Mountain Makalu 67 White Gaming Mouse Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2020-12-03

The white version of the Makalu 67 sports the same features versus the black one we have previously reviewed, but there have been made notable improvements regarding the RGB lighting implementation, the build is now even more solid versus the beta edition (we have noted no flex at all when pressing on the chassis), while the 5-degree angle strain relief is better implemented. We do particularly enjoy the white version because it highlights the black programmable buttons with ease and at the same time it attracts eyes more, especially when integrated with an all-black system build.

Introduction

Firstly, we would like to thank Mountain for offering us a sample of their Makalu 67 White Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

About Mountain:

“Mountain creates innovative, premium peripherals with a user-centric design that enables gamers to perform at their best. Their vision is for gamers to have what they need to perform, through uncompromising innovation, pioneering design, supreme quality, and customization.

“Reach Your Summit” is the mantra of Mountain.

Much like climbing a Mountain, gaming takes you on a journey that can be fun, challenging and exciting. Some may seek the thrill of climbing the most challenging slopes, while others are perfectly happy with a hike up an easily approachable mountainside. It doesn’t matter what games we play; the ascension creates the experiences and memories that we love to share, our way to the top of the Mountain.

Some of us are old school gamers, others are youngsters on the bleeding edge of the gaming industry. From Quakeworld on PC and Samurai Shodown on the Neo Geo to CS:GO and Anno 1800, we’ve played them all. We think that, like the ever-evolving PC hardware industry, competitive and recreational gaming is as much about the journey as it is about the destination.”

Packaging, A Closer Look

Mountain was nice and has also provided us with the final version of the Makalu 67 mouse, but this time in its white variant, which is a really good choice in case you are sporting a black/white computer setup scheme. As before, we will notice the lightweight ribcage design, the inclusion of Omron switches for the left/right buttons, a shoelace-like USB cable but also the newest PixArt PAW3370 sensor that can track values of up to 19000DPI.

As before, we will note a functional and modern packaging style, while on the top cover we will spot the “Reach your Summit” saying:

On one of the sides, we will note the box contents, along with the tech specs list:

Moving on, we will note the product serial number but also the announcement on the partnership with Plastic Bank, assuring that no wasteful materials are used:

A short product description is also available, written in multiple languages:

On the back, we will see the photo adaptation to the white model, but also detailed explanations regarding the product construction and the software:

The side which needs to be unfolded n order to access the mouse compartment has been designed with style in order to also house the Mountain logo; this part of the packaging is also held in place with magnetic force:

After lifting the top cover, we will note that the product is also surrounded by recyclable protective foam:

Here we will spot the company founder’s resolution, while in the back we do have some interesting drawings of the mouse design:

Besides the white Makalu 67, we will also receive the Quick Start Guide, a set of nice case stickers but also an additional set of replaceable mouse feet:

The mouse does show the main functions of the buttons, but also will reveal links to online resources; the product is covered by a 2-year warranty:

A Closer Look Contd.

By flipping the guide around, we will learn that Mountain does also sell different accessories and apparel on mountainshop.com:

The spare mouse feet do better integrate with the white version of the mouse in terms of color:

Makalu 67 does look stunning in white, the top DPI button, the scroll wheel and lateral black buttons offering a bit of contrast; the mouse comes with a comfortable grip, while the patented ribcage design does come with a water-repellent PCB coating; again, we do appreciate the textured plastic and the lack of rubberized paint!

The left/right buttons are the most used as on every mouse, so Mountain has equipped it with durable Omron switches, which have a lifespan of 50M actuations; here we will also note the RGB illumination segments which are no longer shown as distinctive LED spots for a more fluent experience. Between the scroll wheel and the DPI selector button we do have the LED DPI indicators, which are easier to spot now due to the color of the chassis:

On the left side of the Makalu 67, we will note that only a small portion of the panel does feature perforations, while the frontal area does not, in order to enhance the overall durability. Two additional programmable buttons can be spotted here, which can be easily accessed; these also come with a grippy texture and are all-black. A subtle Mountain logo is also present near the frontal area:

The right side does sport a similar design, but only here we will note no additional programmable buttons, specific with models designed for right-handed people; a closer inspection does reveal the Mountain logo on the right button cover:

The USB cable is angled to about 5 degrees in order to improve overall gliding:

On the bottom area of the chassis we will observe the PixArt PAW3370 sensor lens, two large PTFE mouse feet in the same color with the mouse, but also the same patented ribcage design for even more weight reduction. An indent is available in both positions in order to allow easy removal of the old feet:

The USB cable is held together by a rubber tie, which is also Mountain branded; as we have mentioned before, the cable is very flexible, as we have seen with the shoelace-like cable from Dream Machines and is branded as “Mountain Lifeline”. This particular feature coupled with the low weight of the Makalu 67 of just about 67g (not a coincidence in the naming), makes you think that you are using a wireless mouse and not a wired one! The total cable length is 1.8m:

The USB connector comes with the Mountain logo but also gold plating for optimal contact:

Base Camp Software Part I

After installing and running the latest version of the Base Camp software (1.0.20), Makalu 67 was detected right away and we have also got a prompt in order to perform a firmware update:

The first area of configuration is Profiles, where we can rename the current one, link the profile to a certain application, export it, perform a duplicate action or reset it to default:

The Lighting effects are next, with some presets readily available for selection:

Static

Color Wave

Breathing

Custom

Base Camp Software Part II

The programmable keys can be mapped with other functions; we do only have to take action and select the desired button in order to begin programming:

Default Function

Button Disable

OS Commands

Run Program

Run Macro

Base Camp Software Part III

Media

Keyboard Shortcuts

Mouse Functions

The Macro section has a dedicated menu of its own, from where we can create new sequences, set custom delays and more!

The Settings area does allow the user to change the Polling Rate, the Sensitivity, Click Speed, set a custom Button Response Time, enable Angle Snapping, choose from one of the two presets involving Lift-off Distance but also customize the DPI values for the levels:

Conclusive Thoughts

The white version of the Makalu 67 sports the same features versus the black one we have previously reviewed, but there have been made notable improvements regarding the RGB lighting implementation, the build is now even more solid versus the beta edition (we have noted no flex at all when pressing on the chassis), while the 5-degree angle strain relief is better implemented. We do particularly enjoy the white version because it highlights the black programmable buttons with ease and at the same time it attracts eyes more, especially when integrated with an all-black system build.

The mouse has offered the same flawless experience in the games we have tested such as League of Legends, MU Genesis, Rocket League and GTA V. The low weight and the Mountain Lifeline cable really fit in well together and make you think that you are using a wireless version of the Makalu 67 instead, but this time you do not need to care about battery life and recharging :).

If you remember well from the last time, we have mentioned some software instability issues with Base Camp; with this occasion, we would like to inform that with the latest downloadable version of the utility all these are gone and the software performed well even after a system reboot/restart.

Makalu 67 launches today (3rd of December) with a recommended price of 59.99 Euros.
