Toshiba P300 6TB Desktop PC Hard Drive Review

HDD by stefan @ 2020-03-20

Over the previously tested P300 4TB, the 6TB version has improvements regarding both read and write speeds, but in regular operation the two drives will perform about the same. What is to be appreciated here is the increased storage capacity, while keeping the noise levels and power consumption to a minimum. We have performed out testing without a direct airflow to the drive, and never seen temperatures raising over 33 degrees Celsius, meaning that the product will operate fine in cases with less than decent ventilation as well.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Toshiba Corporation for offering a sample of their P300 6TB Desktop PC Hard Drive for testing and reviewing.

Product Features

Powerful storage

The P300 is ideal for graphic designers and creative professionals looking for a powerful performance. Available in storage capacities of up to 6 TB, with fast read and write speeds and a secure design.

Performance alongside reliability

The P300’s dual-stage actuator, available in the 2 TB to 6 TB models, improves positional accuracy, negating the effects on head-track alignment that vibrations can cause. This design makes for more precise, faster read and write speeds, and instant access to your data.

Enhanced access performance

The data read/write access sequence performance is further enhanced through innovative techniques to minimize head movement and disk revolutions. Optimized data access sequence helps improve performance and minimize mechanical workload from the drive.

Keep data secure

The P300’s design includes an internal shock sensor, ensuring no data is lost. In addition, ramp loading technology means that when your hard drive or desktop PC are being transported, the drive slider does not make contact with the disk and risk wearing or data loss.

Built to deliver, designed to last

Toshiba is renowned the world over for 50 years of leading innovation – and the power behind its range of hard drives is no exception. Designed for high capacity and excellent performance, you can be sure that Toshiba’s wealth of experience in hard drives is at work in your storage system.

Product Specifications

Packaging, A Closer Look

We will continue or look on the P300 HDD series from Toshiba with the 6TB model, which is currently the highest capacity model. As the 4TB drive before it, the rotational speed is 5400RPM, which not only means a lower power consumption (2.68W in IDLE vs 5.2W on the 3TB 7200RPM drive) but also lower acoustics. Toshiba has equipped the 4TB and 6TB variants with 128MB of buffer, while the entire P300 series does feature a ramp loading design along with a shock sensor.

Both 4TB and 6TB models are only offered in bulk form, as our sample:

The drive resembles the design of the previous 4TB model, with a large sticker in the middle:

The sticker offers more information on the drive, such as the total drive capacity, platter rotating speed, buffer size, internal code name, drive revision, drive firmware, serial number and more!

On the sides of the drive, we will easily spot the mount areas:

The frontal area comes with two separate barcodes:

In the back of the drive, we will find the usual gold-plated SATA 6Gb/s Data / Power ports:

On the bottom, we will get to see the drive motor contacts, but also the small electrical board that holds the cache, drive controller and so on:

Test Setup and Extra Info

The test bench was composed from the following hardware:

CPU: Intel I5 9700K Retail

CPU Cooler: Deepcool Captain 240 EX RGB AIO

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Ultra Gaming

RAM: Patriot Memory Viper RGB Series DDR4

First, we have conducted a surface test (HDD Sentinel Read + Write), in order to make sure that the drive has arrived safe from the courier:

The drive has arrived unformatted:

In order to conduct our tests, we went ahead and formatted the drive to NTFS:

Conclusive Thoughts

Over the previously tested P300 4TB, the 6TB version has improvements regarding both read and write speeds, but in regular operation the two drives will perform about the same. What is to be appreciated here is the increased storage capacity, while keeping the noise levels and power consumption to a minimum. We have performed out testing without a direct airflow to the drive, and never seen temperatures raising over 33 degrees Celsius, meaning that the product will operate fine in cases with less than decent ventilation as well.

The drive is priced at about 156 Euros (possibly because of lower availability), which is more expensive than two separate P300 3TB, but we would still go for this one due to lower overall power consumption and noise levels.

The P300 series is backed up by a 2-year warranty.
