PRECISION IS THE BASIS

 

We have invested a great deal of time and effort to optimize the PCB making sure that delays are maximally reduced. Similar to DM1 Pro S - the S2 model has a polling rate set at 1000 Hz and LOD at ~ 1.8-2.0 mm. DM1 S2 is equipped with the best components available on the market, making it a gaming mouse that will allow you to crush virtual opponents.

 

DETAILS MATTER

 

We focused on the mouse design to include features that make sure that you have full freedom and precision of operation…to make you a winner.

 

We set the LOD value to 1.8 mm as it is the optimal setting for most players. If this value were even a little higher, the mouse would follow when it should not do so. We wanted the mouse to move quickly and accurately, nothing more.

 

MATTE COATING - READY FOR ALL CONDITIONS

 

We decided to leave the matte-rubber finish on the DM1 S2 gaming mouse because people loved the extraordinary comfort and firm grip.

 

Large Teflon sliders are there to keep the mouse in absolute control. We know that after frequent use of the mouse the sliders can wear off, so we decided to add extra set in the box. Sometimes they can come in handy, as we all know of cases where people lose track of the extra sliders.

 

DM1 S2 Evo also has a shoelace cable beloved by all gamers! The cable is extremely flexible and virtually imperceptible when playing. It's the perfect combination of all the best features in a wireless and wired mouse put together in the new Evo mouse!

The newly released DM1 S2 mouse from Dream Machines is meant to be an upgrade over the DM1 Pro S model, launched no less than four years ago. The model retains the design elements we have seen along with the DM1 FPS and incorporates the PMW3360 optical sensor.

 

The product is shipped inside a black and white cardboard enclosure, with a large S2 logo in the front:

Inside, we will get to see some documentation, a backup set of PTFE feet but also the main product, inside a transparent plastic mold:

 

 

 

The usage modes are explained in the supplied leaflet, along with some advices:

 

 

 

Dream Machines is one of the few manufacturers offering replacement, pre-cut PTFE pads and this is to be appreciated:

 

 

 

Let’s concentrate our attention on the main product though:

 

 

 

The SteelSeries Sensei-like shape makes its appearance once again with the DM1 S2; we are dealing with an ambidextrous chassis, with buttons only present on the left side panel. The top segment of the chassis is coated with matte black rubber, for a firm grip and optimal comfort:

 

 

 

In the front, we will be able to spot the RGB-enabled scroll wheel, but also a shield-looking button which is initially programmed for DPI cycling. The left and right switches are Huano and guaranteed for 20 million clicks:

 

 

 

On left side panel we will be able to spot the buttons we have previously mentioned, with a helpful design which makes them easier to press / identify:

 

 

 

 

On the curved back, we will spot an RGB-enabled Dream Machines logo:

 

 

 

The right side of the mouse is pretty much the same, minus the programmable buttons:

 

 

 

On the bottom, we will be able to spot the three large PTFE feet, a small sticker with the product name, power rating and serial number but also the PMW3360 optical sensor lens. The sensor can track up to 12000DPI, with good optimization for different surface types, while the lift off distance is set at 1.8mm. The maximum supported polling rate is 1000Hz and can be adjusted from the software as well. We have checked out mice with this particular sensor from Cougar, Mad Catz, Cooler Master but also SteelSeries and it has been proven as being quite reliable :

 

 

 

The Dream Machines mice are well known for the inclusion of the shoelace cable, which is very flexible and has a total length of 1.8m:

 

 

 

The USB connector does retain a regular, OEM design and is not customized:

 

 

 

A standalone software is not yet available for the DM1 S2, it will come a bit later, but compatibility has been assured with the DM1 PRO S utility. The GUI is quite straight-forward, with menus on the top area of the screen and profile slots on the lower area. The Button area does allow for key reprogramming:

Inside the DPI and Pointer Settings, we do have the selection of DPI levels and adjustment for each; here we can adjust the Acceleration, but also the Polling rate:

 

 

 

 

The DM Logo Light menu is not separated for the scroll wheel and the back logo, these go together; here we can pick a pre-defined color, choose a custom one, adjust the LED brightness but also choose the light pulsation rate:

After trying a few games with the DM1 S2, the shape seemed very familiar and thanks to the all-around rubberized coating, the comfort is good. The mouse does not have a large footprint as others, so the main grip types it will be used with will be claw and fingertip. The left and right Huano switch buttons are a bit harder to press versus the Omron counterparts, but after a bit of training, you will be used to it right away.

 

In terms of the sensor performance, we do have the PMW3360 which we have seen with many other mice before it and has proven to be great! If you do not need to use very high DPI values, such as up to 20000 as we have seen with the latest Razer DeathAdder V2 gaming mouse, most mainstream gamers will be happy with it.

 

With the DM1 S2, we do also see the inclusion of the shoelace cable, which is very flexible and makes you think that you would be using a wireless version of the mouse.

 

The only negative points regarding this model do not aim at the product functionality at all; first, the rubberized coating seems to pick up skin oils and lint quite easily and secondly, the software could have been an unified version, without the need to download a different utility each and every time for configuration, in case we are using multiple Dream Machines mice.

 

As we have previously seen with Dream Machine mice, their price is very low compared to many other brands; the DM1 S2 can be picked up for just about 30 Euros!
