Lexar JumpDrive Tough USB 3.1 Flash Drive Review

Other by stefan @ 2017-05-23

Despite the fact that we are talking about a storage drive meant for harsh environments, the JumpDrive Tough from Lexar does still remain a stylish product with a two-color combination and good read/write transfer rates. The manufacturer has included an oversized attachment loop for even more flexibility, while data can be protected via the supplied EncryptStick Lite software, which is an advanced security solution with 256-bit AES encryption.

And with high-speed performance and advanced security software, it’s one tough customer. So whether you work or play in harsh conditions, push your devices to the limit, or just want to protect against the bumps and bruises of everyday life, it’s got you covered.

Made tough for life’s challenges

With its rugged outer shell and stylish design, JumpDrive Tough stands up to life’s challenges. It is impact and pressure resistant (up to 750 PSI), harsh weather resistant (-13°F to 300°F), and water resistant (up to 98 feet). It also includes an oversized attachment loop, so from keychain to carabiner, it’s easy to take on the go.

Quickly transfer files.

When it comes to moving content, who’s got time to wait? The high-performance JumpDrive® Tough provides speeds up to 150MB/s read and 60MB/s write.* Quickly transfer a 3GB HD video clip in less than 1 minute, compared to the 4 minutes it takes using a standard USB 2.0 drive.** And for added versatility, the drive is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and 2.0 devices.

Protection—inside and out.

If its rugged good looks weren’t enough, JumpDrive Tough provides protection on the inside, as well. It includes EncryptStick™ Lite software, an advanced security solution with 256-bit AES encryption to help protect your essential files against corruption, loss, and deletion. Easily create a password-protected vault that automatically encrypts data. And for peace of mind, files that are deleted from the vault are securely erased and can’t be recovered.

Packaging, A Closer Look

Here we are looking at another interesting USB Flash Drive from Lexar, and to be more exact the JumpDrive Tough, which is available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants. This specific model is made to sustain a tough environment: is impact and pressure resistant up to 750 PSI, harsh weather temperatures (-13 degrees Fahrenheit to 300 degrees Fahrenheit) but also water resistant (up to 98 feet). The JumpDrive Tough model is shipped in a simple cardboard/plastic enclosure, which does describe the main product highlights on the frontal layer:

On the back side, the manufacturer gets more in-depth regarding the technical specifications, which are written in multiple languages:

JumpDrive Tough shape is clearly rugged versus the other models we have tested in the past; the dual color scheme (teal/dark grey) looks great, while on the USB port cover Lexar has also written the total drive capacity (in our case, the 32GB model):

If we do flip its chassis on the opposite side, we will get to see some more factory internal serial numbers for identification:

The top protective cover holds well onto the USB connector:

A large attachment loop was built to fit keychains up to carabiners:

Test Setup and Test Results

The testbench was composed from the following hardware:

CPU: Intel I5 4690K Retail @ stock

Motherboard: BIOSTAR GAMING Z97X

RAM: GeIL Black Dragon 4x4GB DDR2133 (@1600)

Video: Sparkle GTX 470 with stock and OMNI A.L.C.

Power Supply: Nexus RX-8500 850W modular

HDD: OCZ Vertex 4 240GB SSD

Case: Thermaltake Armor+ LCS, stock cooling

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64

The Lexar JumpDrive Tough USB 3.1 Flash Drive has arrived formatted FAT32:

To determine the flash drive read speeds, the HD Tune v5 utility was used; the read speeds are quite good with this particular model, while the writes are decent (when transferring data from mobile devices) as well for the 16GB variant:

Summary Graph (Read Performance)

To measure the real life performance, we have used the Total Commander application to copy to the flash drive and from the flash drive the same file and recorded the transfer speeds, after they have stabilized.

EncryptStick Lite

The Lexar Jumpdrive Tough comes with the EcryptStick Lite application preloaded to it, which is handy with protecting our personal information or other sensitive files. This security solution does come with 256-bit AES encryption:

After the first application launch, it will automatically search for updates:

The first step in using EcryptStick Lite is to provide a password of your own, which will act as a decoding key:

The user interface of the application is really easy to use; on the top area we have the file vault, where the encrypted files are located, while on the lower area we have access to the system resources (file manager) for moving files from or to the drive vault:

When moving files to the vault, they will be encrypted on-the-fly:

After we have copied the desired files to the vault, we can lock it by pressing the dedicated button:

The files will be unlocked only when the correct password is supplied:

The file vault does have a dedicated folder on the drive, but the information is coded, so without the necessary key, other unauthorized people cannot access it:

Conclusive Thoughts

Despite the fact that we are talking about a storage drive meant for harsh environments, the JumpDrive Tough from Lexar does still remain a stylish product with a two-color combination and good read/write transfer rates. The manufacturer has included an oversized attachment loop for even more flexibility, while data can be protected via the supplied EncryptStick Lite software, which is an advanced security solution with 256-bit AES encryption.

JumpDrive Tough is available in three different capacity variants; the 32GB model can be purchased for about 21 Euros, the 64GB can be had for about 31.79 Euros, while the 128GB model is available for about 51.9 Euros.
