Corsair has recently upgraded the Scimitar series with the PRO RGB models, which feature a 16000 DPI PMW3367 optical sensor, onboard profile storage and comes in two different color schemes. The RGB lighting can be configured in four different areas, the twelve side button assembly can slide inside the chassis in order to be easy accessible, while the product is fully supported by the CUE 2 software, which allows powerful customization and integration with other RGB Corsair Gaming peripherals.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

From the last Corsair mice lineup, we did really miss out testing the Scimitar RGB mouse, which was designed for MMO but also MOBA gamers thanks to its high number of programmable keys, as we have also seen with the ROCCAT Nyth. Scimitar has made a return in the form of the PRO RGB version and as improvements, we could remind of the new native 16000 DPI PMW3367 optical sensor developed in a partnership with PIXART, but also the added onboard profile storage.

The product is shipped inside a compact cardboard enclosure, which does sport the usual Corsair Gaming color scheme and on the front cover we can spot some of its main highlights:

Some of the product main features are explained on one of the box sides:

The list of package contents is available in multiple languages:

The location of the programmable buttons is highlighted on the back side of the box, while we do also get a small product description from a professional WoW player:

The top cover of the box also opens up like a book, in order to reveal more details on the product:

As a bundle, the Scimitar PRO RGB mouse also receives a thumb hex key, a Warranty Guide leaflet but also the Quick Start Guide:

The Guide explains in detail the product components, along with the steps we must take in order to start using the Scimitar PRO RGB mouse:

A Closer Look Part II

Scimitar PRO RGB shares the design lines with the previous version and packs a 1.8m braided cable, which should be enough in most applications:

The shape of the mouse allowed us to use it with a comfortable palm grip during testing, while the top layer is covered by a thin rubber coating, which feels quite nice:

The curved back of the Scimitar PRO RGB does include a Corsair Gaming logo, which sports RGB lighting:

On the left side of the chassis we can observe no less than twelve programmable mechanical buttons, which have a custom design so they will be identified with ease while gaming, without the need to actually look at the physical interface. This key arrangement can be moved forwards or backwards as needed, by using the provided hex key in order to fit all grip types:

While the keys are RGB-lighted, an additional light is also present near the programmable keys:

The right side of the unit does come with a custom pattern rubber layer, which was designed as a rest place for your ring finger and pinky finger:

A Closer Look Part III

Near the RGB-lighted rubberized scroll wheel, we will get to see two additional programmable keys, which are initially programmed for switching between the pre-configured DPI values:

While many would have thought that there were not more RGB programmable areas, you will be surprised that an additional LED lighting area is to be found in the frontal mouse area:

On the bottom mouse area, we will be able to spot the central sensor lens, but also medium-sized PTFE feet in the corners; near the sensor lens we do also have the screw which helps with the adjustment of the twelve programmable keys segment:

The braided USB cable ends up with a custom Corsair port:

Right after we have connected the mouse to a spare USB port, the LED light show will begin:

Corsair Utility Engine Part I

The Scimitar PRO RGB mouse is backed by the strong CUE 2 customization tool from Corsair; the main interface will detect the newly connected peripheral and adapt the GUI for it:

On the top left side we can see the Scimitar PRO RGB hardware profiles, but also the ones loaded on the computer; further down we will spot the main menus which do allow product customization. First we will remind of the Actions menu, which does permit the user to remap the button functions:

After the desired button has been selected for customization, we can select one of the available functions:

Macro

Text Sequence

Corsair Utility Engine Part II

Key Remapping

Media Keys

Timer

Disable Button

Corsair Utility Engine Part III

Profile Switching

The Lighting Effects menu does allow the user to customize each of the four RGB areas:

The specified LED areas can be enabled or disabled at will:

We can select from the preset RGB effects:

Rainbow

Color Shift

Color Pulse

The DPI selector configuration is next, from where we can choose custom DPI values, in increments of one. We can assign a different color for each DPI step:

Some custom Performance options can be configured in the next menu, such as Angle Snapping or Pointer Precision:

Finally, we do have the Surface Calibration tool, so the sensor can be customized on many types of surfaces:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

After adjusting the position of the 12-key assembly for thumb access, we went ahead and ran Black Desert Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic but also some titles that do not fit in the MMO/MOBA segment such as Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain and Doom. It is perfectly true that you need some time to accommodate with the multi-button design on the left side but the different types of finishes on the buttons along with the guide on the button 5 do really help. After a few days, we started using frequently the side buttons for launching spells in Black Desert or for initiating different attack types in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

For DOOM and Metal Gear Solid, we found ourselves many times pushing the side buttons by mistake, so if you are working with FPS games, third person shooters or other applications which do not require the extra keys it would be best to define an extra profile so these buttons would be completely disabled.

Thanks to the newly integrated 16000 DPI PMW3367 optical sensor, we found the mouse tracking smoothly even at very high-resolution values after we have performed the initial calibration procedure for each surface; we have used for the testing process our trusty ModMyMachine aluminum pad but also a SteelSeries QcK cloth pad.

The Scimitar PRO RGB also benefits from the configuration options of the powerful CUE 2 and besides re-mapping we can also synchronize the LED lighting system with the other Corsair Gaming peripherals we have connected to the same computer.

Besides the classic yellow color scheme, Corsair has also prepared a black version, so it would fit most gaming setups.

The Scimitar PRO RGB mouse can be found online for about 90 Euros.
