CORSAIR iCUE QL140 RGB 140mm PWM White Fans Showcase

VGA & Other Cooling by stefan @ 2020-04-24

The new white variant of the iCUE QL140 series is even more highlighted inside the computer case and matches great if you have other white elements on your build. The product does feature premium materials and remains silent even near maximum rotational speeds. In order to be able to drive the RGB elements of up to six fans of this kind, CORSAIR does include a Lighting Node CORE controller, which links to a SATA Power connector but also an USB 2.0 header in order to be able to communicate with the iCUE software.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank CORSAIR for offering us their iCUE QL140 RGB 140mm PWM White Fans for showcasing on MadShrimps.be .

Product Specifications

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Not long ago we have reviewed the iCUE QL140 RGB 140mm PWM black fans from CORSAIR, which were able to deliver good performance and quite an impressive light show. In this showcase article, we will look again on this fan model, but this time the white version, which was launched more recently in February of 2020. If you have an all-white case, a black case with white accents or the other way around, white fans do really look nice and are highlighted even better inside your build.

As before, we will conduct our presentation inside the CORSAIR Graphite760T White Edition case; this time, we have received the five fans as follows:

-three single packs of one fan each

-one pack with two fans, including the Lighting Node CORE

The packaging does not differ a lot versus the black version, but this time we will get a view of the white revision of it, right on the frontal area. The 140mm version of the fans were designed to run at low RPM speeds (up to 1250), maintaining a silent working environment:

On the side of the box, we will be able to spot a “Super Chilled” CORSAIR saying:

Additional fan views will be provided as well:

On the bottom area of the box, CORSAIR does list the internal contents as drawings, but we’ll also notice the sticker with the product internal code name and serial number:

On the back, the manufacturer has listed more in-depth technical specifications, but also some of the main product highlights, in different languages:

The box interior is split into three compartments, two of which do contain the fans themselves, but also a separate one with the accessories and documentation:

The hardware bundle consists of the fan mounting screws, along with the Lighting Node CORE:

A Closer Look Part II

Some 3M double-coated tissue tape is also made available for securing the CORE onto the computer chassis:

The Lighting Node CORE can control RGB effects of a total of six fans, which are numbered as indicated; for correct operation, the fans must be plugged in with the first numbered header and not in a random order:

Besides the USB 2.0 interface, the controller does also need power from a SATA PSU connector:

While the black version had the frontal and back rings white, along with the blades, this new model is all white for a better color unification. The only elements which have remained in a black color are the rubber vibration dampeners and the cables:

Each fan does feature to separate cables, one of which goes to the Lighting Node CORE and the other one is a regular PWM type:

These fans do feature 12 individually configurable fans for the outer ring, while the inner ring does house four additional LEDs. The middle circular machined aluminum CORSAIR logo element really looks premium!

The vibration dampening rubber components are quite subtle in terms of design:

A look from the side does reveal the middle frame, but also the outer rings:

On the back side of the fan, we will be able to spot a similar arrangement regarding the outer and inner lighting system; there is a small difference though: the inner ring does now come with 6 individually addressable RGB LEDs instead of four:

A Closer Look Part III

The machined aluminum ring with the middle logo will also make its appearance here:

Besides the hardware bundle, the documentation is composed of the Lighting Node CORE manual, a leaflet regarding supported standards, but also the WEEE:

The single-fan pack does sport about the same box art; this time we will not get a Lighting Node CORE as well, so these are mainly thought as add-ons for the 2-pack box:

Inside the box, we will find the WEEE, but also the leaflet regarding standardization:

Here we will receive one fan, but also the necessary mounting screws:

A Closer Look Part IV

After connecting the Lighting Node CORE to our test computer, we have connected it to the five fans; thanks to the white color of the frame, the fans are highlighted even better now and depending on the viewing angle we could also spot the individual LEDs on the rings:

Thanks to the multitude of individually addressable fans, the fan blades are also lighted up, bringing quite a LED show in your computer case:

The fans look as good on the back side:

After replacing the fans with the white variant inside the test system, the black and white theme is looking really awesome:

Here are some close-up shots of the fans as well:

Thanks to the separate RGB rings on the back of the fans, the back side of the case is fairly lighted up as well:

Video Exemplification of the LED Lighting System

Here is an exemplification of the lighting presets we can apply via iCUE; we have chosen to show these with the fans out of the case, for a better view:

Conclusive Thoughts

The new white variant of the iCUE QL140 series is even more highlighted inside the computer case and matches great if you have other white elements on your build. The product does feature premium materials and remains silent even near maximum rotational speeds. In order to be able to drive the RGB elements of up to six fans of this kind, CORSAIR does include a Lighting Node CORE controller, which links to a SATA Power connector but also an USB 2.0 header in order to be able to communicate with the iCUE software.

Besides the proprietary cables for RGB, the fans do also feature the usual 4-wire PWM, which we will connect to a fan controller, the motherboard headers but they are also supported by the CORSAIR Commander PRO. Given the multitude of cabling we must manage if installing more fans in a single build, we will have to take more time planning where the Lighting Node CORE should go, for an optimal wire management.

CORSAIR has plenty of other peripherals and components compatible with iCUE, so we can build unique and complex RGB profiles along the whole system. The function we enjoy best is the Temperature feature, where we can identify how hot are particular computer components while the system is in load, by looking at the color of the LEDs; of course, we can specify which temperature value should be used for the green color, the yellow color but also when transitioning to the red color. If the green/yellow/red indicators are not on your liking, you can customize it with your most preferred colors as well.

As before, the only negative aspect about this product is the price; a single fan pack can be had for about 39.9 Euros, while the dual-fan pack can be purchased for about 99.9 Euros (since it includes the Lighting Node CORE as well).
