Patriot Memory Viper 4 Series DDR4 32GB 3000MHz Memory Kit Review

Memory by stefan @ 2017-11-19

The Viper 4 Series DDR4 32GB 3000MHz kit from Patriot Memory is not as flashy as other RGB offerings we have tested from other manufacturers, but comes with a good quality aluminum heat spreader for fast heat dissipation, while using the airflow inside the computer case. 32GB of RAM should be enough for most todays’ games and productivity applications, while most systems should be able to run this kit at the stock speeds without issues, thanks to the pre-programmed XMP 2.0 profile.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Patriot Memory for offering a sample of their Viper 4 Series DDR4 32GB 3000MHz Memory Kit for testing and reviewing.

Product Features, Specifications

Packaging, A Closer Look

In this article we will concentrate our views upon another memory kit from Patriot Memory: the Viper 4 Series DDR4 32GB, comprised of two separate modules, which carry a CAS latency of 16 and were built to function at 3000MHz. The manufacturer has built this product to be compatible with Intel Skylake platforms but also AMD 300 series and the Viper 4 kit does also feature support for XMP 2.0.

The kit is shipped inside a slim cardboard enclosure with a small cut-out, so we can take a look how the memory modules do really look; additionally, we can see some of the product highlights on the frontal layer:

On the opposite side, Patriot Memory has included a short product description, in many languages:

Besides the memory modules, which are additionally held inside a transparent plastic mold, we are receiving a nice set of Viper stickers:

Despite the promotional photos which do show a black PCB, the PV432G300C6K kit does ship with a regular green PCB; the modules are not too tall (in order to preserve compatibility with larger CPU heatsinks):

On the opposite module side, we are seeing a small sticker that houses the product code name along with the XMP 2.0 pre-programmed memory timings and stock speed (PC4-24000 C16):

The top aluminum component was designed in order to further assist with cooling, by using the airflow inside our computer case:

It is detachable if we do remove the screws on the sides:

Test Setup and Test Results Part I

Test Setup

CPU: Intel I5 7600K Retail

CPU Cooler: Deepcool Captain 240 EX RGB AIO

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z270X-Ultra Gaming

RAM: Currently tested kit

Video: KFA2 GeForce GTX 1060 OC 6GB

Power Supply: Cooler Master 850W

SSD: OCZ Vector 150

Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840

The pre-programmed timings and frequencies can be also found by using AIDA64:

Patriot Memory has certified this piece of kit at 3000MHz with latencies of 16-16-16-36, while running at 1.35V. As with every kit we have tried out in the past, we have also went ahead and overclocked it further, first to 3200MHz; the system started the first boot stages fine, but we shortly ended up with a blue screen. We could not get the system stable at 3200MHz even after relaxing the timings, so we did go one step down at 3100MHz; at this frequency, with the 17-17-17-38 timings while retaining the stock voltage, we have obtained a fully stable environment.

Validation

Starting with the JEDEC 2133MHz, we did benchmark the RAM step-by-step up to 3100MHz, in order for you to spot the performance differences.

Conclusive Thoughts

The Viper 4 Series DDR4 32GB 3000MHz kit from Patriot Memory is not as flashy as other RGB offerings we have tested from other manufacturers, but comes with a good quality aluminum heat spreader for fast heat dissipation, while using the airflow inside the computer case. 32GB of RAM should be enough for most todays’ games and productivity applications, while most systems should be able to run this kit at the stock speeds without issues, thanks to the pre-programmed XMP 2.0 profile.

In terms of overclocking, while 3200MHz was not possible with our kit, it could do 3100MHz easy, by just relaxing the timings a bit; even with this small overclock, we could see a performance increase in most test apps we did run.

The RAM kit we have just tested can be found online for about 369 Euros, on par with offerings from other manufacturers.
