SteelSeries Prime Wireless Lightweight Ultra-fast FPS Gaming Mouse Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2021-08-16

The Prime Wireless offers quite a bit of bleeding edge technology in a small package such as the Prestige Optical Magnetic Switches, the TrueMove Air high-end sensor but also impressive battery life when not using the RGB effects (up to 100 hours). The mouse does also come with fast charging capabilities, being able to provide up to 40 hours of use after only 15 minutes of charging, an operation which be done when you are taking a snack between gaming sessions.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank SteelSeries for offering the Prime Wireless Lightweight Ultra-fast FPS Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

About SteelSeries:

"From day one, SteelSeries has been focused on making high performance gaming gear used by the most demanding, top professional gamers worldwide and peripherals that provide superior quality and a competitive edge to gamers of all skill levels. We believe, as most gamers do, in winning, not trying!

What originally began with two people who recognized the need for superior, high-quality/performance gaming gear that would give gamers a competitive edge, has grown into a global leader in gaming and entertainment gear sought after for their high performance capabilities.

Fast-forward to today, and we’ve come a long way since our first glass mousepad. We have global offices in North America, Europe, and Asia, providing an integrated portfolio of products designed specifically for gaming. Fueling our growth is you, the gamer!

While we are proud of our technology and product innovation, we are even more excited about how these products are developed to meet the needs of gamers. Many companies may claim to develop superior gaming products but few actually do. Instead, they spend countless hours with lab engineers trying to force fit a new technology with bells and whistles and mediocre functionality for the end-user.

At SteelSeries, we develop our products with a small internal team and a vast network of technology partners, channel partners, game publishers, and gaming communities around the globe. We aren’t afraid of being challenged and implementing new ideas. Our main goal is to always to listen to the collective feedback of our professional gaming community.

We won’t bore you with cheeky slogans, trying to underline our authenticity as gamers. We fully acknowledge that the best professional gamers in the world know more about what they want and what will make them better, than we do. We are proud to be working with our partners, but we can’t take credit for their invaluable input and feedback. Instead we tell it like it is: they help us. We want to know what works and what doesn’t. For this reason, SteelSeries creates innovative solutions that provide a competitive advantage for all gamers.

Critical to our company’s success is also our reinvestment in the gaming communities and the individuals who support them. As a result, our corporate philosophy is to take a substantial portion of our revenue and put it back into the gaming community to help spur industry growth. We support our community in numerous ways, ranging from co-hosting tournaments like Iron Lady and King of the Hill, and supporting gaming competitions of all sizes, to promoting the top and up-and-coming gaming teams/organizations.

Put simply, SteelSeries does not claim to invent or reinvent the gaming industry. Nor do we focus on one specific product, copy other companies or follow the crowd.

Instead we leave it to you, the gamer, our customer/partner/inspiration, to decide if we are deserving of such declarations and accolades. What we do promise, however, is to remain committed to you. We will continue to work with you and the gaming community to make the best products possible and give you that competitive edge. We will continue to do our best to support the growth of the professional gaming industry and give back to the gaming communities. By doing so, we don’t just talk a good game, we win!"

Product Features

Winning Is Everything

Co-developed with the world’s leading competitive esports players, every aspect of the Prime wireless gaming mouse has been meticulously designed with a single goal in mind: victory.

Revolutionary Optical Magnetic Switch

The unique design of the Prestige OM™ switch are built for intense pro-level play. Leveraging neodymium magnets to deliver our most consistent mouse clicks ever, these switches are rated for 100 million clicks, best-in-class in the industry. The Prestige OM™ switch also utilizes an infrared light beam to deliver lightning-fast response times in game.

How It Works

The Prestige OM™ switch has a steel torsion spring held in place by a specially milled neodymium magnet. This magnetic force creates consistency and precision so that every click actuates with the same amount of release force. This switch, in conjunction with an input beam of infrared light, allows each click to register at quantum speeds, delivering unrivaled response times.

Consistent Crispy Clicks

Utilizing magnetic forces rather than mechanical parts for resistance produces clicks that are 4X more consistent than the competition for amazingly satisfying crispy clicks that ensure your 100 millionth mouse click feels just as crispy as the very first.

TrueMove Air Gaming Sensor

Designed in collaboration with PixArt, world-renowned pioneer in sensor innovation and technology, to outperform the competition with true 1-to-1 tracking, plus tilt tracking to eliminate unwanted tracking during angled drops, tilt slams, and quick flicks.

True 1-to-1 Tracking

Pros require pixel-perfect precision. Our premiere TrueMove Air sensor delivers 3X better accuracy than the competition so that every mouse mouse movement, from micro-adjustment to sweeping burst, translates precisely in-game as it was intended to.

On-Board Customization

On-the-fly adjustments are are essential for pros and always easy on our Prime line of mice. Choose between 4 polling rates and up to 5 pre-set or customized CPIs directly on the mouse to quickly adjust to the settings best suited to the game you're playing now.

Quantum 2.0 Wireless

Quantum 2.0 Wireless is our all-new cutting-edge wireless technology with advanced dual channel optimization to ensure performance that feels just like wired, with absolutely no packet loss.

Zero Packet Loss

With two wireless channels transmitting simultaneously across 40 possible frequencies, even when one channel gets interrupted, the mouse’s wireless signal doesn’t lag or drop a single packet.

High Performance Battery

Over 100 hours of uninterrupted 1000Hz gameplay on a single charge, 2x longer than the competition. Fast charge your mouse while you play with 15 minutes of charge time giving you 40 hours of gameplay.

Battle-Tested Form Factor

From precise micro adjustments to large sweeping movements, and everything in between, the world’s top esports pros helped us perfect a shape and lightweight 80g design that reduces hand fatigue when lifting and lowering the mouse without compromising durability.

Textured Matte Finish

A new, easy-to-clean textured top surface allows for a dependable non-slip grip for long, intense gaming sessions.

100% Virgin Grade PTFE

Pure PTFE glide skates provide enhanced control and smoothness for silky smooth super light mouse movements. Our glide skates are designed to cover key points of contact and pressure during intense gameplay for maximum performance.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

SteelSeries has launched just recently an interesting wireless mouse from their competitive gaming series named “Prime”. This series includes a headset, Arctis Prime but also a new set of mice: Prime, Prime+ and Prime Wireless. While the first two are wired, the last one, as the name says, is wireless but can be used in wired mode as well. These three mice come with the new Prestige OM switches with an incredible 100 million actuation rating, a low weight but also very capable sensor systems.

The Prime Wireless has arrived inside a compact cardboard enclosure, showing a photo of the mouse on the top cover:

On the side of the box we will note the product specifications in multiple languages, but also drawings of the included adapters:

On the opposite side, we will note a photo of the mouse left side panel, highlighting the scroll wheel with subtle RGB lighting:

The main product features can be seen better on the bottom, in multiple languages:

The product code name, serial number and power rating can be also spotted on the box:

By breaking the seals, we could lift the top cover to find the main product:

The lower layer includes the documentation, but also the hardware bundle:

To be more exact, we do have the supplied USB cable for charging and data transmission, the USB dongle, a dongle adapter but also the Product Information Guide:

The manual includes the necessary information on how to use the mouse,  but also describes the main product components:

The supplied cable is flexible (paracord-like) and ends up with customized USB connectors; the connector which goes to the PC is USB-A while the one connecting to the mouse or adapter is USB-C:

A Closer Look Part II

The cable comes with a total length of 2.1 meters:

The included adapter is useful when we would like to place the WiFi dongle as far away from the computer as possible, to avoid interruptions or increased latency:

Both adapter sides end up with an USB-C port:

On the bottom, it comes with a small rubber foot, in order for it to remain stable on the surface:

The dongle resembles the look of an USB Flash Drive, taking up space as it would have been in USB-A format, not USB-C. This is a small inconvenient if we do have a laptop with two USB-C ports close nearby, on the same side:

On its frontal, plastic chassis area we will find a subtle SteelSeries logo:

On its back we will note the internal code name, the power rating but also a serial number:

Here is how the assembly does look like when the adapter is used:

Even if it is a wireless mouse, it weights only 80 grams and comes with a medium-sized footprint: 125.3mm in length, a width of 59mm and a height of 23mm, being able to be used with all grip styles, depending on the size of the hand. The chassis is made from premium ABS polycarbonate, while the surface features a VDI30 tactile micro-texture, for a non-slip grip during intense and long gaming sessions:

The left/right click buttons do hide opto-magnetic switches, named by SteelSeries Prestige OM; the switches come with a steel torsion spring, held in place by a specially-milled neodymium magnet (found usually with headset drivers). The magnetic force is creating consistency and precision, so every click will actuate with the same amount of release force. The reaction speed is much increased thanks to an input beam of infrared light:

A Closer Look Part III

The left side comes with two, easy-accessible programmable buttons and is curved in order to provide an optimal resting position for the thumb:

In the back, we do have a dark grey SteelSeries logo:

The right side of the Prime Wireless does not house any additional buttons:

In the frontal area, we will note the USB-C port:

The bottom layer features 100% pure PTFE feet for smooth gliding, while the central area includes the TrueMove Air sensor lens:

In the vicinity of the sensor lens we do have the On/Off switch but also the CPI button:

We recommend charging the mouse fully before first use:

During the pairing mode with the USB dongle, the scroll wheel will light up white:

Thanks to the configuration software, we can work with the RGB lighting effects of the scroll wheel:

SteelSeries GG Part I

To be able to benefit from all configuration options, we will need to install SteelSeries GG and log in with an account:

The unified software comes with multiple tabs on the left side, one of which being the intro (Home):

The Moments area allows recordings of gameplay with different settings:

The Engine area is the section we know for quite some time now and is the primary area to navigate to when configuring devices:

A section dedicated to on-going giveaways is also available as a separate menu:

The Settings area allows modifying quite a few settings as well:

Before using the product, we were informed to perform a firmware update:

The GUI dedicated to Prime Wireless does offer quite a few configuration options from a single screen:

The dedicated configuration area for the programmable buttons is easy to use and has multiple categories:

Default

SteelSeries GG Part II

Keyboard Buttons

Macros

Media buttons

Mouse buttons

Deactivate button

Launch application

Launch configuration

Launch Engine Applications

OS Shortcuts

Record Macro

SteelSeries GG Part III

The Macro Editor opens in a separate window:

We can choose a different CPI value for each of the five levels, with increments of 100:

Battery optimization services can be configured as well:

Next, we do have the Angle Snapping area:

And the Acceleration / Deceleration settings:

The Polling rate is fully adjustable as well:

The Illumination settings can be accessed from the dedicated area, only with the Prime Wireless the scroll wheel is the single available RGB segment; in this screenshot you will note the preset Steady option:

We have more presets to choose from:

ColorShift

Multi Color Breathe

Disable Illumination

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

The Prime Wireless offers quite a bit of bleeding edge technology in a small package such as the Prestige Optical Magnetic Switches, the TrueMove Air high-end sensor but also impressive battery life when not using the RGB effects (up to 100 hours). The mouse does also come with fast charging capabilities, being able to provide up to 40 hours of use after only 15 minutes of charging, an operation which be done when you are taking a snack between gaming sessions.

We have tested the mouse in Doom Eternal, The Ascent, Battletech and Carrion; Prime Wireless has tracked flawlessly and thanks to the Quantum Wireless 2.0 technology, the response time was like we were using it in wired mode. We did really dig the subtle RGB lighting in the area of the scroll wheel, but also the power management features in order to conserve battery life as much as possible.

We have seen that some people noted in other reviews the CPI button placement as a negative; considering that this is a mouse for use in competitions, the player must avoid accidental CPI modifications and we think that is the main reason of this particular design.

The Prime Wireless mouse can be found online for about 129.9 Euros.
