Dream Machines DM6 Holey Duo Gaming Mouse Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2021-07-09

After customizing the DM6 Holey Duo with our own DPI preferences, we went ahead and tried it in multiple game types such as Dark Alliance, The Evil Within, DOOM Eternal and Prodeus: the mouse felt responsive in both wired and wireless modes (used the wireless extender) and haven’t noted any erratic behavior from the sensor. At just 79 grams, the mouse feels very light and controllable during intense gaming sessions, while it’s shape and rubber coating retains a heightened level of comfort.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Dream Machines for offering a sample of their DM6 Holey Duo Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

Product Features

Say hello to my little friend

DM6 Holey Duo is our new “one of a kind” device. Can't decide whether you want a wired or a wireless mouse? Say no more, we've got you covered! This device can run on a regular cable like the ones you're already used to, or you can just pull the plug and continue playing. It truly is “the best of both worlds!” You want to play your games from your couch - unplug this bad boy and carry on!

Enter the Matrix

Alright, so you get the DM6 Holey Duo mouse, set it up - it works as it should, but you want to fine tune it to your very own specifications and personal high standards? Boy, do we have the software for you! Just plug in your new mouse, fire it up, and in a few seconds, you can select your desired profile, DPI increments, hotkeys etc. The first thing you will want to change are the lights to match your RGB setup, won't you? Yeah, we know - we are nerds ourselves, which is why we put everything we like in the things that we make for you so that you can make the DM6 Holey Duo only yours.

Ghost in a Shell

Release yourself from the chains of cabling and unnecessary grams. DM6 Holey Duo is the condensed supernova of efficiency. Once again, we shed all the weight that we could; we even poked some holes in the shell to make it lighter. And even though we added the battery for wireless functioning, it still weighs only 79 grams, which is barely noticeable whether you shackle it with the cable or set it free - your speed and accuracy will be uncompromised.

It's Big Brain Time

So since we can never decide on one thing, we make things 2-in -1. In order to let the DM6 Holey Duo work in “dual” mode, we needed some new brains in this thing. So we got some fresh hardware onboard, as well as a PixArt 3335 to capitalize on the dual nature of this monster. Whether you like to keep it on a leash or let it run free - this sensor will never fail you.

Suit up!

Alright, so with DM6 Holey, we pretty much “hit the sweet spot” with Huano Blue switches, and we are still very happy with them! Why change something that works so well? 20 million hits per button and a super satisfying click mean that you can be smashing through opponents like the champion that you are!

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

Like in the immortal novel, you can decide whether you want to be tethered or completely untamed. All it takes is a simple pull, and your DM6 Holey Duo will switch to wireless mode so you don't have to bother with the cable. Or in case you feel like the cable gives you the edge, plug it back in and you are always good to go. Choice is yours, Chief!

Packaging, A Closer Look

In this article we will look upon another interesting mouse peripheral from Dream Machines, which is a variation of the DM6 Holey S we have reviewed back in September of 2020. This newer model integrates a battery for enabling the wireless capability, but also comes with an updated PixArt PAW3335 sensor which consumes less power.

The product is shipped inside a compact cardboard enclosure, which shows a photo of the DM6 Holey Duo but also mentions that we are dealing with a wireless + wired connection device:

On the back, we do have noted the main product highlights:

After removing the top cover, we will learn that Dream Machines has used quite a bit of protective foam to keep the mouse safe from scratches:

The hardware is also offered with a couple of leaflets which instruct on how to perform the installation and what usage environments to avoid:

Besides the DM6 Holey Duo, we will also receive an additional set of mouse feet, a wireless extension adapter along with the dongle and the USB charge/data transfer cable:

The same perforated shell is noted as with with the DM6 Holey S, which is pleasant to the touch thanks to the rubberized finish (please keep in mind that this type of finish is also prone to collect lint and skin oils). It is a large, comfortable mouse and we found it best to be used with a palm or claw grip. Despite the inclusion of a battery, the mouse only weights 79 grams without the cable, only 9g more versus the DM6 Holey S!

In the frontal area of the scroll wheel we will note a tiny DM logo; the rubberized wheel is not RGB-enabled, the light coming from the internal PCB in the vicinity of the right button. The left/right button switches are manufactured by Huano, are of the Blue kind and come with a rating of 20 million actuations. In the upper area we will also note the DPI switch button:

On the left side of the mouse we will note two more large programmable buttons which are easily accessible; the honeycomb structure is not bothersome for the thumb, instead it helps with additional grip:

The back side also comes with holes of a hexagonal shape, through which we can take a glimpse inside:

The right side does not incorporate extra interfaces, but was mostly designed for resting our pinky finger:

A closer look in the front will reveal an USB Type-C port:

A Closer Look Contd.

The honeycomb structure is extended on the bottom as well, while in the corners we will note the preinstalled PTFE feet. The central sensor lens hides the PAW3335 sensor, which is similar in terms of behavior to the PMW3389, but with less power consumption and can deliver up to 16000 DPI, with a maximum tracking speed of 400 IPS:

A closer look does reveal a subtle On/Off button for the RGB LED:

The LED underside the right button is the only RGB element of the mouse and besides the programmable RGB color from the application, it also acts as a status LED for the battery:

The dongle adapter is very handy because it will permit us to use the adapter farther away from our system, which usually can add extra latencies due to electrical noise (especially when mounted directly in the back of a desktop computer):

The adapter has USB Type-C on one side for fitting the supplied mouse cable:

On the other end we have USB Type-A, for installing the wireless dongle:

The USB dongle does come with an OEM aspect and has no additional logos or LEDs:

The supplied mouse feet are handy for easy replacement, an accessory which is not often supplied for free inside the box:

The 2m braided cable is of shoelace kind, very flexible and makes you think that you would be using a wireless mouse even when charging via USB. This kind of cables eliminates the need of a mouse cable bungee:

The connectors are gold-plated and feature a custom design:

Let’s first charge the DM6 Holey Duo fully and then start testing!

The Software Interface

After installing the standalone software for the DM6 Holey Duo, we ran it to discover a simple GUI, with most settings being available right away! Right from the main screen, we have options to choose the current profile, set up different functions for the programmable buttons, take a look at the current battery charge level, adjust the number of DPI steps and their values but also choose a color for the RGB LED:

Here are the button functions we can assign:

Some functions come with sub-sections such as the following:

DPI

Multimedia

DPI Lock

After accessing the Parameter menu from the top, we can adjust the mouse Sensitivity, Double-click speed, the Scrolling speed but also the LOD:

The Macros have a dedicated area of their own:

Here we can not only enter the sequences but also insert delays if needed or specify the number of repeats, custom events:

When on wireless, the battery indicator in the application will display the exact percentage:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

After customizing the DM6 Holey Duo with our own DPI preferences, we went ahead and tried it in multiple game types such as Dark Alliance, The Evil Within, DOOM Eternal and Prodeus: the mouse felt responsive in both wired and wireless modes (used the wireless extender) and haven’t noted any erratic behavior from the sensor. At just 79 grams, the mouse feels very light and controllable during intense gaming sessions, while it’s shape and rubber coating retains a heightened level of comfort.

With the LED lighting turned off, the included 700mAh battery can provide around 70 hours of use and even after losing battery power we can plug in the mouse to its cable and continue gaming as usual.

In order to save battery live, when not in use the mouse sensor will enter in a suspend mode and we will be only able to wake it up after pressing one of the buttons; this is a good thing since this way it won’t wake up unnecessary from vibrations or other factors.

For just about 49.99 Euros, we are getting a respectable product with a mainstream to high-end sensor, mechanical left/right click buttons with 20 million clicks lifespan, wireless connectivity with a good battery life and more!
