DOOGEE Shoot 1 Smartphone Review

Smart Phones by stefan @ 2017-07-28

With the Shoot 1, DOOGEE is proposing a low-cost dual back shooter solution for producing bokeh-like photos and at the same time we are getting a nice 5.5’’ FHD display manufactured by SHARP, a high capacity 3300mAh battery, a MT6737T quad-core SoC, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of eMMC. The ARM Mali-T720 MP2 SoC runs at 600Mhz and is unable to provide a smooth 3D gaming experience in more complex games such as Asphalt 8, but simpler titles such as Angry Birds will work just fine. Current firmware versions do sport malware for an unknown reason (which can be removed), but also a weird issue regarding switching microphones after each OS reboot, a problem that should be addressed by DOOGEE ASAP.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank mobcom for giving us the chance of trying out a sample of the DOOGEE Shoot 1 smartphone!

Product Highlights

Wide aperture photos, select focus and depth of field

All you have to do is to select the area you want to have in focus and adjust the depth of field; the embedded feature does allow you to blur the background as needed.

Camera app lets you know if one of the lenses is covered

In order to be able to produce wide aperture photos, Shoot 1 makes use of the dual camera system; if one of the lens is covered, a message will appear inside the application

Dual LED Flash for more light and accurate color reproduction

A dual LED flash can provide the photographer with more light for the shot, also enabling to take photos further away.

PDAF phase-detection auto-focus, 0.17s focus time

Thanks to the Samsung sensor, PDAF only needs one operation in order to focus, which means less blurry shots in good light conditions.

8MP frontal selfie camera, for day and night conditions

The selfie camera is tuned for taking good photos even in lower than optimal light conditions; for the shutter, we can use the filter which automatically takes photos when we do smile or the fingerprint sensor. After the shot has been taken, custom beauty settings can be applied.

One-tap beauty and fashion make-up

The camera application does have included various filters that can be applied after the photo was taken.

View the world in SHARP 5.5’’ FHD display

The Shoot 1 smartphone packs a beautiful 5.5 FHD display manufactured by SHARP, which does come with a 96% NTSC color saturation and a 1400:1 contrast ratio.

DTouch, the most convenient fingerprint

For this particular model, DOOGEE has chosen to include a front-facing fingerprint sensor right on the physical frontal button, and for it we can also assign different other actions.

Powerful quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 256GB expansion

The DOOGEE Shoot 1 smartphone is equipped with a mainstream 1.5GHz quad-core SoC for low power consumption. As memory expansion, we can include microSDXC cards up to 256GB!

Quick charge technique and 5V at 2A fast charge

Thanks to the more powerful charger and fast charge technology, the battery will be replenished in a much shorter time frame.

Turn on LED torch while the screen is still locked

If you do long press the Home button while the screen is locked, the flashlight will start to operate.

Product Specifications

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

It is now time to take a look at another smartphone from DOOGEE thanks to mobcom and to be more exact we are talking about the Shoot 1; this particular model has an interesting highlight which is the dual-camera assembly (13MP + 8MP) in the rear which is paired with a single-tone dual LED flash for creating a Bokeh effect. Additionally, it does carry a frontal 8MP camera sensor for selfies, a large 5.5’’ screen manufactured by SHARP (FHD resolution), a frontal fingerprint sensor and a large 3300mAh battery.

The product is shipped inside a small cardboard enclosure, which does feature a photo of the terminal on the top cover:

On the back, we will be able to spot the main product characteristics, along with the color of the Shoot 1 we are getting, but also its serial numbers; the IMEI identification numbers are also available here:

After lifting the top cover, we will be able to see that the Shoot 1 is protected inside a semi-transparent plastic bag:

The bottom layer does contain the product accessories/bundle:

We are getting one USB cable for data transfer and charging purposes, the power adapter, the User Manual, a SIM ejector pin, one screen protector but also a Limited Warranty DOOGEE leaflet:

The SIM ejector tool can be used easily thanks to the small plastic handle:

Usage instructions along with the main smartphone components are explained inside the documentation:

A first look at the Shoot 1 will reveal the fact that it comes covered by a branded protective screen, but also has a back shell cover pre-installed:

A Closer Look Part II

The power adapter is able to supply on the output 5V at 2A, same specs we have seen with the Y6:

On the top of the adapter we are able to spot a single USB port:

We are happy to inform you that the branded screen we have presented earlier is only an additional layer and when it is peeled off, the actual plastic screen protector remains on the display (a big time saver). Shoot 1 is 77mm wide, 8.7mm thick and 156.6mm long, which is usual for a 5.5’’ display terminal:

On the top screen area, we will be able to spot the 8MP sensor lens, the speaker but also the proximity and light sensors; no notification LEDs are available on this model:

The lower screen area does present itself with a Menu, Home and Back button; the Menu and Back buttons are capacitive and do not feature any LED lighting. The Home button is also equipped with a fingerprint sensor for a faster unlock but also other features:

The bottom frame of the Shoot 1 does come with the central USB port, two loudspeaker grills (there is only one speaker available, not two), but also one microphone:

On the left side, we could only find the Volume -/+ buttons:

On the top area, we do have the headphone jack, which is a combo port:

The right side does come with the SIM card tray, but also the Power/Standby button:

A Closer Look Part III

The physical buttons, along with the SIM tray do come in the same color as the plastic frame:

Despite the advertised metallic black shell, the Shoot 1 back is made entirely from plastic, but sports a good quality metallic paint. A white sticker with the IMEIs is also present here, but can be removed quite easily:

The adhesive residue under the sticker will disappear by itself after less than a day of usage:

On the top, we will be able to spot the dual-camera assembly, the main 13MP one sporting the S5K3L8 Samsung image sensor. The secondary 8MP one is used for attaining the DSLR-specific Bokeh effect and between the two-camera lenses, we do have the dual LED flash assembly:

The lower area does contain some additional inscriptions:

Near the top camera lens, we could also spot the noise-cancelling microphone:

The SIM card removal is an easy process:

We can either install two microSIM cards, or we can go with one microSIM and one microSDXC card for storage expansion up to 256GB:

A short video presentation should also give you an idea regarding the build of the product:

Hardware Details

The DOOGEE Shoot 1 comes with a MediaTek MT6737T SoC, which the SoC manufacturer considers as being their most cost effective R.9 Cat-4 LTE solution and fully Android Marshmallow compatible (by this statement we do judge that we won’t see an Android 7.0 update anytime soon). In more detail, it comes with four 64-bit cores based on Cortex A53 with a frequency of 1.5GHz, while the GPU is a Mali T720 MP2 that is operating at 600MHz. The MT6737T is paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of eMMC internal storage that is rather usual for a low-end to mainstream smartphone, which allows a moderate number of applications to run at once.

Test Results

A comparison with other mainstream smartphones was in order, so we have tested the terminal with multiple applications. We have used the same charts as in the Y6 review, since these two smartphones were tested at the same time. We can clearly see the Shoot 1 lagging a bit behind of the Y6, mostly because of the smaller core count. As you can see from the PcMark results, it does quite well in productivity (general user experience), but falls short regarding the 3D performance because this time we have a pretty weak GPU coupled with a Full-HD display.

Camera Quality

Compared to the DOOGEE Y6, the Shoot 1 features improvements regarding the camera all over the board, despite the fact that both terminals come with main 13MP sensors. The shots are much less overexposed and we are seeing a much better color reproduction, while the focus is performed as intended, on the whole scene. The Wide Aperture mode quality is questionable because we have seen that it is mostly software-based and the scene will be blurred around a circular shape, which we can adjust inside the GUI. The effect does not seem to analyze the distance between objects in the scene, but only applies a preset blur filter, unlike DSLRs do.

DOOGEE Shoot 1 outputs video in 3GP format and we found the quality to be acceptable:

Display Viewing Angles

The DOOGEE Shoot 1 is equipped with a Full HD 5.5’’ display manufactured by Sharp and comes with a good color reproduction, while the viewing angles are specific to IPS technology.

Conclusive Thoughts

On the last page of the review, we will also discuss both pros and cons of the DOOGEE Shoot 1: first, we will begin with the firmware that seems to have added malware with the latest OTA releases. On the DOOGEE forums, the engineers have posted the DOOGEE-Shoot_1-Android6.0-20170118 firmware version, which seems that it is one of the last that was not packed with malware. If you do perform further updates, you will see after the process has been completed some messages regarding that “malware has been found and is being removed”. By scanning with 360 Security, we have found some other infected modules, but the utility was able to clean them. Some forum users do also recommend performing a wipe from the recovery menu as soon as the OTA has been completed, as an additional security measure. Surprisingly, this is not the only software-based issue we have found! In the older firmware versions, such as the one posted by the DOOGEE engineers, the microphones during call were functioning optimally, but with the latest OTA updates, after each reboot, the noise cancellation microphone will switch with the one on the bottom, which will produce a muffled and generally low-quality audio for the person we are discussing with. This issue seems to manifest itself only in regular calls, but audio applications such as Sound Recorded is unaffected. We really hope that the DOOGEE engineers will address this issue quickly, since it has been also reported on XDA and DOOGEE forums, with no actual response.

Regarding the GPS locking speed and precision, we have had some issues at first, meaning that the GPS was getting a lock very slow and soon after it was being desynchronized but there is a workaround. You need to access the MTK Engineer menu and perform a full initialization of the GPS from there, which will take some time and requires you to be located in plain view. After this process has been completed, the GPS lock will occur much faster and at the same time, many more satellites will be detected.

Thanks to the large capacity battery, the Shoot 1 should last easy for about a day after a full charge, in a normal usage pattern.

The camera quality on this model is very good considering the low sale price, and we do also have a bokeh mode to play with (Wide Aperture). This mode is meant to simulate the usual effect we can obtain with DSLRs which focuses very well on the front subject, while blurring the background. In the case of the Shoot 1 we are simply seeing a software filter that allows us to adjust the focus area in a circle pattern, while the rest of the scene will be blurred. The blur area can be adjusted with a small slider in the Wide Aperture mode. The second 8MP camera should have helped for obtaining a more realistic bokeh effect, but at this current time, it does not seem to be the case (maybe in future software updates?). However, the sensor for the 8MP camera does seem to function correctly because if we do cover it, a message will appear on-screen that we need to remove the obstacle in front of it so the photo will be rendered correctly.

Since the Full-HD screen of the Shoot 1 is paired with a low-end GPU, we have seen that more complex games such as Asphalt 8 become laggy, even when lowering the detail levels. Playing less resource-intensive titles such as Angry Birds is recommended for this particular model, while regular applications such as Facebook, Gmail, Instagram, do work just fine.

We appreciate the inclusion of the PU shell with this model, which does offer an additional protection layer, but also the extra plastic screen protector that is meant to be installed after the stock one has worn out.

We would like to thank again to mobcom for making this review possible!
