DOOGEE Y7 Plus Smartphone Review

Smart Phones by stefan @ 2019-02-05

The DOOGEE Y7 Plus smartphone offers a good overall experience for everyday use thanks to its mainstream SoC, the enough RAM quantity (6GB) and the 64GB of included storage for taking quite a bit of photos. At the time of the review, the latest software version was 8.0 and did pack the Android security patch level from 5th of October. The 6.18’’ screen packs a 2246x1080 resolution, is enough bright during use outside, while the included bottom speaker can deliver decent, enough loud audio.

The back shooter offers 2x optical zoom thanks to the wide set of lens, but when using it we must make sure that we will keep the smartphone on a steady surface, otherwise the result will be blurry, low quality. Besides the good looking design of the Y7 Plus, it includes a battery of 5080mAh and its benefits can be observed during normal use.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

The latest smartphone we are reviewing from DOOGEE takes part of the Y series and was thought as a fashion oriented product, while carrying mainstream hardware specifications. The product can be purchased in three different colors (Obsidian Black, Phantom Purple or Aurora Blue) and features a large 6.18 inch FHD+ LTPS screen, but also a notch. One of the features we should also note about this product is that its battery has a capacity of 5080mAh, which allows quite a bit of SOT while in normal use.

Our Y7 Plus sample was provided by mobcom; mobcom takes care of distributing brand products that have just been launched on other markets, making them available in Europe as well. mobcom name comes from “mobile communication” and the company aims to offer professional services to all their customers.

The product is shipped inside a medium cardboard enclosure, highlighting the product series:

On the back side of the box, DOOGEE has listed the main product highlights, along with the IMEIs for both SIM slots:

By lifting the top cover, we will get to see the smartphone, sitting in the middle and surrounded by foam material:

Underneath, we will find an envelope with documentation and the protective case, the power adapter but also the USB Type-C Power/Data transfer cable. The supplied AC Power adapter is rated on the output as 5V at 2A:

Besides the manual and the silicone case, we are also getting a Limited Warranty leaflet that needs to be filled in:

The included silicone case is to be appreciated, because it would be almost impossible to get one separately from retail stores; it does offer complete protection on the back of the Y7 Plus and adds quite a bit of grip to the chassis:

On the bottom we will be able to spot the perforations for the speaker grills, but also for the USB Type C port:

On the side, we can find the Power/Volume rocker area of the case:

The top portion of the case has an orifice for the 3.5mm jack:

Finally, we do have the cut-out for the dual-camera, along with the flash:

A Closer Look Part II

The included 6.18 inch display comes with a 1080*2246 FHD+ resolution and a pixel density of 403PPI:

The notch area of the screen does include a central speaker, a frontal 8MP, F/2.2 80 degree wide-angle camera lens but also the usual proximity sensor and light sensor:

Under the screen, we have the fingerprint reader that does not double-up as a Home button (it is fixed, you cannot down press it); we could see the same button design with the Huawei P10/P10 Plus series of smartphones:

On the bottom area of the blue metallic frame, we will find two speaker grills, only the right one being populated:

The right side of the frame comes with the Volume rocker, but also the Power/Standby button:

The top area includes a welcome 3.5mm headset jack:

On the left, we can only spot the SIM tray:

The included SIM tray can house up to two nanoSIM cards, or one SIM and one microSDHC/microSDXC card for expanding the device storage:

A Closer Look Part III

The back cover of the Y7 Plus Aurora Blue comes with a purple top and transforms into green as we move towards the bottom; the back is also reflexive, made of plastic and is quite a fingerprint magnet if we do not use the included protective silicone case:

Near the LED flash, we’ve got one 16MP plus one 13MP camera, f/2.0; this camera setup supports 2x optical zoom when using the 82 degree wide-angle camera lens:

In the middle, we will be able to spot the DOOGEE logo:

Some of the supported standards are listed on the bottom, and here we will also learn that the design of the Y7 Plus was realized in Spain:

Here is a shot with the smartphone screen turned on, so you can check out the bezels:

Also, we have taken some shots of the smartphone, with the protective case attached:

The Android GUI Part I

The Android 8.0 interface DOOGEE uses for the Y7 Plus is quite clean, without unnecessary bloatware; some of the application shortcuts are present on the main desktop:

Hardware Details

Y7 Plus is equipped with the Mediatek Helio P25 SoC and was introduced back in 2017; it was manufactured on a 16nm FinFET+ process and carries 8 ARM Cortex A-53 CPU cores. The Big-Little architecture type can be seen here, with a performance cluster clocked at up to 2.6GHz and one power-efficiency cluster that is clocked up to 1.6GHz. The SoC also includes a LTE Cat.6 modem, while the GPU is a Mali T880 MP3, clocked at up to 1000MHz. The smartphone is also equipped with 6GB of DDR3 1600MHz RAM and 64GB of internal storage; for more in-depth information related to its hardware, we will use the CPU-X reporting application:

Test Results

A comparison with other smartphones was in order, so we have tested the terminal with multiple applications.

Display Viewing Angles

Y7 Plus comes with a LTPS 2.5D curved glass screen and provides good viewing angles; the display is bright even with slider at 50% and does not seem to distort colors when viewing from different positions.

Camera Quality Part I

The 16MP+13MP camera combo can capture good shots in decent lighting conditions, but when we have tried to capture landscapes (the whole scene must remain in focus), the camera seems to keep in good focus only the central area of the shot, the corners being less detailed. In addition, if the details we would like to capture are quite far away, these will be a bit blurry and look pixelated. The macro shots are quite clear and the faces are detected correctly and appear clear in the resulted photo. The software-based blur effect is a bit unrealistic, the only effect of this type we did enjoy was with the U12+ from HTC, but that terminal is in a completely different price range…

Camera Quality Part II

The original size photos, unedited, can be found at this following link .

Video Samples

The videos shot with the back camera system are a bit underwelming (lack of stabilization, loss of focus), while the audio capture is fine, but should be alright if the user only wants to share the content on Instagram :).

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

Back in 2017, we have tested two other DOOGEE smartphones and we have noticed that their microphone quality was not very good; this has changed radically with the Y7 Plus where we could be heard loud and clear during conversations.

In order to test the battery life, we have used the Work 2.0 of the PCMark suite; the software ran continuously for 8h and 13 minutes. Afterwards, the smartphone got into power saving mode and still had 16% left. After using the terminal for a few days, we could say that it should last at least three days without the need of recharging, which is quite a lot for many smartphones nowadays.

Y7 Plus does not have issues with GPS locking either; after starting the test utility, we have got a lock-on after just a few seconds:

As future firmware improvements, we would recommend fixing the display issue with the notification icons that often get underneath the notch and are not visible but also an improved camera application and reworked drivers in order not to favor the central area of the scene each time we would like to take a landscape photo.

For about 229 euros, we are getting a good overall smartphone, with an attractive chassis, a great battery life and screen, a mainstream SoC and a decent camera system.
