Razer Naga Pro MMO/MOBA/FPS Gaming Mouse Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2020-10-06

The all-around Naga Pro mouse from Razer is meant to captivate gamers which prefer different gaming genres by including easy swappable plates for MOBA, MMOs and FPS. The 12-button plate is the one which needs the most time to get used to, but previous owners of the Naga line should be right at home with this one. The latest gaming sensor can deliver up to 20000 DPI and the battery life is quite impressive when using the mouse without the RGB lighting effects; from our testing, with the RGB brightness at 50% we have only noted about 2% battery drain per hour while using the mouse for productivity work but also while playing Serious Sam 4 and Darksburg.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Razer for offering us their Naga Pro MMO/MOBA/FPS Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

About Razer:

"Razer is more than just the world's leading brand in gaming.

We were founded in 1998 in San Diego, California by our CEO Min-Liang Tan and our President Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff in a tiny shared office with a couple other gamers. We have grown today to hundreds of employees worldwide with offices in seven cities, including San Francisco, Hamburg, Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore.

Our vision from the very beginning was to be the world's greatest gaming brand and we've set out to achieve that by designing the best gaming products that any gamer has ever seen.

We believe that truly great products are based on technology, designed with extensive human factors and user ergonomic studies and then tested by the top professional gamers. In simpler terms, our own world class scientists and engineers develop cutting edge technology in-house or with partners, design phenomenal products around core technologies – and test the hell out of them in the field with our pro-gamers before we launch them.

We are the only gaming hardware company in the world with dedicated gaming user interface research and development labs, and our technology and designs are incubated in three dedicated design centers located in facilities in California, Singapore and Shenzhen. No other company boasts of technology like we do – because we're the only guys who have what it takes under the hood.

We tell it like it is: some can pretend to co-develop products with professional gamers, but gamers don't develop technology: scientists and engineers do (and ours just happen to be gamers as well).

We develop and design our products in our own labs and then put them to the test with top professional gamers who use them in pro-level tournaments and then provide us with feedback. Then we iterate on the product, refining it with the feedback – over and over and over again. That's how it's done, that's how a Razer product is built from ground up. No marketing BS and no hype.

We pioneered the eSports movement with the world's first $100K tournament back in 2000 and we have continued to give back to the community by sponsoring top eSports athletes who give back to Razer by beta-testing our products. We remain one of the largest sponsors of eSports community sponsoring top global eSports teams worldwide.

The people that work here at Razer are gamers just like you – some amateur, some ex-professional gamers, some just play for fun, just ask our CEO who will lay the smack down on you in Quake Live or our President, who has over ten level 80's on his local server. Hell, he will even take you on a raid in the middle of the work day.

We are the same gamers who are told by the suits that we need adult supervision and we need a professional CEO or management team – and we're the same gamers who tell the suits exactly where to shove it because we like doing what we do – and we do it on our own terms.

We hope our passion for gaming speaks to you like it does to us, through our products and we hope you enjoy the competitive edge we bring to your game."

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Razer’s multifunctional mouse for different game types has been revised under the Naga Pro name and includes quite a bit of improvements including wireless capabilities, an impressive battery life, an even higher performing sensor, new optical switches for the most frequently used buttons but also redesigned switchable button plates. The mouse can also use a docking station to charge instead of the supplied cable, but this one is not included in the original packaging (maybe this feature would have increased the price outside the range Razer has thought of?)

Due to its interchangeable left side button plates, this mouse is also described by Razer as “modular” and is shipped inside a compact cardboard box, featuring the well-known color scheme; here we will also learn that the product features Hyperspeed Wireless technology, meaning high-speed transmission of data between the wireless dongle and the mouse, very low latency so you won’t notice any difference versus a wired mouse but also automatic channel switching in case you are living in an urban area with a lot of wireless networks around:

On the side of the box, the main product features are carefully highlighted again, together with the box contents, computer system requirements but also the Razer Synapse unified software requirements:

On the back side, we will notice and exploded view of the mouse, showing all the three panels, the charging cable, the dongle, the modes of connection but also the compatible Razer Mouse Dock (sold separately). Razer does also add here the important fact that we should expect about 100 hours of battery life from a single charge (impressive right?) and that the product features a 2-year warranty:

Inside the box, we will first notice the documentation; the leaflet with the company description and signed by Min-Liang Tan is also present here:

From the User Manual we will learn important info such as how to operate the panels, view the battery low power indicator, how to use the different connectivity modes and so on…:

A nice set of stickers is also included here:

Here is what is included in the box hardware-wise:

-the main product with the MMO plate pre-installed

-the MOBA plate

-the FPS plate

-the charging cable

-an USB adapter for placing the wireless dongle away from our computer in order to have less interference

First we will begin with the dongle, which is similar to the one we have seen with CORSAIR’s DARK CORE PRO and helps moving the wireless dongle far away from the computer case/components, especially when you are using the mouse with a desktop.

A Closer Look Part II

On one of the sides we do have the place to fit the USB charging cable:

The other side will fit the Hyperspeed Wireless dongle:

The USB cable is of good quality, fully braided but is less flexible when compared with the shoelace one from Dream Machines or the one from Mountain Makalu 67:

The MOBA plate has been completely redesigned and instead of placing the buttons in a circular pattern, there are two rows with three easy-identifiable buttons (three-by-two configuration); we do find this design easier to learn versus the previous revision:

In the back we have the gold-plated electrical contacts but also one magnet on each side for easy removal-installation:

The FPS panel is pretty much the same as on the Naga Trinity, only the rubberized thumb rest pattern has changed:

The design has been preserved for the MMO panel as well, which comes pre-installed on the Naga Pro; it is worth to be mentioned that this is the only RGB-enabled panel:

A Closer Look Part III

This is not in the league of very light mice as we have seen the previous products, weighting about 117 grams, but this is understandable given the internal battery with very high autonomy and the large mouse footprint, best used with a palm grip. It comes with a right-handed ergonomic shape, rubber material being present only in the finger rest areas (which is a good thing!):

On the rounded back, we will find a subtle Razer logo, which is clearly visible when the mouse is powered on:

In the front, we can observe the RGB enabled scroll wheel which can be also moved to the left or to the right for extra mappings, but also two more programmable buttons in the piano-black area:

The left and right buttons are powered by Razer’s optical switches, with a very fast response time of 0.2ms. These are much more durable versus the regular OMRON/Huano versions, sporting a lifespan of 70 million actuations!

The right-side panel is non-removable and includes a rubberized rest area for the pinkie finger:

Here is how the mouse does look with the left side panel removed:

We will notice on its chassis the electrical contacts for detecting right away which panel is attached to the mouse, for controlling the buttons but also for RGB lighting on the MMO panel:

Here we will also find the compartment for storing the wireless Hypershift wireless dongle:

The dongle is very compact, appreciated when you have it installed to a laptop configuration:

A Closer Look Part IV

The product factory codes are listed in the back:

On the bottom area we will notice PTFE feet of different shapes and sizes, the gold-plated contacts for the optional charging dock, a Profile button with RGB LED but also a switch for cycling between BT, Off and Wireless modes. Naga Pro does now feature the Focus+ optical sensor with a maximum tracking DPI of 20000, was manufactured in cooperation with PixArt and we have found it with many other mice before it such as the Viper Ultimate or DeathAdder V2:

Before testing, we have charged the mouse battery fully, with the included USB cable:

The RGB lighting of the Naga Pro is subtle enough and can be adjusted with our preferences after installing Synapse software:

Razer Synapse 3 Part I

Right after plugging in the mouse to our test system, the install prompt for Synapse did pop out:

The software suite is quite modular and we can choose to install only the needed parts:

The Synapse software can operate in both Guest and User mode; while using Guest, our settings will not be saved to the cloud and we won’t be able to restore it when moving to another computer:

The main interface will show the detected (and supported) hardware, but also the installed modules:

In the area dedicated for Naga Pro, we have the option to choose one of the available profiles, see the exact battery charge status but also customize the button functions:

All buttons can be re-mapped a second time by using Hypershift function:

After selecting a desired key for programming, a menu will also pop up on the left side, for choosing one of the desired functions:

Razer Synapse 3 Part III

The Performance tab will allow the user to choose the number of DPI steps and the DPI value for each one; the Polling Rate is also selectable here, along with the shortcut to Windows Mouse Properties:

The RGB area allows us to turn the LEDs on or off, adjust the brightness, turn off RGB lighting when display is turned off or after some IDLE time or work with Chroma effects:

More advanced, layered RGB effects can be always programmed by using Chroma Studio:

The mouse sensor can be fine-tuned for the surface you are using it on, with Smart Tracking or Manual Calibration:

Some additional power saving modes are available in the Power menu, for specifying the Sleep mode timer or for when to enable Low Power Mode:

Synapse does also allow the user to link profiles to specified games:

We will be able to turn our mouse into a visual EQ by using Chroma Visualizer, which monitors the selected audio source:

The Macro area does have a dedicated menu of its own, where we can record our sequences with custom delays and more!

The Synapse application comes with some general settings as well:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

The mouse can also function in Bluetooth mode, with even better battery life but this time we won’t be able to enjoy near-zero latency as with the Hyperspeed Wireless. Given the high autonomy, charging the mouse with the included USB cable should not be an issue, also counting the fact that the mouse can be used while charging as well. Considering the high sale price of about 170 Euros, we would have preferred to have that “optional” charging dock included as well, for more flexibility.

The Razer Synapse software is quite complex and does not need extra introduction; it offers plenty of modules for customizing the mouse and allows working with layered RGB effects as well. When we do have many different Razer Chroma devices on hand, we can sync the effects between them for an even more interesting effect!
