Product Features, Specifications

Product Features:

Easy speed

Fix your slow computer and feel good about using it again! Load apps and save files immediately with the Crucial BX300, which accesses data over 300% faster than a hard drive. That’s how you get the immediate responsiveness you expect. Changing your storage drive is the proven way to speed up startup times – making your computer start almost as soon as you press the power button and

improving almost every aspect of computer performance.

Easy efficiency

Run your computer cooler, quieter, and faster with 45x the energy efficiency of a typical hard drive – and extend your laptop’s battery life. Reducing system temperatures also helps lengthen the life of your computer and the components within it, which is an inherent advantage of SSD technology. Since SSDs don’t use small mechanical parts that are prone to failure like you’ll find in hard drives, they’re an easy way to improve the health and efficiency of your computer.

Easy installation

Opening your computer and updating your storage drive can seem complicated and intimidating if you’ve never done it before, but our straightforward, easy-to-follow instructions and videos make it so anyone can install an SSD! Millions of people worldwide have chosen a Crucial SSD – it really is easy.

Easy decision: Replace your hard drive with the Crucial BX300 SSD

Booting up, loading things, and transferring and saving files aren’t complicated actions, but a slow and outdated hard drive makes them take forever. SSDs use new flash storage technology to make your computer work almost instantly. You don’t need a new computer – just the Crucial BX300 SSD.

Micron® quality – a higher level of reliability

As a brand of Micron, one of the largest flash storage manufacturers in the world, the Crucial BX300 is backed by the same quality and innovation that has produced some of the world’s most advanced memory and storage technologies. Protect your photos, videos, and irreplaceable files from catastrophic hard drive crashes by storing them on inherently more durable Micron® 3D MLC NAND. With extensive prerelease validation testing and hundreds of SSD qualification tests, the Crucial BX300 has been thoroughly tried, tested, and proven. You’ll notice the difference.

Product Specifications:

Packaging, A Closer Look

Micron has recently launched a new SSD series, which does follow the previous BX200 TLC NAND model; BX300 does now come with in-house 256Gbit 32-layer 3D MLC and is available in capacities from 120GB up to 480GB. Regarding the controller, we again have a Silicon Motion solution as on the BX100 and BX200, which needs DRAM cache to function. We are quite happy to see a MLC implementation again since with TLC the overall performance did drop quite a bit in sustained workloads, after the SLC cache filled up.

The product is shipped inside a small cardboard enclosure, similar to the one we have seen along Micron’s previous models; the manufacturer also notes on the top cover the total capacity of the model we are reviewing:

On the bottom area of the box, we will be welcomed by the list of box contents, but also a web link for checking out more resources:

After unsealing the box and lifting the top cover, we will get to see the main product sitting in the middle, but secured inside a custom plastic mold:

Besides the SSD, we will also receive as a bundle one 7mm to 9.5mm spacer, for even more compatibility options:

As documentation, Micron does include an installation leaflet, but also an Acronis True Image HD software activation key, which simplifies moving data from older HDDs/SSDs to the new BX300:

The BX300 SSD does feature an aluminum casing, with a large sticker on top:

The bottom area does feature a smaller informational sticker, that lists the product power rating, storage capacity, the factory flashed firmware version, some internal serial numbers, but also the SATA version the product was designed for:

A Closer Look Contd.

The usual gold-plated contacts can be also spotted here:

If we do take a look on the sides of the SSD casing, we will discover four screws, which keep the enclosure together:

The BX300 SSD can be opened really easy and after we have removed the top cover, we could observe that the PCB does only occupy half of the footprint:

On one of the PCB sides, we will spot three NAND Flash packages, the DDR3 cache, but also the controller; thermal pads can be also spotted here:

The NAND packages are marked with specific Micron codenames:

The DRAM cache is also manufactured by Micron and for the 240GB model we’ve got 256MB of DDR3 buffer:

The main controller is a Silicon Motion SM2258 with supported technologies such as TRIM, S.M.A.R.T. but also enables SLC write acceleration:

Four other MLC NAND packages are to be found on the back side of the PCB:

Conclusive Thoughts

With the BX300, Micron has succeeded to bring to the market an affordable mainstream SSD that is able to deliver sustained performance (unlike TLC-based counterparts) and also uses DRAM cache in order to obtain a speed boost. The 240GB capacity BX300 drive is available online for just about 92.24 Euros, which makes it a very interesting and capable upgrade option for people which still do rock a HDD as a boot drive. Of course, there is also a 480GB variant available that does not break the bank either, for just about 151 Euros including taxes.
