KingFast P600 120GB Portable SSD Review

SSD by stefan @ 2017-01-14

KingFast P600 was designed from the ground-up as a fashion element and less of a performer, which can be clearly seen from the test results. In order to keep costs low, the manufacturer did employ TLC NAND so if we start transferring large amount of files or big files to the drive and the SLC buffer fills up, we will get to see notable drops in performance. However, if we are going to use the product to move smaller files around or even install a portable OS on it, then it will operate optimally.

Packaging, A Closer Look

In this article, we will look upon a portable USB 3.0 SSD with an unusual shape, coming from the KingFast Company. The product does have the P600 code name and is shipped inside a tiny cardboard enclosure, in white with golden accents; on the top cover does feature a photo of the product, along with some Chinese writings:

On the box side, KingFast does also advertise that we can use the drive for installing portable OSes, and the fact that P600 can be used as a fashion accessory:

A factory seal is present on the opposite side:

On the bottom, we will learn of the product compatible devices, the fact that it uses an USB Type C connector, its size ( a diameter of 53mm and a height of 9mm), its diminutive weight which is only 27 grams but also the storage capacities (60GB, 120GB and 240GB). KingFast has also listed the rated speeds, which are available until the buffer fills up (450MB/s for the reads and 405MB/s for the writes), operating temperature and also some power consumption details:

After lifting the top cover, we will get to see the product sitting in the middle, but also surrounded by protective foam material:

The bottom layer does contain the product bundle:

This is composed from the User Manual, but also the data transfer cable:

A Closer Look Contd.

The manual reflects the hardware installation procedure, but also how to proceed with installing a portable OS on it:

The provided USB 3.0 cable (regular to Type C) is quite short, but should be enough when using with other portable devices like convertibles, ultrabooks and so on:

The product does come with a stylish aluminum gold-plated enclosure, which almost looks like a small make-up box. The top area writing also reflects the total drive capacity (we have received the 120GB version):

On the side, we will easily spot the USB Type C port:

The opposite area does sport some machined holes for attaching a necklace or lanyard:

On the bottom area, we will find a circular leather layer, along with a round and small aluminum component. This type of construction allows P600 to remain comfortable when worn as a jewelry piece, on the neck:

The data transfer cable can be attached in a snap to the device:

Conclusive Thoughts

KingFast P600 was designed from the ground-up as a fashion element and less of a performer, which can be clearly seen from the test results. In order to keep costs low, the manufacturer did employ TLC NAND so if we start transferring large amount of files or big files to the drive and the SLC buffer fills up, we will get to see notable drops in performance. However, if we are going to use the product to move smaller files around or even install a portable OS on it, then it will operate optimally.

Speaking of the reduced write speeds when transferring a notable amount of data to the drive (about 62GB), we have recorded a minimum speed of 69.7MB/s in Windows:

We have also conducted the HD Tune Pro write test, by wiping the existing partition, which clearly shows how the speed does drop after the buffer fills up:

The only negative aspect about this product is the fact that we were unable to reach the advertised speeds from the box with the P600.

P600 is receiving from us a Novelty award because of its unique shape and because of the fact it can be used as a fashion element.

We would like to thank KingFast for making this review possible!
