Patriot Viper V770 RGB Gaming Keyboard Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2021-06-06

After the initial keyboard setup, we went ahead to test it in Outriders, Saints Row: The Third – Remastered but also DOOM Eternal and Tell Me Why: the keyboard was silent enough during more intense action scenes and very response, despite not using CHERRY MX original Red switches. This keyboard comes with plenty of dedicated configuration buttons (so no need to go right away to the software GUI), an analog audio pass-through, USB 2.0 pass-through, per-key RGB backlighting but also a magnetic wrist rest with independent backlight settings/integration.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

In this article we will look upon another interesting Viper Gaming peripheral which takes part of the “Expert” segment, meaning the high-end product area. This is a full-sized keyboard including some extra programmable keys and full RGB backlighting, coming in a pretty large cardboard enclosure:

The main keyboard highlights are described on the left side of the top cover:

There is a small opening on the right, in the area of the directional keys for taking a look at the keycaps:

Similar product information can be also spotted on side of the packaging:

A small product description is available as well:

The back includes information regarding the main product components, differences between Kailh switch types but also the full list of product specifications:

After removing the top packaging layer, we will get to see that the keyboard is further packed inside a thicker cardboard box, all-red:

The V770 is surrounded inside and covered on the top with a sponge-like material but is also wrapped inside a transparent plastic bag, in order to avoid scratches during transit:

Besides the main product, we will also get the wrist rest, an envelope with documentation but also a bit of hardware bundle:

The envelope also comes with a nice set of Viper stickers:

The Quick Start Guide simply shows how we should connect the keyboard to our computer:

A Closer Look Part II

This is one interesting keyboard which also comes with an analog audio pass-through, with separate headset/microphone jack plugs. If the machine we are going to connect the keyboard to does come with a combo jack, an adapter is supplied as well. The orange key puller helps to remove the keycaps with ease in order to perform cleaning or for replacing it with other models:

The contacts are gold plated for optimal conductivity:

V770 comes with a gray/black color scheme, the gray section being made of aluminum. This design gives the product a rugged feel and the keycaps are quite visible without the RGB lighting turned on as well:

The extra programmable keys do come with the Viper branding and are carefully placed on the left side of the keyboard:

Quite a bit of extra function keys are available on the top area of the frame; here we’ve got the Wave/Spotlight/Radar effect key, the Ripple mode key, the Sidewinder/Vortex key, but also a key for switching between Raindrop and Reactive modes:

The next set of keys allow configuration of Breathe mode, Spectrum/Static modes but also adjust LED brightness:

The multimedia controls do follow, which look very interesting such as airplane switches which change function depending on the selected position:

The Volume wheel is handy as well and comes equipped with Mute functionality:

A Closer Look Part III

Custom RGB key profiles can be saved by using the F1 to F5 keys as save slots; recording is started with FN+F12 key combination and can be saved by pressing the same combination again:

Several more key functions are allocated for the PrtScrn/PauseBreak/PgUp/PgDn keys:

The Function key comes with a large Viper logo:

In the top right corner, near the Volume wheel we have an additional red Viper logo present:

The portion of the keyboard facing us is fitted with magnets in order to attach the wrist pad with ease:

Something we haven’t seen before with other keyboards is the set of gold-plated contacts in front:

On the left side of the keyboard, we will note a RGB segment as well but also a pass-through USB 2.0 port; this one is very handy when working frequently with card readers or for connecting other low-powered devices as well!

The right side houses the 3.5mm combo audio jack; we would have preferred to have the audio jack present on the left side, because usually the headsets have the analog cable traveling form the left earcup:

In the frontal area of the keyboard there are no additional interfaces, but only a small tray for allowing our smartphone to be kept in front:

The keyboard cable is not too flexible but is very sturdy; the braiding follows the colors scheme of the Viper Gaming brand:

A Closer Look Part IV

The keyboard comes with the analog audio pass-through cables, the USB 2.0 cable for the included USB but also the cable for the main keyboard functions as well:

By removing one of the keycaps, we did reveal the Kailh Red switch, with a transparent housing and a RGB LED:

The bottom area of the keyboard comes with plenty of rubber feet and a central sticker with the product code name:

The kickstands are provided with rubber tips as well, which is to be appreciated!

The supplied wrist rest follows the design line of the keyboard and is covered by a rubber coating, which helps with grip and comfort:

The bottom layer includes six rubber feet, so it won’t move easily from the set position:

Same gold plated contacts as we have seen on the keyboard are also present here….for supplying power to the RGB lighting!

Given the magnetic feature, the wrist rest will be easily attached/detached from the V770:

After connecting the keyboard to our test computer, we were quite surprised how good the whole setup does look, with the attached wrist rest which, guess what: it can be controlled separately in terms of RGB lighting!

The Software Interface

Viper Gaming V770 comes with a dedicated software application, which allows all configuration to be done from the main screen; here we will be able to adjust the lighting effects for both keyboard and wrist rest, set the response time but also adjust the report rate; Game Mode and Windows Key Lock can be enabled/disabled from the same section:

Here are the RGB effects we can work with regarding the keyboard:

The wrist rest has different dedicated effects:

The Profile button opens a separate window for working with different profiles:

The Macros menu has a dedicated area from where we can record key sequences and save them as desired:

Several actions can be applied to the sequences if needed:

Upon selection of a key, we can set a different function:

Pre-defined macros can be dedicated to a single key:

Basic presets are available from the dedicated window tab:

Some dedicated actions can be set from the “Advanced” menu:

The GUI also assists with keyboard reset or firmware upgrades:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

After the initial keyboard setup, we went ahead to test it in Outriders, Saints Row: The Third – Remastered but also DOOM Eternal and Tell Me Why: the keyboard was silent enough during more intense action scenes and very response, despite not using CHERRY MX original Red switches. This keyboard comes with plenty of dedicated configuration buttons (so no need to go right away to the software GUI), an analog audio pass-through, USB 2.0 pass-through, per-key RGB backlighting but also a magnetic wrist rest with independent backlight settings/integration. If the keyboard stock keys are not enough, the V770 model comes with five extra programmable buttons on the left side.

The software is easy to use but is not as polished or as integrated with other Viper peripherals in order to have synced RGB profiles. We do appreciate this time though the inclusion of more RGB presets, while the LED brightness and effect speed can be adjusted by moving some sliders.

We could think of only one downside regarding V770 and it is the positioning of the analog jack on the right side (it should have been positioned on the left, along with the USB pass-through port.

The V770 Viper Gaming keyboard can be found online for about 127.7 Euros, which is great considering the offered features!
