Razer DeathAdder V2 Gaming Mouse Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2020-03-18

It was only a matter of time till Razer would bring the latest technologies to its signature DeathAdder mouse; we have tested the mouse in The Division 2, Dying Light and Beyond: Two Souls and we were quite impressed with the comfort this mouse can offer, even during longer gaming sessions. The high-performance sensor is quite overkill for most mainstream gamers, but a delight for competitive gamers that need to squeeze even the last bit of performance out of their gear.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Razer for offering us their DeathAdder V2 Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

About Razer:

"Razer is more than just the world's leading brand in gaming.

We were founded in 1998 in San Diego, California by our CEO Min-Liang Tan and our President Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff in a tiny shared office with a couple other gamers. We have grown today to hundreds of employees worldwide with offices in seven cities, including San Francisco, Hamburg, Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore.

Our vision from the very beginning was to be the world's greatest gaming brand and we've set out to achieve that by designing the best gaming products that any gamer has ever seen.

We believe that truly great products are based on technology, designed with extensive human factors and user ergonomic studies and then tested by the top professional gamers. In simpler terms, our own world class scientists and engineers develop cutting edge technology in-house or with partners, design phenomenal products around core technologies – and test the hell out of them in the field with our pro-gamers before we launch them.

We are the only gaming hardware company in the world with dedicated gaming user interface research and development labs, and our technology and designs are incubated in three dedicated design centers located in facilities in California, Singapore and Shenzhen. No other company boasts of technology like we do – because we're the only guys who have what it takes under the hood.

We tell it like it is: some can pretend to co-develop products with professional gamers, but gamers don't develop technology: scientists and engineers do (and ours just happen to be gamers as well).

We develop and design our products in our own labs and then put them to the test with top professional gamers who use them in pro-level tournaments and then provide us with feedback. Then we iterate on the product, refining it with the feedback – over and over and over again. That's how it's done, that's how a Razer product is built from ground up. No marketing BS and no hype.

We pioneered the eSports movement with the world's first $100K tournament back in 2000 and we have continued to give back to the community by sponsoring top eSports athletes who give back to Razer by beta-testing our products. We remain one of the largest sponsors of eSports community sponsoring top global eSports teams worldwide.

The people that work here at Razer are gamers just like you – some amateur, some ex-professional gamers, some just play for fun, just ask our CEO who will lay the smack down on you in Quake Live or our President, who has over ten level 80's on his local server. Hell, he will even take you on a raid in the middle of the work day.

We are the same gamers who are told by the suits that we need adult supervision and we need a professional CEO or management team – and we're the same gamers who tell the suits exactly where to shove it because we like doing what we do – and we do it on our own terms.

We hope our passion for gaming speaks to you like it does to us, through our products and we hope you enjoy the competitive edge we bring to your game."

Product Features

BEST-IN-CLASS ERGONOMICS

With over 10 million Razer DeathAdders sold, the most celebrated and awarded gaming mouse in the world has earned its popularity through its exceptional ergonomic design. Perfectly suited for a palm grip, it also works well with claw and fingertip styles.

The Razer DeathAdder V2 continues this legacy, retaining its signature shape while shedding more weight for quicker handling to improve your gameplay. Going beyond conventional office ergonomics, the optimized design also provides greater comfort for gaming—important for those long raids or when you’re grinding your rank on ladder.

RAZER™ OPTICAL MOUSE SWITCH

Utilizing an infrared light beam to register every click, the switches in this ergonomic mouse actuate with an industry-leading response time of 0.2 milliseconds. Because it no longer requires traditional physical contact, this form of actuation removes the need for debounce delay and never triggers unintended clicks, giving you closer control and flawless execution.

RAZER FOCUS+ OPTICAL SENSOR

Our new, improved sensor has an industry-leading 20,000 DPI with 99.6% resolution accuracy, ensuring that even the finest movement from this ergonomic mouse is tracked with consistency. Equipped with intelligent functions, the sensor becomes even more accurate, allowing for an acute level of precision for game-winning headshots.

RAZER SPEEDFLEX CABLE

The Razer DeathAdder V2’s cable has greater flexibility and is designed to produce minimal drag, so that you can perform quicker, more fluid swipes for a higher degree of control.

INSTINCTIVE SCROLL WHEEL TACTILITY

Perfectly-tuned for distinct, notched scrolling at a lower resistance—so cycling through your weapons and executing bunny hops becomes truly second nature.

8 PROGRAMMABLE BUTTONS

This gaming mouse comes with 8 programmable buttons that are fully configurable via Razer Synapse 3, giving you access to macros and secondary functions so every action can be executed with ease.

100% PTFE MOUSE FEET

Enjoy slick mouse movement across any surface with mouse feet made from the purest, highest grade of PTFE—a material used to coat non-stick pans.

ADVANCED ON-BOARD MEMORY

Save and store up to 5 profile configurations to the on-board memory and bring your settings anywhere—so you’re always ready to compete with your preferred controls.

Packaging, A Closer Look

The iconic mouse from Razer has had another reincarnation recently, in form of the DeathAdder V2; versus the Elite, we could remind of the next-generation sensor with DPI up to 20K, inclusion of the Razer Optical switches, the Razer Speedflex cable, a lightweight design and more!

The product is shipped inside a medium-sized cardboard box, which shows a photo of the product right in the front, along with the main highlights:

On the side of the box, Razer does get in more detail over some of the features:

On the back, we will get to see explanations of the main chassis components:

The bottom area of the box does come with the list of contents, system requirements but also the product serial numbers:

Besides the mouse, we will also receive some documentation:

The semi-transparent leaflet does offer an insight over Razers’ mouse categories, together with some online resources that are accessible from the Get Started page:

As we have seen with the latest peripherals from Razer, a set of different stickers can be found along with the product:

Instead of getting a User’s Manual like a small book, we will get a foldable guide, in multiple languages:

Let’s take a closer look over the V2 and see what has been improved:

A Closer Look Contd.

The mouse has preserved the familiar look of the DeathAdder family, with the ergonomic shape, mainly aimed at palm grips; the top panel is made from textured plastic, that offers a good grip:

The middle portion, between the left and right buttons is populated by the scroll wheel and two programmable buttons, that are initially mapped for DPI step navigation. The left and right mouse button is the most frequently used, so Razer has installed its brand-new optical switches for it. The response time is insanely low at about 0.2 milliseconds, while the durability has been increased to about 70 million clicks. The scroll wheel has been tuned as well in order to offer less resistance, for easy cycling between weapons or tasks:

The left side panel does come with two more programmable buttons, that are easily accessible with our thumb finger; the rest area is textured too, for a better grip:

Besides the RGB-enabled scroll wheel, we do also have a RGB back logo, that is a signature of the DeathAdder design:

The right side panel was designed for resting our fingers but also features a small-dotted area for grip purposes:

For the bottom area of the mouse, Razer has used 100% PTFE feet, in a white color, as we have seen with the Viper mouse. Also, like on the Viper model, we will get to see here the Profile selector button, with a small RGB LED for confirming which profile we are currently using.

The 20K Focus+ sensor is also found here and was developed in cooperation with PixArt; as we have noted with the Viper, the mouse does perform flawlessly without any erratic movements or input lag:

One other aspect of the mouse we have really enjoyed is the Speedflex Cable, that is very flexible and reminds us of the shoelace cable from Dream Machines models:

Razer has also used its signature colors on the USB connector:

After plugging the mouse in a spare USB port, the RGB lighting will display in rainbow mode as well:

Razer Synapse Part I

When we did first connect the DeathAdder V2 to our test system, the Razer installer has popped up right away in order to prompt for the Synapse and rest of software installation. Razer software has also compatible software for driving HUE devices or Nanoleaf panels as well:

The application launcher will assist with new app installs but also with updates:

The GUI opens with many options that we can configure right away, but let’s go first to the dedicated configuration area of the DeathAdder V2:

Synapse does allow the user to configure all available buttons except Left Click:

By clicking on the pictogram that resembles an integrated circuit, we can save profiles right to the on-board memory of the mouse:

Like the initial mappings would not be enough, Hypershift does double the number of mappings for each available button:

The remapping task is quite easy, since after clicking on a button from the interface, the left menu will pop up, with plenty of options to take advantage of:

Keyboard Function

Mouse Function

Sensitivity

Macro:

We can open the Macro menu from the same section and configure our key sequences as needed:

The Performance tab does allow the user to define the number of DPI stages (steps) and configure them accordingly; we can also adjust the Polling rate and Windows Mouse properties:

From the Lighting area, we will be able to customize the LED brightness, choose when to switch the lighting off, but also work with LED lighting presets:

When talking about Chroma lighting, we have two choices:

-Quick Effects for working with easy to use presets

-Advanced Effects for creating more complex ones

Quick Effects offers some pre-defined modes:

Chroma Studio gets enabled in Advanced Effects Mode:

Chroma Studio also comes with a separate GUI of its own, where we can choose which LED sections we should configure, supports layering and more:

We have more presets to choose from in this mode:

We can choose to work with the scroll wheel area, with the back-logo area or both:

The Calibration area does help the Focus+ sensor adapt to the surface you are using it on; we have the option to adjust the tracking distance or enable Assymetric Cut-off (different landing distance when compared to the lift-off distance):

The calibration takes part in the “manual calibration section”:

The profiles can be linked to specific games or other applications:

Chroma Visualizer will allow the device to adapt to the audio output signal, so it will transform the mouse in a visual EQ:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

It was only a matter of time till Razer would bring the latest technologies to its signature DeathAdder mouse; we have tested the mouse in The Division 2, Dying Light and Beyond: Two Souls and we were quite impressed with the comfort this mouse can offer, even during longer gaming sessions. The high-performance sensor is quite overkill for most mainstream gamers, but a delight for competitive gamers that need to squeeze even the last bit of performance out of their gear.

The other two aspects we do really enjoy versus the previous iterations is the addition of the very flexible Speedflex Cable, which almost makes you think that you are working with a wireless model, while the low weight of the optimized chassis does complete the experience.

In terms of durability, besides the PTFE feet that will have a normal wear depending on the surface you will use the mouse on, there are no rubberized surfaces on the DeathAdder V2, so it will be able to retain its “as new” aspect for a really long time.

Razer does also back up the DeathAdder with a 2-year warranty and if you purchase directly from their online store, you will also get 14 days of risk-free return.

Online, the mouse can be found online for about 69 Euros.
