other systems which require this type of connection:

 

 

We did start testing the IMMERSA by connecting it to our Creative Sound Blaster ZxR and playing several music videos from YouTube. Right away, we have noticed that the drivers were specifically tuned for lower frequencies so expect more bass from the start versus the Siberia 800/840 series from SteelSeries. Since most sound cards feature the ability to work with the EQ, we could easily adjust it to get optimal results for listening to music and/or movies, TV shows.

Since the headset was built for gaming, we did reset the EQ again to its default values and ran DOOM but also Battlefield and Batman Arhkam Knight: we did really enjoy the sound of the explosions, bullet firing and the rest of the shooter-specific sound effects.

 

The retractable microphone was easy to work with and we could be heard clearly on the other side via Skype conference, while playing Black Desert for over two hours.

 

IMMERSA is compatible amongst a large range of devices thanks to the supplied 4-pole splitter, offered inside the packaging, free of charge.
