DOOGEE Y6 Moonlight Blue Smartphone Review

Smart Phones by stefan @ 2017-07-11

The Y6 smartphone from DOOGEE comes with a really solid build construction and is also quite heavy versus other products in the same category (about 200 grams). For just 115 Euros, you are getting decent low-end to mainstream performance, a bright 5.5’’ HD display manufactured by Sharp, a responsive touch screen but also a big 3200mAh battery. For easy and more secure screen unlock you can take advantage of the fingerprint reader in the back which does work decently, increase the smartphone storage with a large microSDHC/microSHXC card or simply benefit from the Dual-SIM capabilities of the terminal.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank mobcom for giving us the chance of trying out a sample of the DOOGEE Y6 smartphone!

Product Features

Splendid Colors Crafting from Profound Confidence

Colorful does represent vitality, which makes the selection and forming sense of colors become meaningful. The lack of colors on many other gadgets does seem to make them look conservative and reserved, so DOOGEE Y6 with its color schemes and metallic build raises the bar in this regard. The seven available colors are perfectly reflecting the metallic texture; DOOGEE Y6 is available in Piano White, Piano Black (these two are special editions with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory), Glacier Silver, Shimmer Gold, Moonlight Blue, Agate Red, but also Matte Black finish.

8MP front camera, wide-angle lens with flash

The 88-degree wide-angle camera lens on the frontal camera is meant to capture more scenery elements but also more friends; combined with the software auto-beautify filters, your selfie shots can look sharper and more vibrant.

Selfie flash capabilities make you look good even in lower light

Good lighting can make a real difference, including the selfie mode; the front facing flash is able to provide enough light in order to take shots even during low light conditions.

One-tab beauty and fashion make-up

Girls and women will appreciate the extra filters that are included with the photo application, which allows applying lipstick, eyelashes, lenses and many other make-ups.

LTE Cat-6 is supported

With the inclusion of the mainstream MTK6750 SoC, LTE Cat-6 is supported for providing even higher transfer speeds (where applicable and given the current network load).

Seamless to touch, all curved

The unibody seamless design allows the Y6 to be easily held in hand.

13MP Samsung back camera

Thanks to the included 13MP Samsung camera sensor in the back that supports PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus), the focus time is very small. This type of fast focus is often used in professional DSLR cameras.

Powerful octa-core processor

Thanks to the eight-core MTK6750 SoC, there is an optimal balance offered between performance and power consumption.

5.5’’ Sharp HD Display with 2.5D glass

DOOGEE Y5 does feature a 5.5’’ 720P screen, which is coupled with 2.5D glass design in order to be more pleasant when held in hand.

0.15s fingerprint unlock, the latest fingerprint sensor technology

The included latest generation of the included fingerprint sensor does allow identification and device unlock in a snap!

One-hand mode

With the dedicated one-hand mode, the screen will be minimized in a corner for easier application access.

Product Specifications

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

It has been quite a while since we have had a chance to take a look at a smartphone from DOOGEE, but since mobcom was nice and offered us a review sample, we were more than interested in seeing what the new models have in store for us. The Y6 model is a mainstream 5.5’’ HD display product, with an octa-core SoC from Mediatek, a fingerprint reader, one 8MP frontal camera with flash for selfies but also one 13MP Samsung camera in the back for taking regular photos. The MT6750 SoC does also support LTE Cat-6 for better transfer speeds, while the 3200mAh internal battery supports fast charge with the included 5V 2A power adapter.

The Y6 model does ship inside a simple cardboard box, with the chromed name of the product placed on the top cover:

On the back side of the box, the manufacturer informs us of the main product highlights, but also of the chassis color and IMEIs for both SIM card slots:

After removing the top cover, we will get to see the Y6 smartphone, sitting on the top layer:

The bottom layer does include the hardware bundle, but also the documentation:

DOOGEE does supply the user with the fast charge adapter, one USB cable, a Quick Start Guide, a SIM tray removal pin, one screen protector with the necessary cleaning wipe but also a warranty document:

The SIM tray removal tool is easy to use and its handle is made of black plastic:

Inside the Quick Start Guide, we will also find the main product interfaces explained by the manufacturer:

The supplied power adapter comes with an all-black color scheme and sports a similar look to the one we have found with other Chinese smartphones:

On its back, we could confirm its power rating:

On the top, the power adapter comes with a single USB port:

A Closer Look Part II

The DOOGEE Y6 does come with a printed screen protector on top; the good thing is that the printed layer can be easily removed, while the actual screen protector will remain in-place:

DOOGEE considered to equip this particular model with a 720P screen, despite the large 5.5’’ form factor; the fonts appear on the screen quite clear though, while the maximum brightness is impressive, making the Y6 quite readable in sun light. There is another plus when using a 720P resolution screen and that is the GPU portion of the SoC is not stressed that much so we can enjoy more complex 3D games without any choppiness:

On the top are of the screen we will be able to spot the selfie camera lens, the small flash for the selfie camera (useful in low light conditions), the speaker, but also the proximity sensor:

The bottom area of the screen does hold the Menu, Home and Back buttons; unfortunately, these are not feature a LED backlight:

The frame surrounding the phone is made of plastic, but of good quality; the bottom area features two speaker grills, but only one from the right is used; in the middle, we do have the USB port, while to the left we have a small microphone port:

The left side of the terminal does only hold the SIM card tray:

On the top, we have the well-known headphone/microphone combo jack:

On the right, we not only have the Volume controls, but also the Power/Sleep button:

These buttons are also made of plastic and match the color scheme of the Y6:

A Closer Look Part III

The back side of the DOOGEE Y6 does feature a large brushed aluminum plate:

In the top area we do have the dual LED flash, the 13MP Samsung camera lens but also the fingerprint reader:

Right under the fingerprint reader, we will find the DOOGEE manufacturer logo:

In the lower area, DOOGEE informs us that this particular model was designed in Spain:

By using the supplied SIM ejector pin, we can remove the tray; when removing the tray during normal use, make sure that you have the back of the smartphone facing upwards, because otherwise your both SIMs or the microSD/SIM combination will fall off:

The SIM tray does have clear inscriptions regarding what type of card fits in each compartment:

The manufacturer has also included a PU transparent shell with the Y6, which still highlights the aspect of the phone and at the same time it protects the device on all sides:

Protective covers are available for the USB port, but also the headphone jack:

The Power/Standby and Volume control buttons are fully covered by the case:

A short video presentation should also give you an idea regarding the build of the product:

The Android 6.0 GUI Part I

DOOGEE is providing us with a stock Android 6.0 launcher experience with the Y6, including the default icons:

Some more applications have been pre-installed by the manufacturer, such as Compass, DG Security, DG Xender, Google DUO, Parallel Space, Torch or WPS office:

First, we do have the stock Android 6.0 browser, which works as intended:

The Calculator application does not feature custom skins:

Next, we do have the Calendar application:

The camera application does come with rather basic controls, as we have seen before with MTK-based smartphones:

Several other options can be accessed by clicking onto the small gear icon:

While the camera in the back does come with a 13MP Samsung sensor, the application allows us to shoot at a maximum resolution of 16MP (which is the maximum supported by the MT6750 SoC); obviously, this is interpolated so we can dial down back to 13MP in order to save space:

The Android 6.0 GUI Part II

The video shooting menu is quite standard as well:

The video quality can be adjusted not by resolution, but by presets (low, medium, high, fine):

The preinstalled Google Chrome browser works as intended:

Next, we can remind of the Clock application:

Compass app makes use of the internal smartphone sensors, and does show accurate values:

The Contacts application is next, with the stock Marshmallow skin:

Custom settings are also available here from the upper right menu:

An extra layer of security can be set by using the DG Security application; each app can be locked if necessary:

The Android 6.0 GUI Part III

By using DG Xender, we can transfer files between devices:

The Downloads menu does show the last downloaded files from the web:

Google Drive does not need any extra explanations:

Google Duo has been also pre-installed for taking video calls:

If we are not using one of the regular, public and free email service providers, we can always use the Email app for connecting to any other private addresses:

The File Manager included with this ROM is the stock one:

The FM Radio application does make use of the internal module, but will start only when we do connect a set of headphones:

The Android 6.0 GUI Part IV

The stock Gallery application is next:

Gmail is a very handy tool for sending out and receiving emails:

Google search app and wizard is next:

Google+ social app is also pre-installed with this ROM:

Google Hangouts is another social application from Google, but is not very popular:

The Maps application is helpful for navigation purposes:

Next, we do have the default, SMS messaging application:

The Android 6.0 GUI Part V

After the audio files from the internal/SD card storage have been indexed, they will be displayed in the dedicated Music application:

Parallel Space by LBE Tech does offer the Android users the possibility to log in to multiple accounts from the same device:

The Phone application is the regular version that does come with Marshmallow:

Several other options are available from the top right corner, but the call recording feature is absent; however, the free, downloadable ACR application from the store works just fine with this model (no rooting required):

Google Photos is next:

Google Play Music service is also not missing from the default applications suite:

The Play Store from Google is the place to go in order to download tons of other free and paid applications for your terminal:

A PowerSaver module is also supplied, for conserving battery life when the battery capacity has gone under a certain threshold:

Sound Recorder application is one of the standard apps with the MTK ROMs:

The Torch application allows the user to use the back camera LED as a regular flashlight:

The Android 6.0 GUI Part VI

Google Voice Search can be also used for working with the Google Wizard:

WPS Office is pre-installed for working with office-specific files:

YouTube application really needs no introduction:

The Settings application is the area to go to for modifying the system behavior:

Hardware Details

The DOOGEE Y6 does pack at its heart the MediaTek MT6750 64-bit octa-core SoC, which is a mainstream, power-efficient solution based on Cortex A53 (clocked at a maximum frequency of 1.5GHz), while the GPU side is governed by the Mali T860. The SoC is paired with 2GB of LPDDR3 (single channel RAM), which does allow a moderate number of applications to operate concurrently, while for internal storage we do have a total of 16GB.

Additional hardware information can be found thanks to the free CPU-X application:

Test Results

A comparison with other mainstream smartphones was in order, so we have tested the terminal with multiple applications:

Antutu 6

Basemark GUI

Basemark X

GeekBench 3

RealPI

Vellamo

3DMark

PCMark

Camera Quality

Despite the fact that the Y6 does use a 13MP camera sensor, the results are a mixed bag; sometimes you will find the photos overexposed, a bit of blur can be found in the corners, while the focus performance is quite random. In decent light conditions, the camera can take decent macro shots but these too can vary in quality. In lower light and especially when we do use the HDR function, the accent will be put on blue color, which is not that optimal.

The photos at the maximum resolution along with some more can be found at this link:

https://goo.gl/photos/ood7KtqvuGKrQYhi6

DOOGEE Y6 outputs video in 3GP format, and on the maximum setting from the camera GUI, the quality is average for storage, but decent for social media:

Display Viewing Angles

The DOOGEE Y6 is equipped with a HD 5.5’’ display manufactured by Sharp that does have a good color representation, while the viewing angles are specific to IPS technology. Thanks to the lower pixel density, the maximum brightness is also impressive, which makes the Y6 readable even during the day, in bright sun light.

Conclusive Thoughts

The Android 6.0 ROM DOOGEE Y6 comes with does contain very little bloatware and some of it can be removed (as the office application). The power drain is very little in standby and after a full charge the smartphone could last more than one day and a half with a moderate usage pattern. The large battery benefits are also exemplified by the AnTuTu Tester Battery Score, which is quite satisfactory:

Right after we have started up the GPS Test application, plenty of satellites were detected right away and the locking time was under 10 seconds; this practically means that the GPS is well calibrated and the internal antenna is well placed for optimal navigation.

As we have mentioned before, the back camera does provide mixed results, like random focus quality, photos are too bright in some cases but in good light conditions we can produce quite decent macro shots. The frontal camera does seem to produce photos that are a bit washed out, even with the filter slider turned to the minimum; these photos can be further adjusted with the included filters (more suitable for girls and women rather than for men).

So, to conclude…if you are sharing a lot of photo content on social media rather than adding the photos to your personal collection (which would require a higher quality level of the output), these aspects should not bother you as much.

Regarding the overall Y6 performance, using a 720P screen seems to have some benefits because we were able to run Asphalt 8 at high details with little to no stuttering. In regular, 2D applications such as Facebook or YouTube, the smartphone works really well.

Call quality wise, the microphone is of good quality, so we were able to be heard on the other side of the line without any issue at all.

We do also appreciate the inclusion of the PU shell that does cover the main ports and the fact that the smartphone does not become hot even during intense use.

Besides the average camera quality, we would like to mention that this particular model does not come with a notification LED and also we are not getting LED backlight for the Android capacitive buttons under the screen.
