Razer Naga Trinity MOBA/MMO Gaming Mouse Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2018-12-05

After setting up Naga Trinity with our own preferences, we went ahead with testing it in games, but also productivity work; thanks to its wide chassis and shape, it is fairly easy to reach the configurable buttons and in our case we did feel right at home while using a palm grip. The DPI settings can be changed quite easily and Razer does also make use of the Hypershift function, for doubling the button mappings (function found with other manufacturers as well, but with other names). The Trinity name is not there for nothing, you are practically getting a 3-in-1 mouse model.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Razer for offering us their Naga Trinity MOBA/MMO Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

About Razer:

"Razer is more than just the world's leading brand in gaming.

We were founded in 1998 in San Diego, California by our CEO Min-Liang Tan and our President Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff in a tiny shared office with a couple other gamers. We have grown today to hundreds of employees worldwide with offices in seven cities, including San Francisco, Hamburg, Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore.

Our vision from the very beginning was to be the world's greatest gaming brand and we've set out to achieve that by designing the best gaming products that any gamer has ever seen.

We believe that truly great products are based on technology, designed with extensive human factors and user ergonomic studies and then tested by the top professional gamers. In simpler terms, our own world class scientists and engineers develop cutting edge technology in-house or with partners, design phenomenal products around core technologies – and test the hell out of them in the field with our pro-gamers before we launch them.

We are the only gaming hardware company in the world with dedicated gaming user interface research and development labs, and our technology and designs are incubated in three dedicated design centers located in facilities in California, Singapore and Shenzhen. No other company boasts of technology like we do – because we're the only guys who have what it takes under the hood.

We tell it like it is: some can pretend to co-develop products with professional gamers, but gamers don't develop technology: scientists and engineers do (and ours just happen to be gamers as well).

We develop and design our products in our own labs and then put them to the test with top professional gamers who use them in pro-level tournaments and then provide us with feedback. Then we iterate on the product, refining it with the feedback – over and over and over again. That's how it's done, that's how a Razer product is built from ground up. No marketing BS and no hype.

We pioneered the eSports movement with the world's first $100K tournament back in 2000 and we have continued to give back to the community by sponsoring top eSports athletes who give back to Razer by beta-testing our products. We remain one of the largest sponsors of eSports community sponsoring top global eSports teams worldwide.

The people that work here at Razer are gamers just like you – some amateur, some ex-professional gamers, some just play for fun, just ask our CEO who will lay the smack down on you in Quake Live or our President, who has over ten level 80's on his local server. Hell, he will even take you on a raid in the middle of the work day.

We are the same gamers who are told by the suits that we need adult supervision and we need a professional CEO or management team – and we're the same gamers who tell the suits exactly where to shove it because we like doing what we do – and we do it on our own terms.

We hope our passion for gaming speaks to you like it does to us, through our products and we hope you enjoy the competitive edge we bring to your game."

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

A very interesting computer mouse has arrived recently to our test labs, that is not dedicated to a single game type, but wants to be universal by including interchangeable button layouts. It’s name is Naga Trinity, is manufactured by the well-known Razer brand and also incorporates the Chroma lighting system. The product is shipped inside a medium-sized cardboard enclosure, that shows the available button layouts, but also how the mouse does look while operating:

On the bottom area of the packaging, we will learn about the package contents, system requirements but also approximate size and weight of the mouse, along with the supplied side panels:

The back area does show the main product highlights:

Inside the box, we will receive a set of documentation materials, while the mouse and its bundle are protected inside a combination of cardboard and plastic:

The user manual is accompanied by a leaflet that welcomes us to the Razer club but also offers links to some online resources:

The supplied manual does describe in detail the Naga Trinity functions, but also how we should install the necessary software:

A set of standard Razer stickers are also shipped along with the product:

The Naga Trinity mouse is named this way because of its three available lateral plates, an aspect that allows the product to be suitable for any type of game or productivity purposes:

For productivity, everyday use and FPS games you can install the two-button side panel, that is also equipped with a rubber layer, in order to offer additional grip:

A Closer Look Part II

Each of the panels do have electrical contacts underneath and are fixed to the mouse with magnetic force; the contacts allow the mouse to detect the plate type, configure the available buttons but also light up the Chroma lighting (when applicable, the two-button plate does not feature LED illumination):

For MOBA gamers, we do have a seven-button layout, in a circular shape; the center area does have a rubber layer applied for easy identification of the button position but also to offer extra grip:

The MMO plate came pre-installed on the Naga Trinity and features a 12-button arrangement:

Without cable, the Naga Trinity only weights 120 grams and features a comfortable shape; it was definitely designed only for right-handed users and top area of the chassis comes with a textured plastic. We do appreciate this type of design, since the rubber-coated mice seem to pick up lint and skin oils much easier and are more difficult to clean:

The scroll wheel is accompanied by two extra programmable buttons (initially programmed for DPI up-down function):

The back side of the chassis features a Chroma-enabled Razer logo, that is not easy to spot while the mouse lighting is turned off:

The right-side panel is meant for rest of the pinky and ring fingers:

On the bottom area of the unit, we will find three PTFE feet (Ultraslick), the 5G optical sensor lens, that can drive up to 16000 DPI, the profile switcher button but also a small LED profile indicator

A Closer Look Part III

By removing the pre-installed plate, we can take a look at the contacts present on the mouse chassis:

The plates can be exchanged in just a few seconds:

As we have seen with other high-end mice, the cable is fully-braided:

The USB connector is Razer branded and comes with the signature colors:

After connecting the mouse to a spare USB port, the LED light show will begin; we will be prompted to install Razer Synapse V3 as well:

Razer Synapse GUI Part I

Naga Trinity customization can be done via the latest Razer Synapse version, which features a brand-new UI, easy to understand. The Synapse unified application functions can be enhanced by installing additional modules; the detected devices will appear on the dashboard and from the same area we can check out the installed modules or access online resources:

From the Customize tab, we can configure each and every button function; the currently detected side panel model will be also shown:

A side view of the mouse can be also accessed, for an easier configuration:

After selecting a programmable button, we will be able to choose one of the functions present on the left side of the GUI:

Each function opens up with different types of options:

Keyboard Function

Mouse Function

Sensitivity

Switch Profile

Razer Synapse GUI Part II

Razer Hypershift

Launch Program

Multimedia

Windows Shortcuts

Text Function

Button Disable

When Hypershift is activated, we can practically map the buttons with a secondary function:

Razer Synapse GUI Part III

As soon as a new panel is installed, it will be detected and shown inside the interface for configuration purposes:

The Performance tab does allow the user to configure the DPI values in multiple stages, enable X-Y separate configuration, adjust the polling rate but also open the stock Windows Mouse Properties window:

The Lighting area takes care of the Chroma features; here we can adjust the LED brightness, set when the lights should automatically turn off, but also work with Quick Effects; if we would like more advanced LED lighting, we should install the Chroma Studio Module:

After it has been installed, the Chroma module opens up in a new section; from here we can choose from one of the available effects and configure each zone:

Available effects:

Ripple

Reactive

Static

Razer Synapse GUI Part IV

Wave

Starlight

Fire

Breathing

Spectrum Cycling

Synapse also provides a section for mouse mat calibration purposes:

Here we can also adjust the lift-off range:

Profiles can be further defined and these can be linked to games as well:

Macro is another module we can install to Synapse and with it we are able to define complex sequences and assign them to the available Naga Trinity buttons:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

After setting up Naga Trinity with our own preferences, we went ahead with testing it in games, but also productivity work; thanks to its wide chassis and shape, it is fairly easy to reach the configurable buttons and in our case we did feel right at home while using a palm grip. The DPI settings can be changed quite easily and Razer does also make use of the Hypershift function, for doubling the button mappings (function found with other manufacturers as well, but with other names). The Trinity name is not there for nothing, you are practically getting a 3-in-1 mouse model.

It is guaranteed you will find a setup you will like most, given the configuration possibilities with the three separate plates: productivity environments and FPS, MOBA, MMOs and more.

Razer Synapse 3 has reached maturity and we haven’t found any issues while operating it; Macros and Chroma effects can be installed as separate modules and also uninstalled in case we do not need it at the current moment.

Naga Trinity can be found online for about 89 Euros, which is a good value for the multitude of functions and hardware configuration options.
