Razer Gigantus - Black Edition Mouse Pad Presentation

Miscelleneous by stefan @ 2017-02-14

After the initial inspection, we put the mouse pad to work by using a Cougar Revenger mouse and running games such as Mafia III, ELOA, Black Desert Online, Ghost in The Shell but also Resident Evil 7 Biohazard: by designing the Gigantus as a control pad, we did not need a long learning curve in fast-paced titles. At different DPI levels, the Pixart PMW 3360 tracked flawlessly while the large surface of the mat meant that we did not need to lift up the mouse and reposition it during longer gaming sessions.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Razer for offering us their Gigantus - Black Edition Mouse Pad for testing and reviewing.

About Razer:

"Razer is more than just the world's leading brand in gaming.

We were founded in 1998 in San Diego, California by our CEO Min-Liang Tan and our President Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff in a tiny shared office with a couple other gamers. We have grown today to hundreds of employees worldwide with offices in seven cities, including San Francisco, Hamburg, Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore.

Our vision from the very beginning was to be the world's greatest gaming brand and we've set out to achieve that by designing the best gaming products that any gamer has ever seen.

We believe that truly great products are based on technology, designed with extensive human factors and user ergonomic studies and then tested by the top professional gamers. In simpler terms, our own world class scientists and engineers develop cutting edge technology in-house or with partners, design phenomenal products around core technologies – and test the hell out of them in the field with our pro-gamers before we launch them.

We are the only gaming hardware company in the world with dedicated gaming user interface research and development labs, and our technology and designs are incubated in three dedicated design centers located in facilities in California, Singapore and Shenzhen. No other company boasts of technology like we do – because we're the only guys who have what it takes under the hood.

We tell it like it is: some can pretend to co-develop products with professional gamers, but gamers don't develop technology: scientists and engineers do (and ours just happen to be gamers as well).

We develop and design our products in our own labs and then put them to the test with top professional gamers who use them in pro-level tournaments and then provide us with feedback. Then we iterate on the product, refining it with the feedback – over and over and over again. That's how it's done, that's how a Razer product is built from ground up. No marketing BS and no hype.

We pioneered the eSports movement with the world's first $100K tournament back in 2000 and we have continued to give back to the community by sponsoring top eSports athletes who give back to Razer by beta-testing our products. We remain one of the largest sponsors of eSports community sponsoring top global eSports teams worldwide.

The people that work here at Razer are gamers just like you – some amateur, some ex-professional gamers, some just play for fun, just ask our CEO who will lay the smack down on you in Quake Live or our President, who has over ten level 80's on his local server. Hell, he will even take you on a raid in the middle of the work day.

We are the same gamers who are told by the suits that we need adult supervision and we need a professional CEO or management team – and we're the same gamers who tell the suits exactly where to shove it because we like doing what we do – and we do it on our own terms.

We hope our passion for gaming speaks to you like it does to us, through our products and we hope you enjoy the competitive edge we bring to your game."

Product Features, Specifications

Product Features:

Ultra large mat area designed for low-sense mouse swipers

When you are in the thick of battle, it is frustrating to have your movement be limited by the size of your mouse mat. Substantially larger than the average mouse mat, the Razer Gigantus provides you with ample space to maneuver especially when you play on a low sensitivity setting, reducing the need to lift and reposition your mouse between swipes.

Optimized gaming surface, engineered for speed and control

The Razer Gigantus has been engineered to provide you with a smooth glide and adequate stopping power, so you get the best of both worlds on the battlefield. Free from elevations or depressions, the flat cloth surface of this next level gaming mouse mat is optimized for highly responsive tracking, giving you increased accuracy that meets the needs of Esports athletes.

Enhanced thickness for surface consistency

With 5 mm thick high density foam and a rubberized base, the Razer Gigantus stays firmly in place, even over imperfect surfaces, providing a reliable foundation for consistent mouse movements.

Packaging, A Closer Look

In this article we will concentrate our views upon another Razer product which does not require power to operate properly, while its main goal is to offer gamers a control surface for their high-performance mice so they will have good precision no matter the used DPI. To be more exact, we are discussing about the Razer Gigantus Ultra Large Mouse Pad that is available in three versions: Elite Edition, the Special Black Edition but also the Team Razer Edition (the last two are RazerStore.com exclusives). Our version is the Special Black Edition and comes packed inside quite a large cardboard enclosure (but it is self-explanatory when judging by its overall size):

The box is sealed but in order for the potential customer to feel the pad finishing, Razer has also included a small cutout:

On the external packaging area, the manufacturer has also included the list of main product highlights, but also the dimensions of the pad. The latter is quite important so you will be able to figure out right from the start if it does fit properly on your desk or not:

The pad has a size of 445 mm x 445 mm and this special edition is all-black on the top area, where the textured cloth finish resides:

The Gigantus is quite thick at 5mm and under the textured cloth Razer has used high-density foam:

In one of the corners you will find the Razer logo and surprisingly we can declare this one as the single product flaw: the logo is rubberized and raised from the surface so the mouse will actually have very high difficulties moving on it (most of the time the mouse has abruptly stopped when touching any corner of the logo). We can go past this small flaw by placing the Gigantus with the Razer logo opposed to our position:

The third pad layer is composed of rubber, which sports the well-known signature Razer color:

A closer look at this layer will reveal small hexagonal shapes:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

After the initial inspection, we put the mouse pad to work by using a Cougar Revenger mouse and running games such as Mafia III, ELOA, Black Desert Online, Ghost in The Shell but also Resident Evil 7 Biohazard: by designing the Gigantus as a control pad, we did not need a long learning curve in fast-paced titles. At different DPI levels, the Pixart PMW 3360 tracked flawlessly while the large surface of the mat meant that we did not need to lift up the mouse and reposition it during longer gaming sessions.

Given the high weight of the mat (about 617 grams), we were expecting the product to drift a bit on the table while performing fast moves but it was not the case with the Gigantus, telling us that the underneath rubber layer does its job flawlessly. With this item we are also getting anti-fray stitching so it will be more durable to wear.

If you are in the market for a control gaming mat and have a large desk to use it onto, we do highly recommend the Razer Gigantus. The pad is available online for about 30 Euros, a value which places it near the rest of the other high-end peripherals.
