Patriot P300 M.2 PCIe Gen 3 x4 2TB SSD Review

SSD by stefan @ 2021-03-15

The 2TB version of the P300 SSD does deliver good overall performance by employing a DRAMless solution via the Phison PS5013-E13-31 controller, which also supports Host Memory Buffer for keeping the write speeds constant for longer. The system performance will also affect the drive speeds but overall we have seen better read/writes versus the 1TB SKU.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Patriot Memory for offering a sample of their P300 M.2 PCIe Gen 3 x4 2TB SSD for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

The 2TB version of the entry-level P300 SSD from Patriot Memory has reached our labs just recently. It does come with a blue PCB and a Phison controller. The product includes a 3-year warranty, while the rated TBW is at 640TB. Its packaging is like the ones we have seen along with USB Flash Drives and memory cards, a combination of cardboard and protective plastic in the middle:

On the back side we will note some hardware specifications, in different languages, together with addresses of Patriot offices around the world, some online resources but also the product serial number:

By removing the top cardboard packaging layer, we will uncover the plastic casing the drive is held in:

The frontal area of the PCB is fully covered by a large white sticker, highlighting the total drive capacity, the internal code name, supported standards and more!

On the back side there are no other components available:

The SSD NAND IC packages are positioned the same as on the 1TB version, but the controller is different:

This time we are talking about a Phison PS5013-E13-31 controller with 4 channels and 4 lanes and employs a DRAMless solution. It makes use of HMB (Host Memory Buffer) function which allows the drive to use a portion of the system memory for caching purposes, minimizing the costs:

The drive utilizes four Toshiba TLC 3D NAND Flash ICs with the TA8HG65AWV code name. each having 512GB of storage:

Conclusive Thoughts

The 2TB version of the P300 SSD does deliver good overall performance by employing a DRAMless solution via the Phison PS5013-E13-31 controller, which also supports Host Memory Buffer for keeping the write speeds constant for longer. The system performance will also affect the drive speeds but overall we have seen better read/writes versus the 1TB SKU.

In order to have an idea over how the drive operates during long write scenarios, we have fired up HD Tune Pro and its write test benchmark:

Thanks to the double capacity, the TBW rating is now raised to 640TB, while the drive is also backed up by a 3-year warranty.

At the time of the review, the drive was available for about 230 Euros, quite a bit lower than its introductory price. We would recommend this drive to be used in both desktops, laptops as a boot drive or as a secondary storage device.
